  1. You make about as much sense talking baseball as my 2 month old nephew. Note: my nephew doesn't talk nor know what a baseball is.... Kinda like you,

  2. “The White Sox’ deal with Robert is similar in situation to fellow Cuban Eloy Jiménez, who also signed a slightly cheaper six-year deal with two team options before ever making a major league plate appearance.” Well researched article here, considering Eloy is Dominican ?

  3. I've never understood the desire to get rid of McCann or Collins, since, you know, we don't need to.

  4. Trading 6 years of collins when mccann is a FA next year is a tatis tier move. a 2 fWAR starting catcher should yield a RP better than the scraps that were available this offseason. (see Tampa)

  5. I'm surprised (but not really) at this "the sky is falling" mentality whenever a reliever signs elsewhere. Did we not see these same exact complaints during/shortly after the winter meetings with regards to starting pitchers?

  6. I also think we are at a point of the offseason where people tend to overrate what's the presumed "top" of what's available. Once Betances was off the board, the options for what sox needed were all of a pretty similar quality.

  8. If you live in Chicago or you root for one of the two Chicago baseball teams you have seen two wildly different approaches to this winter. While the White Sox have had perhaps the best off-season of any team in the sport, the Cubs have regressed dramatically from their 84-win 2019 team that finished third in the NL Central division. ... "The Cubs are in a trick box. They did a terrible job locking up their young stars to deals that would have extended their window of contention," one executive said. "Yes, they got Rizzo and Starlin Castro but until Kyle Hendricks took a deal they had signed no one else long term from their core guys. Look across your city and see what Rick Hahn has been able to accomplish. He has a great young core and he has been able to sign some of his guys to outstanding deals. "The Cubs are trying to jump start their team again and while I don't blame them for asking for a ton in return for Bryant, I don't believe they are going to get it." Another believes the Cubs are in a terrible position as they launch a new TV network. Marquee Sports was supposed to infuse the franchise with a significant revenue stream to allow them to compete with all of the other financial behemoths in the industry. Next up on the extension list: Moncada/Giolito, Madrigal, Lopez/Kopech/Cease (surely they'll wait to see how this season plays out first)...same with Mazara and Rodon (the most unlikely). The tide is starting to shift, finally. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/why-cubs-theo-epstein-havent-161420818.html Also talks about how they're boxed in by Bryant's grievance not being settled, asking too much for Wilson Contreras/Bryant and also goes into why they can't trade Javier Baez.

  9. If Mazara was in the Sox lineup last year and hit his career average he would have been our 6th best hitter, and a huge improvement in RF. Now with Encarnacion and a rookie Robert, I'll take a .750 OPS out of the 7/8 hitter.

  10. This trade would make zero sense for either team. We trade a good closer and a reliever coming off a bad year for a closer coming off a bad year? And the Cubs send money? How does this proposed trade improve the Sox or free up any money for the Cubs this year? ?

  11. Yes sir, let's serve it up one more time, By the way, McCann was on with a base hit so it was a two run jack.

  12. Even if he did nothing else that homer to beat the Cubs is in my all-time best White Sox moments.

  13. Eloy Jimenez? 116 wRC+ and an .828 OPS may not be "lighting the world on fire", but it's quite good for a rookie

  20. For better or worse, I don’t see him signing with the Sox at this point. So I’ll be happy as long as he doesn’t go back to the Cubs. Make this offseason even worse for them.

  21. They traded Mazara due to having what, 4 left handed OFs? And yes, trading for Kluber and having been on Donaldson would seem to imply they want to contend.

  22. Yeah. This. If this is the guy that is your weakest link, your lineup is pretty darn good.

  23. Depends on your definition of good. Most might say he has shown to be average or slightly below average in his Major league career based on WAR and OPS+ . If you define good as having ton of talent that allowed you to get significant playing time starting at the age of 21 with a ML team for 4 straight years but with so so results then he is good but with the potential to be much better. The Sox have him for 2 years to see if they can make him better. At the age of 22 he had 20 HR's and 101 RBI's, In each of the 4 years he had 19 or 20 HR's. He has been very consistent but has not as yet tapped into the huge upside. He doesn't walk much and isn't regarded as a good fielder but has a strong arm. Some see him like the LH version of Avisail Garcia without Avi's speed. Lifetime Batting average .261. 79 HR's. 308 RBI , .320 OBP, .435 Slg. , .754 OPS. There are signs he is getting better, made some changes last year, put up good numbers against RH pitching .288 BA, .340 OBP .500 Slg. , .844 OPS. Isn't good against lefties. He probably has 40 HR potential if he can make more changes but you have to want to , then make fast adjustments and that isn't always easy. When Ohtani came to the Angels it took him less then one Spring training to make the changes that resulted in him becoming a better hitter. He listened and learned from his hitting coach and picked Albert Pujols brain about hitting. Mazara has been the same basic player for 4 years so if you think he is being stubborn you could be right. You could believe that he will soon realize that changes are necessary based on the change he made last year and for the betterment of his career and future salaries and that implementing those changes will unlock his upside.

