Andrew Vaughn = Paul Konerko CJ Abrams = Micah Johnson ....or Ozzie Guillen Like, that's really the extent of the talent evaluation you just did.9 points

Feel free to express your opinion, just be prepared for it to be called out when it's incredibly lazy. @bmags has very rightfully called me out for saying I thought Trae Young would bomb in the NBA. Your comparison of Vaughn to Collins and Burger seems to be limited to "can get on base and has power." It also appears that you just took two names White Sox fans would know at random, hence why I picked Micah Johnson and Ozzie Guillen. Let's go with Collins first. A left-handed, true outcome catcher with defensive question marks, good size. In college, his walks and strikeouts were fairly even. Grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 30 | Arm: 45 | Field: 40 | Overall: 55 Now, Vaughn. A right-handed, advanced hit tool, undersized first baseman who fields his position well. Walks far more than he strikes out. Has ungodly OBP. Hit: 60 | Power: 60 | Run: 30 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 60 Similarities: Slow runners, raw power, can draw walks. Differences: Positions, handedness, fielding capabilities, hitting abilities, strikeout rates, level of raw power, OBP (Vaughn's is absurd). Let's add Burger in. A right-handed third baseman, was named Gold Glover in his final college season. Pre-injury had decent enough speed for his size. Grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55 Similarities: Right-handed hitters, raw power, can field their position well Differences: Position, speed (at the time, unclear how Burger has recovered), power levels, OBP (again, Vaughn's is stupid good), hit tool. Well, Micah Johnson had an 80 run tool and was blindingly fast. He played middle infield for the Chicago White Sox. That's essentially the depth of the analysis we were provided with Jake Burger and Zack Collins for Andrew Vaughn. So then you went and threw out Fernando Tatis Jr. as a comp for Abrams, which makes no sense in his present state. I've looked at film. But let's also look at grades of all three aforementioned players. Tatis: Hit: 60 | Power: 60 | Run: 60 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 70 Abrams: Hit: 55 | Power: 40 | Run: 75 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 60 Johnson: Hit: 55 | Power: 35 | Run: 80 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50 So Tatis comes in with far more power, whereas Abrams calling card is speed, much like Johnson. Tatis is a true shortstop, while we've already seen discussion about how Abrams might not stick at short. That sounds more Johnson than Tatis. So we've got a speed burner that might not stick at his position. Edit: If I were drafting, I might take Abrams over Vaughn, but that's because the Sox are in dire need of some non-1B/DH talent in addition to a "next wave" of prospects and I'd stupidly draft for need.4 points

Love our White Sox. Many teams play to win divisions. The Sox play for one day on the calendar, draft day.3 points

We should just DFA him. He had some use when he was briefly walking more than he was striking out, but it seems that's over now.3 points

We signed him 14 years ago. Maybe he wanted to retire as a White Sox.3 points

I'm being sarcastic. I don't care what they look like. The guy sucks. I would have rather seen Hahn donate his $9 million dollar salary to White Sox charities.2 points

GIDP for Guerrero. 6-38. It's nice watching someone else's prospects come up and blow. We're not alone, guys!2 points
-
Exactly. Never understood the hate for that guy. He made just 30 starts with the Sox and put up 4.8 fWAR, what the hell more do people want from the guy?2 points

Edwin Jackson was actually pretty good for the Sox. 11-9 wit a 3.66 ERA and 3.22 FIP. 174 Ks to 57 walks.2 points

Generally speaking, when you remove a team's top 5 prospects, the farm system is going to look pretty bad.2 points

Even though he hasn't been putting up great numbers he still looks much better to me than he did throughout last year.2 points

They need to really hope Cease, Kopech, Madrigal, and Robert are above average. We are going to have to spend a ton of money on pitching.1 point

Eh he'd probably just accept the assignment to Charlotte and be back in a month as Vizquel's bench coach1 point

Rutschman. Talents at a premium position that become available to you don't come around all that often.1 point

Renteria is a Tank Manager. Like like a lot of these pitchers are innings-eaters. In that respect, they do their jobs well. This is what ownership wants.1 point

Besides Lopez/Giolito, Cease could be the only guy that can get out of the 1st without getting bombed, and even Lopez/Giolito have games where they get bombed in the 1st inning. The bullpen is gonna be dead by July.1 point

Why do we have one of the hottest hitters in baseball, (McAnn) on the bench. I understand catchers can’t play everyday, but why not put Abreu at first and DH McAnn. Oh, that’s right, Renteria makes out the lineup!1 point

