  1. Personally I like the mixed reactions. Kind of like talking to a bunch of guys at a picnic. Some are more knowledgeable than others. Some are glass half full others half empty. My only draw the line issue is with personal attack.

  3. This. Anyone who says Renteria is probably either a milennial, or simply wasn't paying attention. And, this. When Ventura was hired, that was the 1st moment I got into the mindset of "every fucking clown in the front office needs to be fired." I still havent wavered from that viewpoint all these years later. When a GOOD organization, needs to hire too talent, the interview teaches the org about themselves as much as it does about the interviewee. Having a thorough and competitive process is essential in a competitive industry. Otherwise, you end up with incompetence, ignorance, and failure among your decision-makers. The fact that this org hasn't had a competitive process for ANY of the major hirees (manager, scouting director, director of player development , etc...) is a big fucking problem. Its CENTRAL to why this org never seems to progress, when other orgs seem to make leaps forward. It's a massive part of why this team has been among the suckiest sucks that have ever sucked over the past decade or so. Again, I just throw this non-competitive process onto the mountain of reasons why every last member of the front office needs to be fired. Seriously, just blow it up, & start over. This fandom deserves better.

  4. Latest example, also from the Braves: Austin Riley. First 10 games in the bigs: batting .350 with 5 HR's and 12 RBI's. The Braves have this rebuild thing down to a science. Won their division last year in Year 3 of their rebuild and they're still cranking out stars. The Sox have no clue how this should be done.

  5. There's some value on the other side though...we see teams like the Braves call up an Acuna or the Nationals call up a Soto or the Dodgers call up a Bellinger and these guys are somewhere between very good and great in their first season. Not every prospect can do that I understand, but what exactly are the White Sox doing so different that none of their guys get off to good starts?

  11. Bevington. Also, Rick this season is doing an amazing job. I still expect this team to lose a zillion games but as of tonight, this team has overachieved big time. And that is partly because of Ricky. Bevington had no highlights. Ricky also is better than Robin.

  12. During Rocky's tenure, he hasn't had great teams. That is no mystery. IMO, the effect a manager can have on a teams performance isn't massive, barring extremes. Ricky has managed to put the worst hitters on the team at the cleanup spot regularly. He is putting awful hitters in an important spot and giving them more ABs then better hitters. Ricky's teams have an affinity for the bunt. They bunt too damn much. The wrong players are bunting. Ricky's teams have been awful in the field as well. I don't care if they

  13. I'll read the thread after posting this. Just caught up on the game/box score. Wow, if there was ever any question we're still tanking, just look at tonight's game. We pretty much conceded it by pitching the guys we pitched. And on the nights we lose, our lineup still looks so flawed. I do think Ricky has done about the best anybody could do with what he's been given to work with. Minnesota really spanked the Sox tonight. Boring, horrific outing for Chicago. Now I'll read the thread! Go Sox! Tornadoes go away!

  14. It’s less about who they got for him and more about it being another example of how freaking awful the coaching staff is throughout the organization?

  15. We have an incredible amount of star talent already on the big club and approximately a year away. I would beef up quality starting pitching as much as budget will allow. Kopech & Rodon will be back but not at full throttle for awhile. Cease will be getting his feet wet. Spend the money on pitching and don't shoot your wad on some over payed slugger. Pitching-defense-and a balanced offense wins baseball games. Do all that and still need a stud then I'm all in. Build the sound foundation first.

  17. Here’s Freddy Garcia’s 2005 game log. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=garcifr03&t=p&year=2005 By all metrics, Garcia had a great 2005 season - 14-8 record, 3.87 ERA, 4.06 FIP, 1.25 WHIP, 20 quality starts out of 33. You’ll notice that in 7 of his starts, he got absolutely rocked - 5 ER or more. In a five of his of other starts he gave up 4 ER in 6 to 7 innings- pretty mediocre to bad numbers. i suppose my point is that 7 times out of 33, in one of his “good years,” a year in fact that led us to a world title, solidly #2-3 starter, reliable Freddy Garcia went out and got himself rocked. 21% of the time. In another 5 starts, he was meh to bad. That brings the total of bad starts to 36%. Sometimes he was shelled by good teams and sometimes by bad teams. this is kind of why I am more encouraged by Lopez’ 6 good to great starts than discouraged by his 5 bad ones. Yes, I know 6/11 is a lot worse than 70% but the growth is still happening.

  18. Unfortunately I rarely get to sit down and watch an entire Sox game but I did today...also unfortunately. I come to Soxtalk to occasionally gripe if something ticks me off because there are others here that care about the Sox and otherwise I'm just talking to my couch.

  19. It’s time to send Herrera to the IL. He is obviously far too (adversely) affected by his back strain to be effective, at this point in time. After this appearance, in eight (8) May outings, Herrera’s ERA is 17.05 in 6.1 IP, with 12 ER, 15 H, 6 BB, 5 K, 3 HR and a 3.32 WHIP. This move should be a no brainer.

