Cuban Politics and Government Thread

I thought that I'd start this thread so that Cubano, BearSox - or anyone else who wants - can discuss the Cuban government and their treatment of the Cuban people. Especially since Cuban players are more and more part of the White Sox.

Personally, I can't wait until there's a true regime change. Then, Cuba has a better chance of becoming a 21st century society.

It'll probably just continue being another 3rd world Caribbean state.

Disagree.

Early in the 20th century Cuba was a blossoming hot spot for US tourists. Also, I wouldnt call many Caribbean nations 3rd world countries. Haiti and Dominican Republic yes (I was in DR this summer and it was so weird to see) but many smaller islands are doing well for themselves

The ones that are doing well are territories of larger states for the most part. Cuba would probably do as well as The Bahamas, maybe a little better due to their healthy medical industry.

Did you sign the filibuster agreement Richard?

Cuba has no natural resources though some thick oil was found in the Gulf of Mexico. This oil will be ours until the USA claims it as its own and go after it. Other than that we have nickel, rum and tabacco. Tabacco is a dying industry with all new laws against smoking. We have good baseball and Volleyball players that can bring money from USA, Japan and Europe. We have good boxers. We have plenty doctors, nurses, etc and may come to the USA due to USA needs on those fields. We have good musicians. We have good beaches and a great history to go along with tourism.

I think we can become a second world country. Many USA companies will move to Cuba due to cheap labor. I know many of you has issues with this. Talk to Obama or whoever is in the White House at the time.

We have to control the dictators though. We have had 4 already. Two from the rights and two from the left.

I believe Cuba is technically one of the few "Second World" countries that actually remain.

Yah, that's interesting, and what I thought of when I saw what cubano wrote... Developing country would probably be the proper term.

Using the term "third world" to describe lesser developed countries is also erroneous. The term was initally coined to describe the non-aligned countries of the world who didn't necessarily align with American or Soviet interests. The Third World terminology was meant to empower these countries to find their "third way." Or something between the capitalism the US encouraged and the strict planned economy that the Soviets wanted. In many respects, China does represent the third world ideal, at least in terms of economy.

Both China and India fit that bill, but are also economically western-aligned to a certain extent. Its also a development connotation. Either way, not sure those countries fit well into any of the categories.

It's actually a moot point anyway. Russia isn't a superpower, it's highly advanced obviously, but it's still stumbling along. So there is the United States/Canada, Western Europe, Russia, and a bunch of other emerging economies (probably the top 3 are China, India, and Brazil).
