Why would they grind McCann down in a dead month if they planned on using him next year? Your logic on this is terrible. So, because the white sox used a player on their roster for 10 games that means he's coming back? So I guess all the other bums that played in september will be back next year by that logic. Dont act shocked when this opinion ages really poorly.2 points

Really want to change this title so no one accidentally starts referring to benetti this way.2 points

How are the defensive coaches still here? Capra (I think) has been working with Anderson and made him worse. During the season he was having him practice acrobatic throws, jump throws, and throws from sitting down. What Anderson wasn't working on was developing a solid fundamental base. The result was a putrid defensive season. Going back to the Semien discussion, the A's actually employed a defensive guru in Washington. Look what that did for Semien's performance and development! To those that say coaches don't matter I would suggest you look up what Ron Washington has done for his teams defensively. It is also so worrying how this organization discredits analytics. We could amass all the talent in the world but until we learn how to properly develop players and coach from rookie league to MLB we will ALWAYS be behind teams like the Astros, Yankees, Rays, A's, and Twins. They will supplement their teams on a yearly basis. Cooper needs to go as well but we all know that. Honestly it wouldn't matter who they replaced him with because its a rotten system. Hearing Cole and Verlander rave about how the Astros had them change their pitching just makes me so jealous because we are stuck with this org and outdated philosophy. Our ace pitcher had to return to his HIGH SCHOOL COACH to reach his full potential. How can we compete with teams that are in 2019 when we are stuck in 1985?2 points

Girardi is in the mix. Ross has no managing experience but his DWTS time certainly gives him a "leg up" on the competition.2 points

Awesome, you posted on a public message board; if you want to have private conversations, move it to private messages. Tia.2 points

I will say the correct answer technically will be Abreu, but after him I feel it’s 90% likely Zach Wheeler is our first legit free agent and signs at the Winter Meetings.1 point

Can you imagine how scary a rotation of Cole, Kope, Gio and cease would be. My lord the stuff in that rotation would be historically good. Gio would be the soft tosser in the group lol. Maybe lopez figures it out.1 point

4.0 1.7 3.5 Those are Quintana's fWAR over the past three years. That ranks 24th in all of baseball. The fact that you think that is similar to Nova, and that you believe they'll just let him go (as do others in this thread) is truly baffling.1 point

He can walk then. He's simply not worth anything more than 14 or 15. He's not exactly JDM at the plate and the Sox would be stupid to give him that.1 point
-
Jose would be very lucky to get over 2/$30M on the open market. He wants to stay here. Paying him more than that would be very stupid.1 point

There is no way I want Nova back. Dude isn’t good and there is no upside there. I’d take Gio Gonzalez any day of the week over Nova, whom I think won’t cost that much more.1 point

You say that like it's a fact when it's not. The Cubs would get something, but not an impactful something. Front offices do care about their fanbase, but even if they didn't, the Cubs front office is ready to start reshaping their roster. I'd bet good money that Quintana does not throw another pitch for the Cubs.1 point
-
They won't get much but the trick is it's not zero. The right move would be to pick up his option, make their run at Cole, and if they're able to sign him - have already talked to teams about trading Quintana for a pittance. That way, they have the pitcher and can use him if needed, but if they land the big FA they know he's movable.1 point

Remember when Jerry was part of a collusion ring to artificially deflate player salaries then was a leading voice that led to canceling a season where his team was world series contenders just to ensure he wouldn't have to pay more money to labor. Me neither because he had the payroll befitting a major market team for a portion of his ownership.1 point

The overwhelming negativity is just awful on this board sometimes. No hard feelings either way - passion about something causes passionate conversations and positions. Nothing wrong with either opinion, I just find the narrative lazy personally but I understand why people are down in general.1 point

Listen, I love basketball. It's a lot more fun to have a decent team to watch. Satoransky and Thad young were the first signings I've liked by the bulls in a long time, coming off one of the first trades i've liked for the bulls in porter. It is great turning on a bulls game in winter and chilling out, but not when you are watching kris dunn holding the ball for 23 seconds only to shoot a 20 foot jumper off the side of the backboard.1 point

I don't understand why people let them off the hook with this stuff. THey should hope every player they actively signs performs as well as they can. Especially when they have not shown they can sign productive free agents consistently and will need to soon. The twins spent the same amount as us last offseason and got triple the production. the Rays spent less than half as much 18.5 and over doubled our production. We weren't looking to compete so we didn't spend more, but there's no reason we should be signing players that fail so often.1 point

