because there's no fucking testing dude. it's that simple. christ, it's like wondering why you couldn't really measure MLB defense before any sort of objective standard. what I've read is that it's pretty hard to actually spread the disease despite the long period of being contagious. You need aerosol drops in the face. So wash hands, avoid intimate contact in public, and don't fucking touch your face. When possible, avoid crowds. If you can, work from home. Blah blah blah. We'll be good in a few months. Listen to the scientists.7 points

It is painful to inhabit a world where so many have zero care for anyone but themselves. The abuse of statistics here would be laughable if there weren't people literally dying because of this line of thinking.3 points
-
It really, really isn't. Only 37% of people got the flu vaccine? Well, that raises herd immunity, which right now is non-existent for COVID -19. Your selfishness and people in your mindset is a perfect representation of where we are as a society in the US. "Fuck you, I got mine." Boo hoo I can't watch sports or go to a concert for a few weeks. God forbid we try to save some lives for once. Social media is your straw man. Where did I say to panic? Just try to isolate ourselves for a little bit to slow it down so the men and women on frontlines of this don't need to work themselves to death to treat the sick and wounded. Also, this isnt the flu.3 points
-
Exactly. Who cares if you contract it and then pass it along to others with compromised immune systems and older folks.3 points

Half the population does not have it right now. That is not at all what has been said. The growth rate puts it at 40-70% over the next 18 months. You're literally speculating and cherry picking numbers to better your case. That's not how statistics works.3 points

The minor league season was scheduled to start on April 9th. That's also pushed back. Service time issues are interesting now. It could benefit the club with a guy like Nick Madrigal and hurt the club in Kopech's case. If they start the season around May 15th (that might be conservative at this point), Kopech should come up soon after. The year likely stays burned regardless. 1 full year of service is 172 days and this season likely won't even encompass that at this rate. They could probably start Madrigal right away and he wouldn't accrue a year under current CBA. I wonder if changes are coming somehow.3 points

As long as our president keeps saying everything is fine and we are in control of it, there are a significant number of people who will not stay home when sick yet alone quarantine themselves for a week. The irresponsibility of his comments is dangerous.3 points
-
No the people who put this together are just idiots. Everyone who is sick should be tested, I don't care if it's just a cold. If handled correctly, people panicking and running in for a test will keep people alive. You need appropriate safety equipment among the first responders. The worst that happens is you find out you have a cold and you are happy with the result. If the test takes 8-48 hours, getting the results before people reach the worst part of the symptoms will save lives.2 points

Nice strawman fallacy. The point is - Why do you suddenly feel the need to shutdown the world over this and not... something like influenza? Which spreads to all corners of the country, infects and kills so many more than this on an annual basis? This is despite the fact that we have a vaccination for the flu. WHICH ONLY 37% of Americans even bother to take annually. Old people and other vulnerable populations are ALWAYS at risk. For EVERYTHING. CONVID-19 is NOT unique in that regard. The H1N1 (Swine Flu) outbreak? Sixty million Americans infected, 300,000 hospitalized. It claimed an estimated 12,000 American lives. Did we halt the world? No. 1,600 have been hospitalized for Coronavirus in the US. 37 dead. WE HAVE HALTED THE WORLD. The difference between 2009 and 2020? Social media controls all of our information and is in our face 24 hours a day in the palm of our hands. Allowing you and the other herds of the masses to be totally sucked into this "PANIC! PANIC! PANIC!" mentality. I have two MD's in my family who are laughing at how absurd this all is. "Oh, no! Tom Hanks has it! Well, let's shutdown everything!". This is all a perfect representation of where we are at as a society. Sincerely, one day we will look back on this and hopefully learn something. This is preposterous.2 points

My lord... people need to relax. It's f'ing pneumonia. Not the black plague. Even IF you contract it (quite the slim chance) you'll be healthy in a couple of weeks unless you have pre-existing respiratory conditions.2 points

