2001

6-9=6 GB

14-29-15.5 GB (low water mark)

82-74=7.5 GB (high water mark)

this year will be cited a lot, that we can comeback and get into the division race, although the Indians/Twins were just too far ahead by that point

1997 (AKA WHITE FLAG SEASON)

4-11=5.5 GB

47-42=2.5 GB (high water mark) another bad start that got them back above .500 and within striking distance

69-74=9 GB (low water mark)

1984

6-9=3 GB

67-81/70-84=9/10 GB (low water marks)

44-40=1 GAME UP (high water mark)

1983

7-8=2.5 GB

16-24=7 GB (low water mark...this is the year that will be quoted by comeback believers)

99-63=UP 20 games (high water mark...one of few Sox teams that peaked at end of the season)

1968

3-12=8.5 GB

62-88=33.5 GB (low water mark)

15-17=6 GB (high water mark)

1967

8-7=1 GB

89-68=1 GB (high water mark)

1960

9-6=tied for first

30-29=5.5 GB (low water mark)

85-62=4.5 GB (high water mark)

1959

9-6=1.5 GB

11-11=4.5 GB (low water mark)

87-52=4.5 GAMES UP (high water mark)

1993 8-7 start

1994 9-6 start

2000 9-6 start/37-23

2005 11-4 start/41-19

2006 10-5 start/37-23

2007 8-7 start/27-33 (9 GB)

2008 9-6 start/33-27

Seems pretty obvious we have to stay no more than 7-9 games back or it really is close to being over before it started.