So you do believe their payroll will be below $75M? Their committed payroll in 2020 is $15M. About $45M with arb figures. Unless you think the Sox are now one of the 2-3 lowest spenders in the game, your take doesn't make a ton of sense.1 point
-
So you expect the Sox to have a payroll south of $75M next season?1 point

I wont be. I think all of those who have these delusions that JR is going to open up the pocket books to win are going to be disappointed. It will be a bunch of role players surrounding our existing core.1 point
-
They wont wait out the offseason hoping for one of the bigger prizes. They will offer some top end FA money loaded with incentives, then will quickly move on. My guess our offseason will be quantity over quality. Brett Gardner 2 year deal Jose Abreu 4 year deal and a middle of the pack pitcher or two.1 point

I mean, they may give him the QO, but I doubt he walks. The Sox and Jose have made that pretty clear. (Not sure why I am responding to a Ron Abreu comment)1 point

I think the White Sox are going to dramatically overpay him. 2/$42 or 3/$60.1 point
-
In that regard, any chance they just make him the qualifying offer and he accepts it? Vaughan might be ready in 2021.1 point
-
Regarding those two guys it’s an either/or, not both. You can’t bring both those guys in with Abreu coming back as well. Personally, I’d be fine with Puig in RF if they can ink JDM or Castellanos.1 point
-
I was just pointing out that Moncada and JDM had basically the same OPS+ this year thus making him a current hitter of JDM's quality since that's the question you asked. I've seen posts wanting JDM and Castellanos to be added. At some point, like now, we have to value positional versatility and defense . Going forward if the goal is a World Series then JDM gets put in the OF part time and Castellanos gets benched or vice versa. I don't like that one bit. I know that wasn't your idea but with every single player we get we have to keep all those things in mind that Grandal supplies that JDM doesn't.1 point

Greg - Avi can be a good player at times and can give a team some power. But he is injury prone. Also, when he was the Sox, I never saw him take a good path to the ball. Time to move on. I think the Sox have already.1 point
-
Tony might be thinking one of my posts was your post because I wanted the Sox to resign Avi after he was non tendered and one of the smartest organizations in baseball saw value in him signed him and got that value like Tampa Bay usually does and the Sox do not.1 point

Indeed. I can almost forgive Tatis Jr because he was barely in the system but to fail to properly self scout Semien is just what. the. fuck. YOU are the club that is around him all the time and that is how badly your eval turns out? Semien has been building on this. He didn't just get good this year. The Sox fucked up badly evaluating him.1 point

They drafted him in the 6th round and developed him into an interesting asset and used him in part to acquire a pretty valuable arm.1 point
-
Yeah especially since guys are saying Grandal would mostly DH. Give me a better bat if he isn't starting behind the plate most of the time. Catcher spot is fine right now.1 point
-
When’s the last time the Sox had a hitter of JDM’s caliber? The Big Hurt? This dude is a monster at the plate and changes the entire look of the lineup. Sorry, but Grandal just doesn’t have the same effect (I know but the defense, and I don’t care because I think Grandal’s D is overrated).1 point

Wish Cooper was gone. He’s way past his prime.1 point

No I would not trade for him. If the Red Sox can't get an extension inked with him then we can't either, and that's not an indictment of our front office. Whatever dollar amount we're willing to pay...Betts's side will know that if we're willing to pay it, there will likely be other teams willing to match it, and he wants to let the market play out. That is a respectable decision. If the White Sox put an offer on the table next March, and then they faced the prospect of losing him for nothing, they might up their bid under that pressure. From the White Sox's side, we cannot afford to lose a top 5 draft pick in a trade for a guy with 1 year of control who intends to hit the free agent market. It just does not work.1 point

Was this really an awful year? Moncada, Timmy, & Giolito will combine for ~15 WAR. Eloy showed signed of becoming a dominant hitter. Bummer established himself a legit, left-handed setup man. Cease got 70+ major league innings. McCann looks like he can part of the catching mix going forward. Honestly, outside of all the injuries and Lopez regressing, there isn’t much to be that disappointed about this year. Who really cares if our record sucked because of a bunch of guys who won’t be back next year? The young core more or less took the necessary steps forward and that’s all that matters.1 point

Yet somehow we've lost LaRussa, Leyland and Francona from within the organization. Not sure exactly what the Sox culture is, beyond JR loyalism/cronyism.1 point

Joe Maddon out manages himself way too often and has run pens into the ground. I don't think I want to see Wacky Joe lineups with Zack Collins leading off or Jose Abreu playing 3B. No thanks1 point
