  1. It’s not just about Verlander. The current theme is that teams are extending their top players before they hit free agency — Arenado, Trout, Goldschmidt, Sale, Verlander, etc. Boegarts and Rendon are now the best guys available next offseason if they don’t get extended and they don’t really fit the Sox now with Moncada at 3B, Anderson at SS, and Madrigal expected to take over 2B eventually. This is why when you have targeted a premier player, you lock the guy up and don’t half-ass around with a team friendly offer like the Sox tried to do. The Sox will not have another shot at a 26 year old stud for $300 to $330 million. They blew it... period.

  2. Go work on your defense so you aren’t a below average player. ?

  4. Ok, now I’m convinced your an internet-based algorithm. Twitter did not make them realize it was a bad trade. The Twitter leak allowed other teams to see the offer the Sox had made and allowed them to express their own viewpoints on value. The Dodgers then reassessed the situation and decided they needed more from the Sox to pull the trigger. None of this is very far-fetched and I’m shocked you’re struggling with this so much.

  5. That makes no sense to me at all. The only way I can imagine that being plausible is if the leak led another team to jump in and outbid the White Sox for a player. Which, since Pederson has not been traded, would lead me to believe that some kind of leak is not what stopped it from happening.

  6. For Machado or Harper, sure. For Keuchel? Pass.

  7. A draft pick is worth more to me than a declining asset that will be gone before we are good again.

  8. His comment was right on. Whether the Sox would have gone after Verlander or actually had a chance, is anyone’s guess, but it is another top line guyout of next years pool, which seems to be draining quickly. The Sox aren’t going to have another opportunity with just the Padres as their competition. They fucked up. Big time. Fewer stars, more big spenders interested means the Sox go back to signing their lowered level guys , hope everything goes right, and maintaining payroll space so they can add at the deadline when they are 10 games out.

  9. Or he was just a bust because of a hitch in his swing.

  10. No, I'm going to blame Hahn. Reinsdorf is a joke and we all know it, but if you think Hahn and KW are capable, you're an even bigger idiot than they are.

  11. When the Sox are winning 78-84 games every year from 2021-2024 because no one is signing here because 1) the organization is a joke or 2) every good player got an extension, you'll remember how big of a loser Rick Hahn is for not guaranteeing another 50 million dollars to a 26 year old hall of famer.

  12. The draft pick alone is enough for me to pass.

  13. Can we stop with this meme? He costs a pick and wants 4 years. It makes no sense.

  14. Personally, I really don't like it. Yoan showed flashes of good range and potential at 2nd. His bat is also more valuable at 2nd. He can be a top 2nd baseman imo. I also don't like the idea of switching his position for a dude who isn't even in the majors yet (Madrigal). Let Yoan focus on improving at the plate. I think this is another poor move by the goon squad that is our front office.

  15. I'm not happy, but I'm not upset that it fell through. We heard rumors about Laz Rivera being included we heard another rumor about Rutherford being included. This team isn't going anywhere in 2019, and Joc Pederson won't put us over the top for 2020 either. No big deal after you lose out on Machado/Harper and then Dunning gets TJS. The timeline is going the wrong direction.

  16. I think the Sox see 2020 as another tank year. 2021 should be the first year where all the kids are up together. The Sox should be ready to make some serious noise in 2022 hopefully. The Sox won't be ready to add an expensive short term contract for a TOR arm for another 2-3 years most likely.

  17. You always take BPA. If that’s Vaughn, Gavin Sheets shouldn’t prevent you from taking him no matter how well he is doing.

  18. Big year for this guy. He needs to show results this year IMO if we're going to count him towards being a key cog in the rebuild.

  19. You may find this hard to believe, but I hate Rick Hahn more than you do. I just try to be objective in my criticism of him.

  20. What is stupid about this? Like I am so confused here. That they changed their mind? Teams change their minds all the time for all sorts of reasons.
    1 point
  21. And I'm convinced you must be Rick Hahn to be so emphatically insistent that the only way this could possibly go down is one where Rick Hahn is totally doing everything right and the Dodgers must just be fools who had no idea of the value of their own player until twitter happened.

  22. You make everything way too black and white. Just because the Dodgers didn’t take a deal now, does not mean they don’t plan on trading him at some point in the future. Based on the calls they received after the leak, the Dodgers may have reason to believe that they’ll have a much bigger market come June or July. Also, the White Sox had a deal in place for Jose Quintana in Decemeber of 2016, saw it fall through, and decided to wait seven months before ultimately dealing him. These guys aren’t selling assets that are automatically depreciating in value, sometimes holding for a period of time is the best course of action.

  23. He specifically mentioned he had a framework for a trade agreed to and that after the leak came out the other GM increased his ask. He implied that typically this is the result of other GMs entering the mix and causing the price to change.

  25. Is this a serious post? Dude potentially lost a deal because it leaked out on Twitter and he can’t be mad because it was too one-sided?

  27. The rumored offer was incredibly light though. It’s very possible a team or teams reached out to the Dodgers after they saw the names included in our offer (Fulmer, Bummer) and Friedman simply decided now was not the right to move him and that he could get more at a later date from one of those clubs.

  28. Which is why he was traded to one of those teams making a better offer?

  29. After the spring Leury's had, I want him playing as much as possible (presuming health). Be it in CF or 2B.

  31. The Sox underestimated the player’s desire to get his market value. I remember news circulating that Machado wanted $300 million guaranteed, period. Some team was going to pony up the money eventually. The Sox sat on their hands with their $250 million guaranteed offer and didn’t budge because they wanted to sign a premier talent at their own team friendly price. It’s no surprise they whiffed and embarrassed themselves.

  32. He’s too busy ignoring the fact that there will be no one good left for the Sox to sign next offseason. “The money will be spent!!!”

  33. Pretty much. Can’t wait until we scoop the 2020 version of Alex Rios and Hahn says “I told you the money would be spent”.

  34. Almost as if none are available now Missing Manny was such an EPIC fail.

  35. Where was that poster who kept arguing with me that missing out on Machado and Harper was no big deal because there would be so many good free agents to sign next offseason? ? The good options are dropping like flies.

  36. I think his natural position is actually 3B. That is where I beleive he played the majority of the time in Cuba. I do believe he said last season his preferred position is 2B, but he has said recently he is totally good with playing 3B.

  37. Gonna suck to see Sale donning a Red Sox hat on his hall of fame plaque at this rate.

  38. The money will be spent. The problem is , as time goes on, the money will be spent on crapier and craper players. If this is showing anything, it's the extent of the White Sox failure this past offseason. Colossal and epic.

  42. I get the impression that Madrigal will be the White Sox 2nd baseman Opening Day 2020. Moncada might as well get use to 3rd base now. Besides, who else do the White Sox have in there system now who is a 3rd baseman?
    1 point
  43. Forget about CF. That already belongs to Luis Robert.

  44. Madrigal is the White Sox second baseman of the future. And it might be real soon. That being the case, the move of Moncada to 3rd base makes sense.
