This thread is fucking ridiculous. What a bunch of assholes. This is right on. Burger is fine at 3B. If he doesn't play 3B in the majors, it's because of the injuries or because the Sox have a 3B already IMO. He hits enough to play 1B though. He's also a super high character kid that I wouldn't count out personally. I'm excited to see him this year.3 points

The last few pages of this thread are puzzling to me. The deal hasn't been officially announced yet for whatever reason but it's happening. Passan and Rosenthal are the goods and Rosenthal has the details. It's happening. No need to question the veracity of the reports. The deal is also a no brainer for both parties. Eloy gets $43 million and likely $77 million. It's also a great deal for the Sox. If he's a bust which is super unlikely, they only lose $43 million. If he's great, it's an absolute bargain. If he's just good, then the contract is probably fair. This deal wasn't happening "after" Eloy played in the majors. Making him "prove it" in the big leagues first wasn't an option in this case. It also only gives the Sox one extra year of control but buying out the arbitration years is very valuable. Eloy was going to qualify for Super Two status. This means he would have had 3 league minimum years followed by 4 arbitration years. He was likely to receive $50-$60 million through the arb process if he's what everyone thinks he is. The Sox are "overpaying" in the beginning to get a favorable deal in the backend and gambling on the upside to do so. I've seen his "horrible defense" referenced. That's just not true at all. He's not a great defender but he's fine. He'll be a LF because he doesn't really have the arm for RF but his defensive ineptitude is getting very much overblown. The White Sox are about to lock up a 22 year old slugger that very likely will be a star for the majority of his contract. There really is no reason to be complaining about this.3 points

Here are pictures of Jake Burger in college. And here are some of his accolades... - MVC Defensive Player of the Year (2016) - ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award (2016) - MVC All-Defensive Team (2016) "Baseball America and the NCBWA ... Also voted as the top defensive third baseman in all of Division I baseball with his selection to the ABCA's Rawlings Gold Glove Team ... Tabbed a first-team All-MVC pick and the league's defensive player of the year" And then here's a blurb written last year about Burger before he tore his Achilles....for the 1st time. "He has a strong arm, good hands, and any talks of him moving from third base are ludicrous. I watched Jake Burger for his entire career at Missouri State — having season tickets on the third base side, with media access as well. His fielding is superb, with that rocket of an arm to go with it." If Jake Burger can't play defense at 3B anymore, it's because he tore his Achilles twice, not because he's an odd sized 3B.3 points

Can we stop with this meme? He costs a pick and wants 4 years. It makes no sense.2 points

1) Demand the league office reverse the Shields trade in the Padres scandal 2) Rebuild2 points

It is clearly up for debate whether Moncada will be "fine" at third. Remember when Gordon Beckham was the clearly the White Sox future at second base? Jerking around one of the most important pieces of your rebuild for a kid who hasn't even played a single game in AA is not a wise move.2 points

Hot take... he’s bad regardless of Spring Training. That’s not really going out on a limb. Next step will be seeing if he can be a reliever.2 points
-
Just to make sure I understand how spring training works: If you are good, it doesn't mean anything. But if you are bad, it means you are bad. Is that accurate? (My hopes certainly are not high for Giolito, but I just want to make sure I understand how spring training results work)2 points

One key difference: Fulmer has never dominated at any minor league level. Hansen led the minors in K’s. Hansen just needs to return to form. Fulmer needs to form.2 points

Personally, I really don't like it. Yoan showed flashes of good range and potential at 2nd. His bat is also more valuable at 2nd. He can be a top 2nd baseman imo. I also don't like the idea of switching his position for a dude who isn't even in the majors yet (Madrigal). Let Yoan focus on improving at the plate. I think this is another poor move by the goon squad that is our front office.1 point

Pretty much. Can’t wait until we scoop the 2020 version of Alex Rios and Hahn says “I told you the money would be spent”.1 point

