Jesus fucking Christ Kopech has over 140 innings of experience in Triple A and was the hottest pitcher in MILB over the past 2 months and people still want to keep him down.. SMDH... There is a lot that goes into play about these decisions than just that extra year of control, which may not matter as much at the end as the people here are fussing about. If you look at Kopech's overall body of work, he's proven he's ready the past month or so, and he most likely have "checked the checkboxes" with the organization. How do you tell the kid at the point that he's still not getting the call if he has done what the org has asked him to? On the flip side if you want to build some good will with Kopech (and Eloy) to leverage during contract extension discussion, these are the moves you make. If you handle their development solely based on financial reasons, that makes it much, much harder for the Sox as the negotiation table. Also, remember the backlash Cubs have gotten from the MLBPA after keeping Bryant down in 2015? More importantly, if we want to help Kopech become better as quickly as possible, this is the move you got to make. He will learn from this next month and a half and hopefully makes adjustments in the off season and be more ready next year. The quicker Kopech becomes good, the less time we waste on Rodon, Moncada, Lopez, Gio, and TA's contract. I also think an important point being ignored here is if Kopech and Eloy come up and show they're the real deal, it will be a lot easier to sell to the upcoming FA class that we could be a winning team in 2019 or 2020.7 points

Uh, nobody said to "hide him in the minors forever." That's what we call a strawman. I care, man. I care because there's value in an extra year. I care because it looks like a waste of value for no reason other than placate the annoyingly vocal shortsighted side of the fanbase. There's no logical reason to waste a year of service time for a team 32 games under .500.7 points

Rebuilding or not, this guy is a garbage ass coach. He constantly makes questionable decisions. He makes himself look like an ass regularly with his hustle rules. They can't keep this dude as manager. It's time.4 points

Well you can sit on your couch all depressed that Kopech is making his debut while the rest of us are on the edge of our seats watching our young phenom make his dreams come true.4 points

There is absolutely zero reason for Hahn to publically announce a timeline other than to appease bitter fans who want to hold him accountable. The reality is the timeline is fluid and will change as guys develop and/or bust. We’re still way too early into the process to know with any level of certainty when the window will officially open. I’m sure they’re hoping internally for 2020 to be the first year of serious contention, but as has been mentioned in this thread multiple times, the first wave has developed slower than expected and that creates more uncertainty. And that uncertain is a big reason why it appears they won’t be calling up Jiménez & Kopech this year, which I applaud Rick for. No need to rush this rebuild in a half-ass attempt to hit some imaginary deadline.4 points

Good god man. Go back and look at the articles around the time of the Sale and Eaton trade. The Sox front office was talking about this organization being a team to reckon with in 2019/2020. Now the window is supposed to start in 2022? If that is the case, then just avoid the inevitable and fire Hahn and company now.4 points

He was absolutely not pitching well enough to deserve a callup at the trade deadline. He is now.3 points

It's the way you phrased it man. It sounds like you are concerned that the Sox are gonna lose a top 50 prospect 5 years down the line when the Sox are trying to trade Kopech ala the Sale deal. The prospect hoarding and teardown part of the rebuild are ovah! Some of us would like to see a competitve Sox team within the next few years. Bringing Kopech up now and getting him some mlb experience moves the needle towards that.3 points

Disagree. His OBP is low, probably will always be like that, but you don't give up 20+ HR 60 RBI+ and average to above average defense at SS. On a good team, Anderson would be the perfect 9 hitter.3 points

1. I'd look outside of the organization for a better replacement. Can't be too hard to beat a sub .300 OBP player. 2. Timmy's OBP isn't league average its well below. This guy makes so many damn outs! 3. I don't feel Timmy can improve his OBP numbers by any great strides. He is what he is at this point. As stated earlier -- I think it wouldn't be too hard to replace him. We love the HR/SB numbers, but how many outs below average has resulted in negative runs? I will go more into this in the offseason and look deeper into the statistics and replacement level statistics. So i'll end that side of the rant there (i'll note that I'm only beginning to look deep into stats).2 points

Konerko on Moncada: "Kind of tough to try to walk your way through the season. You have to show them you can swing the bat." Says young hitters have to swing bat first, walks come later.”2 points

This. bringing kopech up makes sense because of his development. We want this kid to become a 200ip pitcher2 points

This is awesome. I love the people mad about this. The argument is that service time is quantifiable but pissing off players & agents isn’t so it doesn’t exist. Not my money so I can’t pretend to be mad or upset.2 points