For all that Italy has had about 800 deaths out of 60 million people. That's horrible and as such needs preventative measures and mitigation, but it still amazes me that the response to that is to flat shut down society. Also, and I hate to go here, but the writer claims training only in political and moral philosophy, and with a byline as an advisor of "Protect Democracy". I just wonder about the objectivity. Again, the manifold response means there IS something to all this IMO. It just doesn't feel like I am aware of whatever gravity is out there.2 points

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/03/who-gets-hospital-bed/607807/?utm_campaign=the-atlantic&utm_source=facebook&utm_term=2020-03-11T16%3A56%3A39&utm_content=edit-promo&utm_medium=social&fbclid=IwAR3w6Sk4np78VehWV9f**CVm4XcfKnv3R1xSRvWBqOi4dMgWxgTIJYNqQwM I strongly urge you to read this article to understand why Italy going from 322 cases to 2,500 cases to 10,000 cases in two weeks broke their entire medical system to the extent that their doctors had to decide who would be left to die. If these numbers spike here in the same ways they have in Italy, the death rate will be catastropically high, because we simply will not have enough doctors / nurses / hospitals / beds / ventilators / resources to tend to the very sick before they get critical and die.2 points

This is so surreal. This virus has killed but 37 people in the US and 4700 out of 8 billion worldwide, most of those in a country where new cases have leveled off. Because of that society is literally going on haitus before our eyes. The 9-11 aftermath wasn't even like this. I am not saying the panic is or isn't warranted, because its very real. Yet at the same time doesn't make sense. Its like there is something we aren't being told.2 points
-
Tell that to the medical professionals in Italy and Wuhan. You're not worth responding to otherwise. The feds should step in to help its citizens - that's all I will say. Edit: I will add I will be supporting local business more these next few weeks. I recommend others follow if they are able.1 point

We should have had a national policy in place at least a month ago that would have mandated the closing of all K-12, Universities, professional and college sports, and events requiring large gatherings of people. It is sad that this problem was not focused on by our government until the NBA decided whether or not they would keep playing games.1 point

Right... Panic, panic, panic. There is a huge difference between advising for preventative measures (I absolutely agree with being careful) and HALTING THE WORLD. Small businesses and many of those dependent on hourly wages will be murdered by what is taking place. And it wasn't necessary.1 point

But that’s nothing compared to the flu!!! I strongly believe the only way some people in this country will ever take it seriously is when the President OR someone close to them (family/friends/loved ones) gets sick and can’t get help because of the myriad deficiencies in our current health care system. David Gergen was just talking about a case in Massachusetts where the ONLY way to get tested for coronavirus is AFTER being admitted to an ICU. How does that make any sense? I guess playing videos 24 hours per day from inside overwhelmed Italian hospitals that are doing WWII battlefield triage or the crematoriums here that were putting enough smoke from burning bodies into the atmosphere over Hubei that it was actually registering on satellite imagery might do the trick? In addition, coming into contact with Matt Gaetz, the press secretary for the Brazilian president, the Miami mayor (42 years old), all of them testing positive...then still not taking the test and continuing to shake hand after hand in the Rose Garden, not to mention sharing the microphone, it’s basically just another version of what Rudy Gobert did. This is 50% of the reason Italy is facing a catastrophic crisis now...not taking things seriously until it was too late. It’s not like we can’t see examples from other countries right in front of our eyes...all we have to do is track along with Italy, Spain, Germany and France and know we’re experiencing the same outbreaks whether there’s adequate testing or not. Finally, there’s still a patient in Omaha from the Diamond Princess who’s testing positive for the virus 28 days later!!! That’s arguably the best treatment center for infectious diseases in the entire country. And he’s not the only one, either.1 point

Because according to CDC estimates, done before society took preventative measures, 200,000 to 1.7 million could be left dead. That's why. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/13/us/coronavirus-deaths-estimate.html1 point