At the time I thought we had a legitimate shot starting in 2014 to pull one off in 3 years and we made legitimate progress in 2014 compared to 2013, but then we declared our 72 win team was ready to win right now and was willing to sacrifice 2016 for wins in 2015. It was a terrible decision top to bottom. A complete failure of Rick Hahn and company to understand their own roster, free agency, or the moves they were making But in hindsight, even if we hadn't, the guys making player development and selection decisions did such an awful job everywhere else that it really wasn't going to matter what we did, we were going to be in the 60s in wins by 2018-2019. Spend a lot more money and they're still in the 60s in wins and they've got Alex Gordon out in the OF or something like that. Try to do a short rebuild starting in 2014 and by 2017 they're falling back down as Quintana and Eaton break down and as they fail to develop anyone else. In either of these setups they have nothing worth any value to trade and we're looking at a bottom-5 system and a 65 win team in 2019. Literally, the only version of the last 6 years that gives us a path forward is the one we're on right now. Everything might still turn around with the amount of talent in this group, even if it seems unlikely right now at least the guys exist. Given our organization, this is actually the best case scenario, and it actually could have been far worse.1 point

With Sale off the market, Cole to the Yankees seems like a perfect match. Sabathia and Tanaka are FAs/retirees from their rotation next year so they have the money and need.1 point

A supposedley top 5 farm system should have no room for players like Alcides Escobar.1 point

I'm totally cool with it because everybody knows the Sox' MLB coaching staff and scouting department is legendary and if they think it's the right move you have to trust them.1 point

With the Goldy news (anyone hear he agreed to an extension yesterday?), that means Abreu is the best option, unless you want to consider Castellanos a 1B, and position he hasn't played an inning of in his career. Bet Sox either extend Jose, or resign him next offseason. Abreu + Castellanos + Grandal + Cole would be a very nice offseason. Lineup by June 2020: Madrigal 2B, Moncada 3B, Abreu 1B, Eloy LF, Castellanos DH, Grandal C, Adolfo RF, Robert CF, Anderson SS Cole, Rodon, Cease, Kopech, Lopez1 point

Gonna suck to see Sale donning a Red Sox hat on his hall of fame plaque at this rate.1 point

The money will be spent. The problem is , as time goes on, the money will be spent on crapier and craper players. If this is showing anything, it's the extent of the White Sox failure this past offseason. Colossal and epic.1 point

Who will the money be spent on? Shit, next years free agent class sucks. I remember certain board members tried to say otherwise. We’re screwed for next year. But hey, the money will be spent!1 point

I don’t know man, this really seems like an overpay to me. Bregman just got $100M for five addional seasons (including two free agent years). However, when you factor in his pre-arb salaries from 2017 to 2019, they essentially got eight seasons of control for a total of $102M. This is for a durable 24 year old coming off a 7.6 win season. Meanwhile, Eloy who has never had a single at-bat in the majors and has a history of soft tissue injuries is potentially getting $75M over eight years. Yes, only $43M of that is guaranteed (still unprecedented), but we’re talking about $27M difference between him and one of the best young players in all of baseball. While I’m glad we’ve bought out a free agent year, this is extension is absolutely crazy to me from a benchmarking standpoint. Again, I don’t dislike the move, just think it’s way more player friendly than team friendly based on recent extension & arbitration figures.1 point

Jabari was at my gym during the Alll Star break and saw him with his shirt off. He isn't fat at all, but isn't exactly ripped which you would expect of an NBA player. Not with the NBA players around him, if you saw him in shorts and a tshirt around normal people, he wouldn't seem a little bloated at all. But for an NBA player, he obviously is. But he was working his ass off that day with a trainer.1 point

OMG what's wrong with you ?? How dare you not just look at a 3 second video and declare him unfit for duty and criticize his recovery , conditioning and dedication and plan out his entire future at 1b/DH.1 point

I think I said this earlier but Kris Bryant will earn a total of around $70 to $75 million via salary arbitration year after year before he hits free agency. The Sox are definitely expecting Eloy to be a star. If he becomes one, it will be a good deal. If he doesn’t, it won’t be a very good deal. But the money won’t kill them either way. The Sox are obviously very concerned with risk and they are comfortable with giving out this type of money (see Luis Robert contract) but obviously not $300 million guaranteed.1 point

The amount of hot takes driven off some spring training outings is pretty nuts around here. This shit is more or less meaningless, especially for pitchers IMO.1 point

I think people have this way backwards. When you use something that you didnt create, you know that you are using someone elses stuff. This is basic intellectual property law. Its the person who uses it job to make sure that they are allowed to, not the other way around. When someone asks "Can I use this image from the web?" My answer is "Did you get permission?". Its not really a hard concept. They stole her content, she has no responsibility to respond to them.1 point