Alonso batting .176 followed by Castillo hitting .169 in the 4 and 5 slot in the batting order. It's hard to believe we're trying to win. I'm pretty sure 99.9% of fans could find a lineup with a better chance of being productive.1 point

Not “great” but by all accounts a 125 wRC+ is certainly “good.” Keep in mind he turns 24 this month. I’d be thrilled with a 125 wRC+ 3b that just turned 24 if he maintains it for the entire season.1 point

This is the Law comment, upon which we should be focusing; "plenty of scouts who agree with me that his (Rutschman's) hit tool isn't anywhere near what Vaughn's is". If it's true that either Rutschman is not that good of a hitter, or Vaughn really is that special of a hitter, that could have a huge impact on the top of the Draft. It may mean that Adley doesn't go #1, which has pretty much been a foregone conclusion. It also may mean that the Sox could have a very interesting choice to make. At this point, I have no idea. However, I will say this; Even if Rutschman isn't as good of a hitter as Vaughn, I would still rate him higher, based upon the fact that he is a switch hitter and is a very good defensive catcher. That has to represent more value than a slow, right handed hitting, first baseman. What Rutschman represents is a lot more useful and a lot harder to find.1 point

Just seeing the phrase "concurrent surgeries" at the end of that article made me squirm. Who would ever think that's ok? Especially when it's something that could result in spinal cord damage.1 point

For me, the frustrating thing with this crop of AAAA types was the stupid and uneven way they were handled. Engel has 1 MLB caliber tool, but his complete and utter lack of any sort of ability to hit made his 857 MLB PAs seem to be a waste of time. Him being scouted by the Doug Laumann Clown College, and [snicker] signed in the 19th round by a failed front office meant that he was likely never a prospect in the FIRST PLACE. Tilson was actually scouted, drafted, and developed by a [then] successful and intelligent front office in St. Louis. Him being drafted in the 2nd round, and then his relative prospect status in a decent organization makes me more interested in what he might do with more of a look. His injuries aside, I can't understand why he's only had 123 PA leading into this season. Cordell doesn't seem to have any PLUS tools, but then, he doesn't suffer from an abject and crippling LACK of any one tool that would prevent him from at least having more of a look. Though, again, his injury history has also sidetracked him hereto fore. I suppose on balance, Engel's utter shittiness at hitting, yet him having 9,999 lives in the MLB roster was typical of a stupid organization like this one. In a rebuild, a team HAS TO get lucky with the odd AAAA type becoming a cromulent piece of the 25 man. Yet, 857 PAs were squandered on a 19th round no-hoper who could never fucking hit, when other, less flawed options are/were available. Were they too stupid to figure out that Engel isn't MLB caliber, or was it simply Tilson's/Cordell's health? Who knows. And yes, I recognize that Tilson and Cordell and Delmonico are all probably AAAA nothing burgers. But, they have to find out if any of them can provide more value than Engel's one MLB caliber tool, rather than wasting PAs on players who don't have the requisite level of OVERALL ability.1 point

Never, never put something that seems totally illogical past the White Sox front office. I've seen them far to many times make decision that make you sit back and ask, "what could they possibly be thinking?"1 point

Ok...I'll be Devil's Advocate here. 1st...everybody thought at the time acquiring Giolito, Lopez and Dunning was a ridiculously one-sided score at the time. It's not really Hahn's fault that for some reason Giolito and Lopez really hasn't developed as fast or even at all like most thought. So then you come down to...is it Cooper's fault? Is it Hahn's fault Dunning had to have TJ? Same with Kopech...not Hahn's fault he needed TJ as well. On the flip side....you have Cease who is going to be a star IMO...and when Kopech gets back he eventually will be as well. Hopefully that pushes Giolito and Lopez as well. Most figured when Eloy showed up it would push Moncada...and he hasn't disappointed. Yoan is quasi super star status right now IMO. We haven't even touched what Eloy can do yet...and he will rake. It's a matter of time. And let's not forget the young super star in waiting down in Birmingham either...Mr Luis Robert. So yeah...it sucks right now that the Sox haven't lived up to everyone's hopes and expectations...but a lot of this is hardly Hahn's fault. Not landing Manny...partially. Giving idiotic contracts to the likes of Jon Jay and Jones...yeah. But there really is a light at the end of the tunnel IMO. And last but not least...he really scored with the signing of McCann...who's been nothing short of spectacular so far. His only mistake was only making it a one year deal.1 point