  27. Yeah, and it's not like we package them together to acquire, say, Josh Hader. McCann's salary is a reward for 2019, insurance for Grandal, reassurance to keep Giolito comfortable and another tutor to work with Collins on the mental side of the game. So best to just let the season play out, inevitably there are injuries. Even in 2005, as durable as that starting staff was, we needed Brandon McCarthy to give them a breath of life those final 6 weeks.

  28. Perusing a Twins board this morning, and here they are talking about us. What a bunch of morons. “In my honest opinion i do not think the Twins need be concerned with Chicago Or Cleveland threatening their division title aspirations. Cleveland is obviously not concerned with winning and Chicago is just Chicago. True that they have added quality players. Give them an A for effort. To me they fall short on outfield defense, infield defense and starting pitching. Even though they have Keuchel and Gonzalez, they are relying too much on Giolito to not regress(unlikely), Rodon to bounce back from Tj surgery(unlikely), Lopez to improve(highly unlikely), and Cease to break out(extremely doubtful). Also, what have they done with the bullpen? not much if anything. Their players don't hustle, take extra bases, fight hard when down, and generally i feel are just not winners. Thats their top dawgs fault. Unfortunately for them neither Encarnacion nor Mazzara are defensive wizards either. Who is gonna play 2nd base? Center? Do they even have a gold glover on the roster? Philosophically we beat them like a drum since 2008...and those White Sox were more talented and better managed. Lets worry about the next step...hear me Derek? To just win the Central is not gonna do it this time.” Extremely doubtful that Dylan Cease progresses? Highly unlikely that Lopez improves? Who’s pinning their hopes on Rodon coming back strong? Ever hear of the DH- who cares about Encarnacion’s D? Have you heard of the #3 and #40 prospects in MLB? We actually let our GG go because we have someone in the wings who is better. A fan of a team that got 31 homeruns from Mitch Garver is talking gleefully about regression on other teams. The 2019 Twins got more career years from otherwise mediocre players than any team I can remember. I can’t wait to knock these smug dicks off their pedestal. Who knows- maybe they’ll win the wild card so they can continue their hilarious postseason futility, one game at a time.

  30. Yes, given all the other moves they made, I'm no longer extremely frustrated with that trade because Mazara is now the worst player on this team and in this line-up, and that's fine, given the chance he somehow figures it out. It's not like running JB Shuck out there in RF.

  32. I wouldn’t be surprised if you see Collins and a couple mid to low level prospects being shipped off for relief pitching. Since we signed Grandal, Abreu, Encarnacion and McCann there is really no spot to put him or give him enough AB’s. We also have Vaughn coming up sometime in the near future so we really don’t want to block him.

  33. JBJ is a starter on the Red Sox. He's not going to come here and want to take a backup role, and even if he did I'm not taking on a large chunk of David Price's salary to get a backup who isn't really better than Engel on defense and hasn't been much better at hitting since 2016.
    1 point
  34. Yep he wouldn't necessarily be Mazara's platoon guy but he could spell Robert and replace Jimenez in late innings Leury would still be Mazara's platoon mate . There are more righty then lefty pitchers anyway so he'd be better suited to late inningg bench piece and PH than Engel. Then after a year he gone.

  35. that makes no sense at all. both him and mazara only hit against righties, and jbj is worse at it. what is the point of JBJ at all?

  38. I have always thought that the Cubs would sign Castellanos, The Rangers are probably giving the Rickettts a run for their (unlimited) money. If that is the case, Castellanos is going to get paid beyond what he is worth....maybe 20 Million/yr for 3- 5 years with an opt out. Cubs have been silent this off-season while the sound from the South side has been deafening, so that might pressure the Ricketts to make a big splash. They have money to burn and will not be overspent.

  39. Leadership is most important in baseball due to the amount of time spent together on the road and the amount of downtime involved in the game.

  40. I mean, I don't doubt the Rockies have interest in Robert and/or Moncada. Why wouldn't they? The White Sox didn't go through this painful process just to jettison one of the premier pieces of the core right when things are getting interesting for a guy making $35M a year. its legitimately not even worth discussing.

  41. Because stat itself does not measure the talent or performance of a pitcher.

  42. "They don't fight when down." Nothing like a high school senior questioning the heart of pro baseball players. Further, wasn't one of the "strengths" (if you will) of the team last year the fact that they were never out of it no matter the score in the late innings?

  43. Twins will most likely win the division in 2020. So they can be cocky. But from 21-24, the White Sox should not only win the division but potentially be world series contenders. Let them have their opinions, but once the core is in place and we see progression (it's coming) then we can enjoy their futility