These guys need to come up when they ready. If they reach their potential they’ll either be resigned or traded for a haul. There is no loss here.2 points

Worth noting that the CBA will be renegotiated before these guys potentially reach free agency and all the monkeying around with service time happening now may not even matter.2 points

It seems a little unfair to criticize Benetti, in this context. He is not an ex player. He has has his own strengths, as well. He has a good voice, is a pretty well rounded and intelligent young man. It's the difference between being a "play by play" announcer, versus a "color" broadcaster.2 points

If Shields being dealt was a must before Kopech was called up then Hahn is an idiot. You bullpen or DFA shields and give Kopech starts right after the trade deadline.2 points

I feel like he is the type of guy that wouldn't respond well to being kept down just for another year of control. It would probably hurt any chance we had of keeping him after the control as well as his mentality towards the team overall. I think Eloy might be different where he understands it more and would be more likely to agree to an early extension anyway, so I want to keep him down for the extra year.2 points

Huh? He’ll be 22 going on 23 when he’s promoted in mid-April. Not absurd at all. In fact, it’s nearly the same exact age in which Carlos Rodon made his debut.2 points

When Hansen played at 23 ( Moncada's current age) he had a wRC+ of 35. At 24 last season between the Pirates and Sox Hansen's wRC+ was 59. Thank you for pointing out that despite his struggles, Moncada is better than Hansen was at 23. And Moncada has much more talent.2 points

I can’t remember a poster in all my years here who brought less to the table than Tommy Longo. Like we have to go back to Marty34 to find someone who combined a negative outlook with illogical reasoning for everything they argued. This Gorman/Madrigal bet has got to be one of the single dumbest attempts to rip a player I have ever seen. But this is the internet and people love being dumb, loud, & proud.2 points

Like when the team wants you to wear uniforms that prevent you from doing your job well? I think I will gladly take the elite talent every time. Sale is a H-O-F type player and the best pitcher the Sox have had in my 36 years. The fact that they had to trade him because they couldn't build around him still irritates me.2 points

Hard to fault Renteria for bullpen usage. I think Hahn has purposely given him the worst collection of right handers in the league. Hamilton, Burr, Ruiz, Zach Thompson, Fulmer, Frare, and Bummer would be every bit as “good” as what they’re running out there now, they just don’t want to bring any of them up. When Minaya, a guy who walks about a man an inning, is your best RHP in the pen, nothing is tactics.1 point

If he were never to recover. If he does have surgery, the extra year of control in exchange for some September starts is a tremendous trade.1 point

If he eventually needs shoulder surgery what does it matter if he pitches for the Sox now or mid-April next year?1 point

The problems with this organization are systemic and run far deeper than the manager.1 point

I want to see him too but he's a lefty (if I'm not mistaken) and our lefty relievers are actually pretty solid in Fry, Avilan, and Cedeno. There's also Bummer who will probably get the call too. IMO Avilan and Cedeno should be traded, with Frare and Bummer taking their spots.1 point

How is Rodon their last large piece? What about Abreu, Avi, Sanchez, Shields? None of these guys have any future with the White Sox. Abreu should have been moved a long time ago. Let Davidson, Skole, or Casey Gillapsie play first until Gavin Sheets is ready. Same for Avi. Give the playing time in Right to Cordell, Leury, and Tilson. DFA Shields and promote Stephens or Jordan Guerrero. The Sox are giving way too much playing time to guys who do not factor into their long term plans.1 point

Ricky's boys with the tank loss. Highlight of the game was the nun's first pitch. Yoan would have struck out looking on it1 point

You need to STFU & think before saying shit that isn’t true. Implying the Sox’s rebuild has been pitching focused or we lack high-end positional talent is quite frankly a bold faced lie. Moncada (BA #2 - 2016) Anderson (BA #45 - 2015) Jimenez (BA #3 / MP #3 / FG #3) Robert (BA #46 / MP #25 / FG #20) Madrigal (BA #30 / MP #32 / FG #23) Collins (FG #67) Rutherford (MP #88) Adolfo (FG #88 / KL top 50 HM) Basabe (FG #84) That’s nine guys who placed on a top 100 list. That doesn’t include our top three picks from the 2017 draft or our 2nd round pick from this year’s draft. All four of those guys have a chance to make one those lists in the future, with Gonzalez being a real possibility this offseason. There is a ton of positional talent in the organization and it’s an essential part of the rebuild no matter how you try to spin things.1 point
