Your Realistic 2014 Lineup

Dunt

Recommended Posts

With the looming trade deadline and Hahn's recent declaration that everyone is available outside Sale and Konerko, what do you think this club is going to look like a year from now? I'm thinking it'll be something like:

C Flowers/Phegley

1B Dunn

2B Beckham

SS Call-up/free agent

3B Gillespie/Morel

LF De Aza

CF Call-up/free agent

RF Danks

DH Viciedo

SP Chris Sale

SP Erik Johnson

SP John Danks

SP Jose Quintana

SP Hector Santiago

CL Addison Reed

RP Nate Jones

RP Free agent

RP Free agent

RP Free agent

RP Call-up

Just staring at that potential lineup makes me incredibly sad, but that is the reality of the situation the Sox are in. Looking at the 2014 free agent class, there isn't much there that excites me. I would love a "younger" impact bat along the lines of Brian McCann or Shin Shoo Choo, but I dont think either of those guys are coming here. Might need to focus on good defensive guys and retooling the bullpen to even remotely have a chance at competing.

Trade Santiago, Crain, and Flowers to the Padres for Blanks, Amarista, Ross, Adys Portillo and Cory Spangenberg. Bullpen is basically a revolving door while the Sox evaulate guys from the system that can be long term contributors. Of course other deals will bring back players as well, but I they will probably not all be ready to contribute on opening day.

I understand the whole "rebuilding, who cares what side" argument regarding the lineup, but this division is far too right handed to be using a lineup that right handed. Also, if they signed Corey Hart and added 0 other hitters, it would be the most pointless exercise in exercising exercises that I'd exercise my right to pound my exercised head against a brick wall, which will also be exercised.

This is the most realistic if that's what you want. We don't know what the lineup will look like in August much less 2014.

Because why not. Won't bid high for the best outfielders, but Pence will be a nice player that may not be overpaid and should be able to be a piece for a winning version of our team and/or a nice stop-gap player if things don't work out. A player that could potentially have value near that of Rios with lower salary. With departures of Rios, Peavy, PK, Floyd, Crain, Thornton, we'll still be saving money even if we pay market value for Morales and Pence. Won't need to add FAs for rotation. Might look at a vet or two for the 'pen and Lindstrom may be brought back via team option if he is not traded.

The second Granderson set-back of the season is making his affordability more and more likely.

Personally I hope that after these moves we will make at the deadline & during the offseason we end up with a better CF option than Curtis. Nothing against Curtis, and again I have no problem signing vets to fill the spaces that the young guys aren't ready to take, but really CF & SS is of major concern. You just can't count on Trayce. If by some magical turn of events he becomes an MLB starter then you thank your lucky stars & consider it a potentially excellent player falling into your lap.

I keep mentioning Martin because he might be out there, and he's MLB ready with a nice floor. We should try to get players like that, real CFers who aren't going to K 4 billion times and can play now.

Did only the position players just for fun since I really don't think anyone can accurately predict who will be on the Sox in 2014.

Part ideal, part realistic:

C- AJ

1b- Napoli...or Morales

2B- Gordon

SS- Alexei

3B- Gillaspie/Keppinger platoon

RF- Rios

CF- De Aza

RF- Viciedo

DH- Dunn

1. Sale

2. Peavy

3. Santiago

4. Q

5. Danks/Johnson/Axe

Jones and Reed out of the pen.

Fire Robin. Hire an actual candidate. In the least abuse MLBs new second hitting coach rule and bring in Omar Vizquel. He wont help with the hitting but Alexei should be a million times better defensively. Hopefully.

Why would anybody want Flowers? Santiago is a decent prospect, nothing special. Crain is good, but old. Why would the Padres ship us all those guys for one stiff, one decent lefty and a good but aging setup man?

Santiago is a heckuva lot better than a "decent, non-special prospect".

Flowers would be a decent backup C and actually would be a decent fit for Petco since when he does get ahold of a ball he hits it a long way. He also still has some promise to improve with time. Not a lot of value, but teams do need cheap backup catchers.
