Chisoxfn
TCSN: Orioles Interested in Uribe; News on Danks By Jason Gage Chisport.com The first place White Sox have an interesting decision to make when Paul Konerko comes off the disabled list. Konerko is expected to begin a rehabilitation assignment in Charlotte shortly and will than rejoin the Sox by next week. When Konerko comes back one key question will pop up, who does he replace? The initial thought would be the seldom used Adam Russell. Russell has flashed the ability to be a solid major league reliever but is little used. This shouldn’t come as a shocker considering the Sox pen has thrown the second fewest innings (next to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim) and it makes you wonder why the Sox even carry 12 pitchers. However, Ozzie has continued to indicate that he’ll stick with 12 guys. While some question the logic, when you have a rotation with two young arms and Jose Contreras (who I still have a hard time counting on), the ability to turn a rough start over to Russell could turn into an asset that could actually save the club a couple games (by protecting the pen). This means the choice of who goes comes down to Ozuna and Uribe. One could make a case that Wise or Anderson could be better choices as well (as both could be sent down without any consequences). The decision will be much debated, does the club keep Juan and go with a defensive first approach off the bench (also a strength of the starting infield) or do they keep Ozuna whose strength (bat control, bunting, base-running) is an overall weakness on the roster (and thus an asset to the bench). If I were making the choice (Ozuna or Uribe), I’d argue the importance of Ozuna since he can come off the bench and provide the lineup with something it lacks (ie, small ball). However, that choice could end up being even easier as the Baltimore Orioles are in need of a shortstop and were scouting the Sox Juan Uribe on Monday. Moving Uribe for any sort of minor leaguer not only gives you some sort of value (albeit, we won’t be talking about anything but a A baller or fringe prospect) it also clears out some salary. You may ask, what does that little savings equate to? Well, for one, the Sox selected a few players (Upchurch, Danks, and Long) who were considered tough signs in the 08 Amateur Draft and the club could spin some of that money saved on Uribe into those contracts. Ironically, reports out of Chicago indicate that Jordan Danks (7th Rnd) has worked out for the White Sox and on Saturday his agent, Jeff Berry, had discussions with the Sox involving a contract which would almost surely be worth as much if not more than what the Sox 3rd round pick got. The deadline to sign Danks is August 15th and if the Sox come to terms, Danks will become the most “toolsy” outfielder in the Sox system as well as one of the most talented (along with John Shelby III and Jose Martinez). beautox
Would love to see the sox move Uribe and MacDougal to the O's just to free up some cash for Danks and hopefully Furcal in the offseason
BearSox
Good article! Man, it would be great if Danks signs. We need as much talent as possible in this system.
southsider2k5
If nothing else, I hope the article is right on the draft signings. The more guys we get into the system, the better. Personally I like sending Anderson down. I think Uribe needs to stick around just in case Crede's back relapses.

SoxFan562004
Like to see that the bullpen hasn't had innings dumped on them in the 1st half.
Baines3
I sure wouldn't let go of Uribe. He would be a good one to have around.
lostfan
The O's have zero talent at SS. I was at the Astros-O's game a couple weeks ago and they booed Tejada when he came to bat, I don't know why, it's not like he ever did anything to hurt Baltimore. lostfan
BTW I have no interest in Furcal, it would be great and all, but the last time we signed a guy with injury questions (Erstad) it didn't work out so well. I'd rather re-sign Cabrera if we were going to do something other than Ramirez-Richar in '09.

True enough but the Sox already have Orlando Cabrera, who is more or less just as good although isn't as good of a leadoff hitter. The Dye signing was different. The net gain of speed in the lineup wouldn't really be worth it (considering OC would be gone) and the injury baggage would come with. Kyyle23
Would Melvin Mora be someone the Sox might be interested in? IIRC he can play multiple infield positions, has much more pop in his bat than Ozuna, can handle 3rd base better than Ozuna.

IIRC he can play multiple infield positions, has much more pop in his bat than Ozuna, can handle 3rd base better than Ozuna. Unless i'm sure i want the "play now" guy actually playing, lets just move Uribe to get some kind of reupping of the crappy farm system. But it needs to be a meaningful prospect, or else just keep him. After all, Uribe has been our best pinch hitter, and of course the defense. This isnt the time to be worried about restocking the farm system, this is the time to be stocking depth at the major league level for the stretch run. bmags
I'd want an IF back that can play 3b well. I wish we had robbie mack back.
earthshiner
I'd just as soon trade Paulie or leave him on the DL. Not like his numbers are much better than Uribe this year.
EvilJester99
I'd be more inclined to try and unload Thome. Move Kong to DH and leave Swish at 1B. Edited July 1, 2008 by EvilJester99
DBAHO
If you could bring in an IF at the deadline to replace Uribe, then yeah I'd get rid of him. But if he goes, we'll need someone to play backup SS. Do you want to give that role to Ozuna, or even Ramirez? There lies the problem.

Uribe has been brutal for years now.
lostfan
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 12:16 PM) I don't think the whole B-12 shot thing and the Mitchell report did anything to help him there. How would you feel if you paid about $12 million a year to a guy who turned up in the Mitchell report? I'm pretty apathetic about the whole thing anymore. The fact that the Mitchell report was the tip of the iceberg we'll never see, did it have any impact on anything? Not really, Tejada never got suspended or anything, and he's still pretty productive. Plus they still love Roberts here who was also in the Mitchell report and admitted steroid use, albeit once. Regardless Tejada brought them Luke Scott, who they're in love with, and a handful of other players, so they should be thanking him.
Kyyle23
Konerko and Thome arent going anywhere unless they say so, so it isnt even worth putting out there IMO
