Chisoxfn
Just did a real quick upgrade to version 2.1.7. It adds a virus checker on our back end and I am not sure of any significant changes that any of us will notice. Namely just security improvements. Its the most up to date version of the board there is.

Flash Tizzle
Automatically replacing "f.uck" and "s.hit" with "fish" and "spiff" is about the definition of a policy WSI would adopt. I'm not sure if it's a joke or not, but I'm surprised Soxtalk has ventured down this road. Reply with, "you can write a legitimate post without using a four letter word," or "it devalues your opinion in the mind of others," but honestly -- who cares? Are there certain people browsing this website which we have to appease? That, IMO, is the reason WSI began organizing an effort to structure a family-orientated website. And what has all that effort payed off with? Perhaps a few plugs here and there, and in the past, Dave Wills. That's it. For how their members fear posting negative comments -- not to mention their language filter replacing BMAC with "nails on a chalkboard -- I wouldn't say it is. On its own, restricting language isn't a problem. What I forsee is this branching off onto other divisions of the website which people deem inappropriate. Yes, certain members sporadically use foul language in their posts. But is is really such a concern that visitors will literally wet themselves from reading "f.uck" or "s.hit" in a post? I'd like to understand the rationale behind such a decision. Edited July 20, 2006 by Flash Tizzle
Chisoxfn
I'll make one response to this recent change. The change was made because "you can write a legitimate post without using a four letter word". I realize we've always been loose on languange and while we aren't about to get all strict there are places where the line has to be drawn. More and more we are getting younger and younger members and while I realize people will see and use these sort of words in there everyday life, it doesn't necessarily need to be an everyday reality on Soxtalk. I think we are all capable of getting our point across without using *f*ck*, *sh*t* or *b*tch*. However, in instances where it needs to be said, its still tolerated..sure it will be prettied up a bit with a fish, spiff or beach but the meaning will still be there. I've long said this site isn't about catering to the White Sox or the media. We have our own writers here, and our own media hookups (in terms of FutureSox) and the bottom line is that Sox fans and the membesr of this site come first. They always have and they always will. This site wouldn't be what it is today without posters like you, flash, and everyone else and I'll never forget that. But I truly believe this policy in addition to the removal of a few smilies (which were consistently used to degrade other members: roll eye smilies, puke smilie, etc) will help create a healthy and inciteful environment that encourages intelligent baseball discussion and debate. These rules don't bother me because I'm unable to type several explicit words over the internet. It's not as if now I'll be unable to express myself. I just believe this decision goes beyond "what's best for the site." Is their business aspects involved with this? Such as, if the site is cleaned its value increases. I could be way off -- I'm not exactly a business student -- but I know personally you couldn't care less. Just think about it for a second. A 12 year kid enters Soxtalk and notices the word "f.uck" or "s.hit," does he recoil in horror? Hell, he's probably browsing porn on the side as it is. How many people have honestly complained? 10, of the several hundred consistent posters? What about Nuke. You're killing him! "Eat Spiff" just doesn't sound the same. Or what about Spiff? How's he feel having him name used to substitute s.hit? Jason, I don't intend to fight hard about this issue. I love Soxtalk and hope it exists for a long time. However, I just wonder where this leads. Is the chatroom next? Will there be a roadhouse for attendance threads and "dark cloud" discussions? Exactly what will happen if people evade the language filters? Really, what speaks to this sites openess (in comparison to WSI) is you don't have to say spiff to me. You pay for the site. It's yours to run as you see fit. I appreciate the freedom to actually have a discussion about these rules in an open forum. Who knows if I'll have this freedom tomorrow, though. kapkomet
This site will NEVER ban people for "negative comments" about the team. PERIOD. We will ALWAYS promote expressions of your opinion, negative, or positive. If you are negative, have a thick skin, debate your point, and life is good. Didn't want to leave this out there un-answered and I can answer it really quickly, I have no intentions of selling Soxtalk. I've turned down numerous offers over the years. This place opened up as a way to discuss Sox stuff and in all reality its turned into so much more than just that. And Flash like I said I completely respect your opinion and realize these type of comments show that you guys care about this site and I think thats what makes Soxtalk so special.