IMO we will be lucky to have opening day by June 1st if we don't make drastic changes soon. Since we won't have baseball for a while anyway, MLBPA should just go ahead and start negotiating the new CBA now. They can pretend to be on strike.1 point

Do you have a laptop already so you would be able to work remotely if this happens? My office being shut down until the 30th now, we have a new temp starting but we don't know when as we don't know when he/she will be able to get a laptop. And being someone who's been out of work as long as you, Jack, you absolutely need to go Monday if that is what they need. We're all pulling for you to succeed here.1 point

Great stuff. A little disappointed with some of the placements at AA and above. Are you guys sure that Flores will be starting in AA again? He has almost 30 minor starts at AA and I can’t see any logical reason to not move start him in Charlotte next year.1 point

I see what you’re saying. Maybe we just don’t know yet, as a world? Countries are struggling just to test and take care of the sick, but are they really focusing on testing the whole population? So South Korea is an interesting counterpoint to my hypothesis- testing 20,000 per day, and now over 200,000 total tested, but yet only having 7-8000 total cases. Is it possible the asymptomatic don’t carry enough load to trigger a positive? I’m just really struggling to explain how the whole San Antonio and AUSTIN metropolitan areas, containing millions and millions of people within an hour or so radius, giant international tech, recreation & convention destinations, huge international hubs....has zero cases still.1 point

Some perspective, on Thursday the US had as many confirmed cases as Italy had last Sunday. The US population is 5 times that of Italy. Will it go up 5 times the amount it did there? Hope not, but probably. Still only 11k had been tested in the US. The gutting of the CDC turned out not to be a very bright move. The lack of tests is appalling. The travel ban means nothing. It’s for show anyway. If the President has a golf course in your country, that country is exempt. The cat is out of the bag.1 point

gotta kinda laugh at the irony, at least if you're under 60. you got a bunch of dinos running, not just for prez but also in congress and worldwide, and here comes the virus! every worldwide industry affected. mount everest is officially closed and it's prime climbing season. mother nature is taking some scalps it appears. flatten the curve and hopefully we can come back wiser in 3-4 months in the US. here in seattle stores are still stocked and everything, I mean, it's not that bad and people are taking precautions.1 point

I’ve never been one to shout from the top of the hills about term limits...but I’m getting there. The flip side, of course...is no more FDR’s, either. Leadership/experience is undervalued, until you actually need it. Kind of like government in general, for most. We love to complain about it, but see what happens when it’s not there in times of crisis to rely upon, to provide a sense of comfort and reassurance.1 point

Baseball can play games with no fans in attendance for a few weeks. Players can get the virus in April, May or June anyway. Play the games with caution and see what happens.1 point

The physician for Congress and the Supreme Court said 80 to 150 million people in the US will likely get infected. If we take that low number and apply a 1% fatality rate, which I need to stress the stated fatality rate could be higher (if we go by diagnosed cases divided by death) or lower, we get 800,000 dead in the US. That would have a catastrophic butterfly effect on the healthcare system and the US as a whole.1 point

Wait a minute. We’re SO progressive now that we can’t mention death in a conversation about a virus killing people? We have hurt feelings by the unaffected while real people are actually suffering, dying and losing loved ones? Hawk would just say, “mercy”1 point

I think the elderly are going to be smart and hunker down for a while. In the US it’s not as customary for generations to live under the same house, so generally the elderly are isolated pretty well to their communities. I think with how spread out our country is, if the elderly wait it out pretty smartly for a few months or whatever, you’ll probably see the lowest death rates in the US. With all the food and resource delivery we have, I think we’ll be all right.1 point
-
Well said. I was just thinking about something. It seems backwards, but maybe our for-profit health system is our best defense as a herd. If it was the other way you’d have every sniffle at the hospital mixing with the actual virus carriers. When this is over, maybe it’s time we all write a letter to corporate America thanking them for medical and pharmaceutical greed. ?1 point