  21. Your right. And ok man you post something about how bad it is. But every play. Every move the same b****ing. Hello its a rebuild. There's gonna be great games and there will be stinkers like today. But Every time man. Every game even if they winning. A player farts and they b**** it stinks. The point is.... WE KNOW

  25. This is the difference between you and me. 100 percent difference. I disagree with everything you say here. It's all minutia. Who cares about the LaRoche saga? The guy was a horrific hitter by the time we got him and this sped up his leaving which was a blessing. Who cares if the kid shook up the locker room? Not me. Who cares if Sale cut up the jerseys? Many of you worry and rightly so about pitchers getting injured. Sale was mighty uncomfortable in those monstrocity uniforms. he said he didn't want to pitch in them. They did it anyway. he cut them up. I consider it hilarious and proper. Who cares??? This is a multi million dollar organization. Get out a new box of uniforms. Sale was a superstar for gosh sakes. Finally you probably also hate Ozzie for "quitting on the team." Again who cares?? The team was done; Ozzie was finished as a Sox. He sped the process. Big deal. I'm more concerned about the tank era (though I do love Eloy, Moncada, Timmy).

  28. What makes you believe the Sox will spend big? The Sox have already tried playing the add Tier B and C free agents to a good young core game and lost. It is insane to try that route again with Rick Hahn in charge. Either pony up for elite talent like Cole, Rendon, and JD Martinez or don't play the FA game at all.

  29. I just don’t know if I would completely change my opinion on López based on his inability to get shut down two of the AL’s best teams / offenses. He has otherwise looked really good - Boston and Minnesota. Minnesota is a buzzsaw right now. Outside of those two starts he has been very good

  31. If the rotation had come together we would have been competing now. The injuries to Kopech and Rodon left us short of quality arms for 2019. If management doesn't want to push Cease and/or buy outside help (Keuchel) then we just don't have enough to compete. Management has said all along that they will stay the course and not seek quick fixes. They are probably doing what's right for long term...just not easy to watch embarrassing losses. The development of Giolito, Anderson, Madrigal, McCann, Tilson, Bummer, Marshall & Jimenez has been really good news on that front. Anxious to see Robert, Collins & Madrigal develop. What we do in the trade / or not for Abreu, Colome & Herrera is the next big part of the puzzle.

  34. So. How worried are we about ReyLo at this point? He seems to have regressed to 2016 Nationals Lopez. I mentioned it in the game thread, but his stats this season: vs Bottom 5 offenses (5 games, DETx2, CLEx2, TOR): 31.2 IP, 7 ER (2.02 ERA), 2 HR, 8 BB, 31 K, 24 H vs Everyone else (6 games, KCx2, SEA, TB, BOS, MIN): 28 IP, 33 ER (10.61 ERA), 12 HR, 19 BB, 26 K, 37 H It isn't like he faced MIN 6 times either. Gio's resurgence this year makes it easier to be patient with Lopez, but it is frustrating to see him taking a major step backwards.

  35. Folks you have to look at the entire history of the franchise not just during your lifetimes. Granted Bevington, Ventura were pretty bad. One was psychotic the other didn't even want the job but they gave it to him anyway. Renteria is right there as well (all approved by JR by the way which speaks volumes...) But historically Lew Fonseca and certainly Jack Onslow may have been the worst. Onslow was so bad one of his players actually got into a fistfight with him. If memory serves the guy who did it was eventually traded for a young left handed pitcher named Billy Pierce. If my memory is correct at least something very good came out of that experience for the Sox. But it should be disturbing that many of these guys were fairly "recent" hires by the organization that have proven to be very bad at what they do. Even more disturbing is that again a lot of these guys are members of "the family" and instead of the Sox conducting a full scale search that is open to getting the best they already seem to have an idea of who is going to get the job and the guys they hire basically are working pretty cheap. Remember JR has gone on record as saying he's never though managers or head coaches make that much of a difference (which is why he's never really hired any outstanding ones with a proven track record.) He lucked into Ozzie as he did with Jeff Torborg.

  41. We can’t afford to waste another year of our young core. We need to start going for it next year and that means adding a quality starter to anchor a young rotation. Honestly, I’m still kind of upset we botched this offseason because with a couple of impactful veterans we may have had a chance at the second wild card spot.

  46. I'm not concerned; He's the one guy on our staff that I'm not worried about. I think Gio will turn it around as well. The real question will be what is there upside. In the case of Rey Lo, we are talking about a guy who has thrown just over 90 innings professionally at the big league level. I'm excited that he seems to be getting guys out and his stuff clearly plays. Pitchability and going deeper into games will come with experience. It isn't like his stuff deteriorates around the 80 pitch mark or something...this is more about him just learning to pitch more efficiently.

  47. I get it and conditions could be a very legitimate excuse, as the entire Sox staff appears to be walk happy. I just wonder why White Sox opponents aren't having the same issue.
    1 point
  48. He also hasn’t had the best pitching conditions. His second start was really cold, his third start was on seven days rest, and yesterday he was battling a stomach bug. His first start which was in a dome he only gave up two walks in six innings. These may be excuses to some extent, but the reality is those factors could have had some impact on his command. He’s also a young pitcher who should hopefully improve over time. And despite averaging 5.63 BB/9 his FIP is only 4.20, which demonstrates how teams haven’t been able to square up against his stuff and just how good he could be with even moderate improvement in command. There’s still development to be had here, but I fully expect the command issues to improve as the weather gets warm and as he gets on a normal pitching routine.
