Maybe Harper is not worth $350 million. Maybe he isn't worth more than Machado got. Maybe he isn't worth as much as Machado got. Maybe even Machado isn't worth what Machado got. And maybe none of these free agents are worth what they get. The point is that this team is now an embarrassment and the few fans it had, in the same city as the widely adored "Cubbies," are ready to abandon the South Side. The people in the front office and ownership have botched this off season so badly, that they desperately need to do something to redeem themselves. The question is; Is there any other plausible move, which they could make this season, other than signing Harper, that would approach redemption, in the eyes of their fans? Maybe the answer to that question will help us all to determine what Bryce Harper is "worth".7 points

The funny thing is, just think about the fan reaction one way or the other... Sign Harper, bring all the fans back, make tons of money in ticket, concessions, merchandise, etc. sales Whiff on Machado and pass on Harper, everything goes to shit. How do the Sox not realize this?6 points

I am newish to this board and fully aware of banning rules, but can iWin get the heave for this foolish charade. It wastes server space and serves zero purpose here.6 points

I plead guilty. I actually predicted it. Call me naive and foolish. I just can't accept that this organization is really that dishonest, inept and obtuse.5 points

I was of the same opinion up until Manny's press conference today. After Manny said how much Jay and Alonso talked about how great SD is and how helpful they we're in his decision to go there, FUCK THEM. Get them the FUCK off this team. They were brought here to help recruit Manny. Jay wouldn't even have Major league job right now if it wasn't for Hahn giving him $4M to be a recruiter, and instead, they both helped Manny choose San Diego. I'm just as mad as I was today about that than I was when SD first signed Manny. These fucks have no room on this roster after pulling that shit. Their loyalty was bought, especially Jay, when they were acquired and they both fucked up. Fuck them.4 points

Eh, that's also a dick thing to say. I'm furious at the Sox, but the Padres give me a lot of reasons to hate them. Tatis and Machado don't, but the Padres FO does from comments like this to Shields medicals.4 points

The guy has been a troll when he was iwinforRon and a couple of other Ron handles. This board needs a scoreboard for the few folks that really have nothing left in life but to wander around internet message boards they are not even interested in because the world has nothing other than this to offer them4 points

Harper doesn't want to go the Phillies ... I think my Pad's are in the drivers seat here.4 points

Yep. Could not agree more. Especially Jay. Fucker even said in a prior interview before Manny signed he would not get involved because it's Manny's business. Clearly that's not the case. These guys deserve whatever negative fan reaction they receive as long as they are on the team.3 points

I’m sure they are, just saying I’d personally be willing to contribute that much towards one. And I’m talking about putting money towards shaming the organization. These clowns deserve to be ridiculed and while a billboard will most certainly not get anyone fired it would at least create some headlines and put a dent in these scumbags’ egos. That is money well spent IMO.3 points

It’s pretty sad that we have to cheer for an old man to die in order for us to ever spend like a normal franchise.3 points

Almost. As soon as Harper signs elsewhere and if we learn that the Sox didn't make a reasonable offer, I will believe that ownership and the front office are indeed dishonest, inept and obtuse. The burden of proof is on them, but they still have a chance to redeem themselves.3 points

Anyone who thinks the Sox are actually going to pay more for Harper are naive at best and suckers at worst. Why do we waste our time in this thread?3 points

I thought you didn't like using one stat? You said... Yet, you only seem to be citing one stat. Harper isn't about the defense. Who cares. DH him. He gets on base. He draws walks. He hits doubles. He hits Home Runs. He is an offensive force.3 points

Well, clearly I am arguing with wall. I am not some huge proponent of backing up the Brinks Truck for Harper, but this narrative that he is an average player asinine.3 points

They will bring up Cease and Dunning when they are ready, and it will have NOTHING to do with Santana and/or Nova.3 points

Good for him. Good for Machado. We have absolutely no reason to be mad at Manny or anyone with the Padres. Everyone keep your anger at the Sox and hit them in the pocket book.3 points

I mean he wanted 5 million but elite players want to take less money to play for the White Sox, Ervin bought in.3 points

Only reason I don’t care is because it’s a minor league deal. Otherwise, more mediocrity from the expert on all things mediocre himself, Rick Hahn. Sign Harper and I will start caring.3 points

