Longtime lurker to this board,first post. Tim’s an entertaining player who makes mistakes, to be sure. But as other posters have noted, he is young. He’s also playing the most difficult position in baseball (along with catcher), so the learning curve is greater in that regard. Luis Aparicio had 35 errors in his first year -- he recorded 30 errors as late as 1960. So this happens with shortstops This thread is primarily interesting because of its casual racism, though. Lillian’s comment about basketball players, baseball IQ’s and genetic was especially troubling in its casual racism. And troubling because no one called this out. It’s not altogether surprising, though. I’ve been a Sox fan for more than 40 years and went to school near Sox Park (proud DeLaSalle alumnus). And the one thing that many Sox fans don’t want to admit is that there’s a core group of Sox fans that has always had a double-standard for black and Latin players, including the best player in franchise history, Frank Thomas. I think this is partly because the core Sox fans have historically come from nearby neighborhoods like Bridgeport, Canaryville, Mount Greenwood, Morgan Park and other Southwest Side neighborhoods which have had a history of racial tension and animosity towards blacks and Latins. The veteran catchers that get a reputation like perez and molina have become insufferable. Basically are the hallway monitors of the league. They can cause fights and shove umpires without punishment, and yet get to act like they are the epitome of baseball.

Guys you know the answer to this. It was 2016 in May, Jimmy Rollins was the starting SS, the Team that Rick Hahn had convinced himself was a competitive roster got out to a 10 games over .500 record then realized that Rollins was a terrible starting SS and, as their record was collapsing, they made desperation moves. The 3 desperation moves made that May/June were: 1. Calling up Anderson to take over SS after 2 months in AAA 2. Calling up Carson Fulmer to save the bullpen when he had an ERA of 5 in AA 3. Trading some no-name minor leaguer and Erik Johnson for James Shields. Same pulse of events involved them acquiring Miguel Gonzalez and waiving Danks and Latos. Those weren't as bad of moves, but still same basic concept. They turned over 20% of the big league roster in a month to try to stop that collapse. All 3 of those were terrible moves, in all honesty Anderson probably was the least bad of them as he had a decent start to his career, but he still has had some struggles since. All of them did long term damage to the franchise in order to save Ricky's 2016 juggernaut. These are the kinds of mistakes a GM makes when he convinces himself he has a competitive team and he does not.

No need to defend your comments unless you see yourself in the mirror. It was claimed people criticized Alexei for the same reason. Alexei did make a lot of mental mistakes. Tim might have an issue still with being young and unproven. Fans always get impatient with mental mistakes. We like to see improvement. I don't see an impact player after the Sox brought him up young and tried to oversell his potential. Maybe it's not his fault.

Welcome. While I understand/respect your point, Anderson was literally a basketball player his whole life until late in high school. So when Lillian wrote, "that's what happens when you sign a basketball player", it applies literally, in this context, as he has spent more years as a basketball player in his life than he has as a baseball player.

Moncada, Davidson, TA are all looking very solid lately. 3rd highest barrel rate % of any team so far. Needless to say, I'm impressed with the work Steverson has done with the young hitters. I stand by my initial post.

It's currently 2.2:1. If he's going to be an above average, most of the time DH who backs up 3b or 1b occasionally, my goal out of that position is something like an .850 OPS as that would be above AL average production out of that position. Since he strikes out a lot that would bounce up and down every year, some years he might be .825 some years he might be at .900, but I think that's a reasonable goal. Give me that and I'm happy with him as a DH for the next several years.

Except we have seen exactly this kind of play all over baseball. As to Anderson specifically, he is really raw in terms of repetitions. He had less ABs in his entire college experience than Gordon Beckham had in his final year of college. He had 332 ABs total in all of college. He didn't play baseball at all until his junior year of high school. That is years of playing that Anderson didn't have to get those repetitions that lots of others player got. While you can say he is 25 years old, and almost through his second full year of MLB service time, he is YEARS younger in terms of actual playing experience, especially that of a high level competition. Tim Anderson is quite literally learning on the job.

I always laughed at the contrast in how Ramirez and Beckham were treated. Not only was Ramirez a much better player, he was also a smarter player, though you would never know it by listening to fans. I don't even think it's intentional, it's just inherent in our culture, or rather the culture of sports.

Yeah I wouldn't describe Timmy as having a low baseball IQ. He does look to be lackadaisical at times. Timmy is still young and adjusting to the speed of the game. He has improved tremendously at SS since being drafted and had a setback last year after losing a loved one. Give the kid a break. This is a development year for all the players and they are going to make mistakes and even get lackadaisical from time to time.

Watching the Sox offense lately, if he is to blame, there is no question Todd Steverson should be locked up.
