  3. I’m against wasting our financial resources on moderate upgrades when we’re not ready to win. I fully supported the Castillo signing because we had a massive gap at catcher in our organization. Signing Moustakas to block Yolmer or picking Shields’ option to block Jordan Stephens would be very stupid at this stage of the rebuild IMO. When the time is right, hopefully by 2020, I fully expect $120M+ payrolls. And yes, I’d rather spend my money on young, impact free agents rather than the next Melky Cabrera & Adam LaRoche. But I’m not against rolling the dice on certain 30+ year old free agents and have been one of the loudest advocates for extending Abreu despite his age.

  4. I know he makes some routine errors but seems kind of harsh on Anderson

  5. Engel has busted his behind to Improve at the plate. Regardless of what someone might think about him on the big league roster you have to admire his effort

  7. Yeh, he should probably give up hitting left handed.

  8. "Frankly I don't really care about the rebuild right now. I care about winning. They keep talking about rebuild and I'm trying to win ballgames right now, period. I don't like losing. We are losing ballgames right now." - James Shields. I didn't see this posted but it brings up one of the main questions moving forward into the immediate future ,starting this off season for the organization / front office. Can they convince free agents, especially the good ones, to come to the Sox assuming the money offer is about the same among teams vying for their services? We'll find out soon enough since not all of the prospects are going to make it. The law of averages just about guarantees that and there will be holes the Sox are going to have to fill from the outside. It will be a test of the front office's ability to sell the rebuild and that progress will be coming soon.

  9. It's different game today. Fans accept losing and strikeouts and pitchers to throw as hard so they leave earlier in games. Fans used to expect the FO to draft well so they don't have to go through a rebuild and losing. Now they lose on purpose to make their job easier.

  10. Yeah, maybe they get some people just surprised by the price when they reach the counter or hear it from the aisle vendor. No sense in complaining to them, though. They just pour the beer.

  11. Holy hyperbole... No one is saying it's a crime. No one is saying you have to buy it. In fact, multiple posters (myself included) have said they reason they keep pushing - is because the fans keep buying. We're simply guys who enjoy drinking a beer at a ball game, having a conversation... but thanks for your nuggets of wisdom "dad".

  12. Ha... I mean, I'm sure there's a line. 20 is probably over it. Looks like sports team owners are determined to find out exactly where that line is, though. Maybe we're there now? If it hit 15... I'd probably have to turn it away. Just on account of having a little dignity. 45 bucks for 3 beers at a ball game. lol Arthur Blank is making his new arenas sell concessions at reasonable prices. Maybe they do really well and it cues the rest of em.

  13. Well hopefully Ricky Renteria has some say on the first pick, because he’ll be all-in on Madrigal after that beautiful bunt he just laid down.

  14. The Athletic had an article on this recently and the minor league catching coordinator didn’t give exactly the most glowing review. Said he was still a work in process but had made some strides as of late. Specifically mentioned game calling and receiving balls low in the zone as areas of opportunity. He did say Zavala’s defensive game had progressed nicely. I think post draft they’ll bump up Zavala to AAA so each kid can get more work behind the plate.

  15. BA and pipeline consistently rate high performing college pitchers higher and it’s a reason I think they are worse. Fangraphs at an overall level devalued pitching prospects and I think that’s correct.

  16. Where was this James Shields when he was getting clobbered the previous seasons.

  19. Right?!?! Dude is a friggin tank. He's a circus in the outfield...but love to watch that guy connect with a ball. He usually hurts it...

  20. geezus. It's more about Shields has toed the company line as best as he can the past few years...especially this year with mentoring a lot of the younger guys. Granted he hasn't really earned his pay check...but the Sox weren't the ones that gave it to him...they merely traded for it. I think his point is...I've done all I can here...I really serve no purpose here anymore and tired of being a baby sitter. Him saying "right now" is his point....it's his push to get the eff outta Chicago. Can't blame him. He's thrown very well this year. I hope the Sox can accomodate his wishes and get a little something in return.

  21. The Yanks, BoSox, Cubs, Dodgers, and Angels will have a ton of money spend and much better situations than us. We are not winning any battles against these teams for the quality free agents. We will not outbid any of them because at least one team will overpay for each quality free agent. We may be able to get the sloppy thirds at this moment. Next year will be more reasonable for us.

  26. The problem is... They know people are going to want beer at a ball game (pretty much) no matter what. People pay it.

  27. $5-7 for draft in the neighborhood bars. Cans & bottles typically less.
    1 point
  28. You mean just at bars? 3-3.50 for a domestic bottle typically. Little more at a high-end spot, obviously. If you're talking about the Bacardi Lounge connecting to the stadium or stuff like that... It's not much different from the inside. I forget the name of the spot walking distance from the Stadium in Bridgeport. Was only there once. Had PBR cans for 2 bucks a pop. lol

  39. Under no circumstance should we pick up a $16M option for Shields. That would be absolute insanity. While he hasn’t been terrible this year, he’s still not good and could easily be replaced with a less costly and/or better option.

  44. Rabbit - here's where I stand on this. I think that religion and faith are deeply personal (raised Catholic, currently agnostic). While I don't hold to an organized religion, I don't begrudge people their personal faith... so long as that personal faith does not intrude upon the public sphere. Conservatives in statehouses across the country (and in Congress) are attempting to legislate via faith. Simply put, there is no religious lobby or atheistic lobby that has nearly the same level of impact on legislation in this country as Evangelical Christians have. I also believe that diversity is important! Cultural and racial diversity is important - my experiences with law enforcement, obtaining housing, attending school - are very different than an African-American woman (for example). People govern from their own experience. When overwhelming majorities of the government are white and male, there is an important perspective that is missing. I'll also argue that socioeconomic diversity is also important. It wasn't until I was out of high school, and exposed to people from different socioeconomic backgrounds than my own that I started to even scratch the surface of some of the things I took for granted that keep people in poverty. To get to equality, the people that pull the levers in society need to be able to understand the different experiences and problems of people across cultural, racial, and economic divides. We aren't even close to there yet...

  45. I always get a kick out of whenever you write this BS. You endlessly defend him, and rarely, if ever, find anything wrong with what he does, at least to the point if a person with a D after their name did the exact same thing.

  47. Yes. Somehow being an MJ fan precludes us from admitting he's at least been equaled. I've come to terms with it. Lebron is fucking unreal.
