They aren't "tanking" persay, but they aren't going to be that good. And lottery odds are much different anyway. Decent size shift (downward) related to the odds of the worst 5 or 6 teams. I think the price Dallas paid was steep. Obviously they got there guy and are happy but I still think we are in that asset accumulation phase. I also just need to make my point...welp back to NBA hell. Stupidest phrase on the planet. So sick of that crap. I will never endorse a franchise that wants to run a model like the Sixers (suck forever and forever until maybe you get lucky and have a few year run, no thanks). I'd rather employ a Rockets like strategy of be as damn good as you can each and every year and be creative in how you take big swings and retool over time. The reality is, unless you are lucky enough to have one of the top player in the world, you are probably not regularly playing and/or winning championships. Just look back over history. Either we get ridiculously lucky and get the next #1 player via the draft or we draft just really well and have a quality team and hope you can lure major free agents to push you over the topic. All strategies are unlikely but you try to be as good as you can be to enable the best free agent push possible. The reality is there is usually just one team in the league that truly "wins" the big FA signing/crop so everyone else loses.2 points

He and Shields have both been playing around with different arm angles to give the hitters different looks and perhaps more movement, especially to LH batters.1 point

There's a difference between tanking and trying to lose. The entire purpose of this year is not to lose games, it's to figure out how many people we have that are worth a shit (not a lot). But it's also to give guys like Lucas, Reynaldo, Covey, Yoan, etc. a chance to work on and refine things and grow. Each one of those guys figuring something out is one less issue moving forward.1 point

I think it is baseless speculation to assume the strikeouts have some major negative effect. At any rate, there's growing evidence that the growth in Ks league-wide has much more to do with the strike zone expanding (because it is now being called by the rulebook) and pitchers getting really, really good. I do think the tanking issue is much more likely the explanation for the attendance drop. It's a tricky issue, but I suspect the best way to deter tanking is to reduce the value of young talent by doing something like reducing the service time required to reach free agency.1 point

With someone so "analytical" like him, he probably beats himself up about the 8th instead of focusing on how well the first 7 innings were. There was absolutely no reason for him to start the 8th.1 point

Renteria is just the worst. Had a chance to get Giolito out of game on a positive note. He did the same earlier in the year and it backfired.1 point

Interesting. The A's broadcast crew noting that Dustin Fowler was initially going to be in the Yankees/White Sox trade last year until the injury happened.1 point

I remain skeptical that the Sox can develop young players of any kind. Sale was MLB ready so he doesn't count. Name a player who has spent 2-3 seasons in the Sox minors and had a long career. The last one was McCarthy. Yes, it has been that long. It would be nice if one of the Sox minor leaguers came up and set the world on fire rather than struggle for a season plus worth of PA/Innings. It doesn't seem that hard to do because other teams are doing it regularly. Sox are a joke.1 point

So happy to see Hansen make it back and getting his second start tonight. Still my favorite pitching prospect.1 point

My point is that win-now moves like that are dumb and detrimental to his development. How will he improve as a RHH if we don't give him ample opportunity to?1 point

If you click on their name you get a scouting report with tools and it lists their pre-season rank as well.1 point

You guys don't know how to enjoy a good thing. Leury is maybe the best example sox have had in developing a position player recently. Leuryforever.1 point

I wonder how much better we can expect to be. We won't have Niko playing like prime Dirk for a two month stretch, so hopefully the Bulls can be top 5 next year and land a superstar. Insert Superstar + WC + Lauri might get us to the second round of the playoffs someday. Fuck the Bulls.1 point

What more do you think will develop? Which conflicting statement are we supposed to believe? The First Lady's spokesman said it was not directed at anyone in particular and was "just a jacket", but the President said it was directed at the media. Both can not be true. As you said, it's hard to believe that a fashion model picked that jacket out of the blue and didn't mean anything by it. But it's also hard to believe that if it was directed at the media, the White House and the First Lady wouldn't have their story straight. When it's proven that one or both lie constantly, and getting a straight answer is near impossible, people are going to wonder why and make assumptions that are not going to be flattering to liars.1 point

LOL. You'd be a good fill-in for Tucker Carlson when he needs a day off. Not controversial? Then why all the controversy all over the news about her jacket decision? This is a woman who wears only top of the line, expensive designer clothing every other day but decides to wear a cheap Zara jacket with those words on a very hot day. And those words...given the place she's visiting and the increased hysteria over the family separations? GMAFB. Stop being so obtuse.1 point

The problem with staying where they are and taking the "safe" pick, is it makes them a better team, but it doesn't, in reality, increase their chances at legitimate title contention. That's why they have to roll the dice. If it doesn't work, they are terrible, which in the NBA, makes you closer to a title than average, unless you are a team that can attract the elite free agents, something the Bulls haven't been able to do. They get used by the elites.1 point

You're the worst. Herrera is a free agent after this year and Royals are currently 22-52 and worse than the Sox. Of course you trade him.1 point

Imagine Michelle Obama had visited poor white Appalachian kids (hooked on opioids) in that same outfit. She would be hung in effigy throughout the former states of the Confederacy. Outraged 24 hour coverage, guaranteed. You would still be hearing about it on Fox decades from now....whereas all this Melania stuff will simply blow over in one or two news cycles.1 point

I would estimate Abreu's value to be close to what the Pirates got for Cole. There were no sexy names but the Pirates did well. Say Abreu and Cedeno for Martes, Davis and Stubbs.1 point

I'm sorry but this is a fundamental misunderstanding of how WAR is generated from linear weights. It was a shock to my system reading Tango's original public work, but his insight is as true now as it was then -- scoring and preventing runs in baseball is a math problem. You've got discrete events that occur in a non infinite set. You can assign values to events with amazing precision given the inherent setup of the game. Dividing by outs makes it all possible. No clock.1 point

Royals fans are in nirvana today, lol. They acquired three guys nobody's ever heard of (the future unknowns) for their closer. They now are embracing the suck as Sox fans have done. They are comparing it to when they got Cain and Escobar. Ah, how great a job it is to be a GM nowadays. Losing is beloved!1 point

Yeah you're right. They should have just turned it into an unofficial sequel to that franchise with completely different characters and backstory.1 point

So that's 8 errors in the last 24 games or 6 in the last 13 for Yoan. I am on record saying I don't think Tim has ever been a good defensive shortstop. Most of Yoan's errors have been recent and I haven't been watching lately, but if this is the middle infield of the future the Sox are in trouble. All things equal Anderson deserves a shorter leash as he's had 2730 innings at the position in the MLB while Yoan has had 1017 at 2b. I've always thought Tim would be better in CF, but if Yoan can't handle 2b the Sox are in trouble. Can anyone tell me how Jose Rondon's defense has looked at the MLB level?0 points

I wonder if this keeps up if they send him down as punishment for lack of focus. He is so damn lazy defensively. Looks more like Daniel Murphy defensively, not Cano.0 points
