RAGING RODRIGUEZ: RHP Derek Rodriguez has emerged as one of the league's most consistent starting pitchers. The right-hander improved to 9-2 on the season after he allowed only five hits and one earned run in seven innings against Frederick on July 4. A master of changing speeds and mixing in a sidearm delivery, Rodriguez has pitched at least six innings in 10 straight starts and has won seven times in his last eight decisions. "He got off to a slow start this year, but he has worked hard, he keeps working and he has worked his way through it," pitching coach J.R. Perdew told the Winston-Salem Journal. "But we all know he is capable of that. Every time he takes the mound, everybody I think feels we have a chance to win the game."

Derek is now up to 10-2 with a 3.65 ERA. 20 games (all starts), 111 innings and 111 hits, only 4 HR, 42 BB, 76 K, .269 BAA, 2.01 GO/AO.

Carolina League Rankings:

10 wins (T-2nd)

20 starts (T-1st)

111 IP (3rd)

3.65 ERA (6th)

I wish we'd call him up to B-Ham.

Derek threw a gem last night for W-S, a 2 hit complete game shutout at Salem, with 2 walks and 7 k's. He's now 11-5 with a 4.00 ERA this year, and a solid 2.00 GO/AO. 141.2 IP, 146 hits, only 8 homers, 48 walks, 107 k's, .271 average against. Hopefully he starts out at Birmingham next year with Egbert and/or Gio in Charlotte.

For the most part he's had pretty good year, he just had three poor starts prior to his shutout and a tough april, but I think he's been good most of the season.

After a very solid year at W-S last year, Derek was promoted to Birmingham to begin this season but is coming out of the bullpen. He's been very good early on, with a 2-0 record and 1.50 ERA in his first 4 games. He's allowed only 1 hit and 1 run in 6 innings, with 5 walks, 11 k's, and an .056 average against.

Like David Cook, Rodriguez was promoted to Class AAA Charlotte earlier this year. First, his 2008 Birmingham #'s:

5-1, 3.38 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, in 29 relief outings covering 42.2 innings. 30 hits (2 homers) allowed, 18 walks, 44 k's, .203 average against, 0.91 GO/AO

At Charlotte though, he's been ever better so far:

0-1, 1.25 ERA, WHIP under 1, in 13 relief outings covering 21.2 innings. 11 hits (1 HR), 6 walks, 28 strikeouts, .145 average against, 1.47 GO/AO

Although he is 25 now, Rodriguez is a guy that you could see in our bullpen at the major league level, and be a help to it, very soon. I wouldn't be surprised if we see him this year in Chicago in fact with the injuries and Masset being traded.