The White Sox are OUT on Brycr Harper. They are not even submitting a bid. They are high on their outfield depth and feel it's a risk not worth taking... and as sad as it is to say, I agree. Harper doesn't fit. Manny did.3 points

This quote won’t even go over well on a Sox message board THIS week. How has your idiotic franchise gone longer than the White Sox without a playoff appearance...2006, to be exact. No World Series titles? How did 1984 go for you? Chargers? You’re Ozzie Smith (before a dumbass trade to the Cards), Rollie Fingers, Mark Davis, Trevor Hoffman, Tony Gwynn and lame-ass mustard and brown jerseys that ruined all my 1983 baseball cards.3 points

So you are holding the message board hostage until the franchise does what you want. Seems reasonable.2 points

Boom, I've been calling this since we've signed Machado that they will get CarGo. "We've coveted Carlos for a long period of time, and are excited to add him to the 40 man roster. He will help mentor our young players and help build this roster into winning multiple championships."2 points

Yeah, the seat at the table BS is just that. These assholes literally have one chance left to make this right...a fucking 26 year old future HOFer (most likely) is sitting there for the taking....you have tons of $ to spend, and the fans on the cusp of a full blown mutiny. If these 3 idiots running things at the top can't see just how important it is to sign Bryce, I just have no words.2 points
-
The seat at the table comments were some of the most pathetic things I’ve seen by a sports organization. This wasn’t like a 5 star recruit that had you in their top five because the they actually liked your school, etc. The Taliban semipro baseball team would have had a shot at the table if they were offering Manny enough money.2 points
-
It would also say something about the Royals and then list 10 random names.2 points

2 things...an observation and a question. Observation: Again...I believe this is 99% moot, but I think right now we have a rare situation with Bryce Harper. This might be a case where you ask yourself...Bryce Harper isn't a $350M baseball player, but how much is he worth to THIS franchise right now given the events of the last week? Bid accordingly. Question: Hearing a lot about the "seat at the table" jargon. I guess I was unaware that it was an accomplishment to have a seat at the table. Is it a common thing for free agents to deny meeting with teams who declare their interest in paying them millions and sometimes hundreds of millions of dollars? Is there ANY sort of element of accomplishment that one has by securing a "seat at the table?" I would think there aren't many MLB teams right now that are in a more lowly state as we are, but we had a "seat at the table" with these guys. Would think that would come down to a simple phone call and a Outlook calendar appointment setup, but maybe I'm wrong.2 points

Yes, with the hindsight of knowing how miserably Hahn would fail, I too would have rather seen Avisail Garcia in RF and Palka at DH full time over the combination of Alonso and Jay.2 points
-
This whole fiasco is worse than Lebron 2010. They offered him the max deal and he didn't want to sign with the Bulls. This whole situation is like if the Bulls didn't think it was necessary to offer the max because they signed two of Lebrons friends.2 points

Hear me out. We rename the ChiSox Bar & Grill to Harper's Bazaar & Grillitorium. He gets to dictate the menu and 50% of profits for the next 20 years. No way Boras turns that down.2 points

According to sources, JR moderately surprised that Bryce wants more money than JR’s limits. But since it isn’t his first rodeo, he is going to allow Bryce to keep his beard and his hair long. Hahn thinks better than even chance Bryce wants something more than facial hair guarantees.2 points

Neither of these guys are HOF'ers. Machado has a career OPS in the low 800s. He's an allstar caliber player but you guys act like we missed on a transformative like Trout or Arod. We didn't. There was a time when I would have said go out and sign the 5 WAR guy who may have the potential to give you 7 WAR in a good year for big money but in todays market that isn't where the value is. The value right now is with the veterans due to a combination of a bunch of things. The point is I'm confident there will be somebody worth signing when we are ready to be competitive whether that is a huge splash guy like Harper or Machado or more of a bunch of 3-4 WAR veterans to fill holes. When you have guys like Grandal and Moose being forced to settle for one year deals. When you have Pollock signing for 60 million. Why would you even want to tie up Machado or Harper in a record breaking contract? Where is the upside when salaries are at best flat right now?2 points
