  1. Our city opened up dog parks today but they would like the dogs to follow social distancing recommendations. i am not making this up.

  2. In the small victories column, I've made a concerted effort to take at least two walks a day of around a mile and a half each (unlike Lawrence, Kansas, we are allowed outside), and between that and making food at home, I've lost seven pounds of bad weight.

  3. The nuances of whether or not someone died of COVID really have me shaking my head. If there is a statistically significant abnormal spike in American deaths during this time, it is valid to assume it is COVID related, even if not directly. First, the lack of testing makes it all the more likely that many deaths encompassed in that abnormal spike were directly due to COVID, even if not confirmed via test or autopsy. Second, the tax that COVID has brought on the country is real. There are likely many preventable deaths due to diabetes, hypertension, depression, anxiety, etc. that were accelerated by COVID. Hospitals were at capacity, people did not want to go out due to fear, people felt hopeless and isolated, etc. It's all related whether you actually got the bug or not. The fact that we continue to lack a national plan for testing, containment, and safe reopening will continue to feed the societal fears and lead to further indirect deaths. So, whether or not any death can specifically be verified due to COVID is really immaterial to anyone who dies or loses someone important to them. To me, 80K or so deaths is probably an undercount.

  5. I will point out - while there are data gaps, I know 60K+ in additional deaths, despite social distancing, tells you that COVID is serious (and worse than a flu). What I think there are major challenges on is how much more severe (10 times worse; 100 times worse; 5 times worse). I also know that this virus seems to be a superbug where it can massively infect certain areas, so if a high risk area is all together and one person has it, it can spell absolute doom (i.e., a nursing home or say a weekly church group full of more elderly individuals). So to me, the data is clear that we need to act on this. How you act and what response is taken and how long different responses are needed, its tough to say, and I can't pretend to know the data that is driving the various decisions and what the net cost is to the different decisions.

  9. Yeah I agree. Having a good catcher is a plus but since a catcher usually can only catch for like 450 PAs his offensive impact is a bit limited and thus teams often just except bad catcher hitting, get some guys with good gloves and get offense elsewhere. Sure if you get a guy like Grandal or realmuto that is good but otherwise a good fielder with a 90 wrc+ is fine too.

  10. Its funny. We have spent years hearing about entitled millennials and how they expect everything to be given to them. Yet here we are with Boomers having meltdowns about haircuts being more important than peoples' lives. Gee where do you think the entitled millennials learned it from?

  11. I might be naive, but the way the message is delivered matters. If the message is delivered and notes that as part of our plans to open up the economy/states in a measured and safe way, we will be requiring social distancing and use of masks within all stores. This is to ensure we can safely re-open our economy and these measures will, in part, help ensure we can continue to maintain a re-opened economy. I'd also highlight the extreme benefit in wearing the mask (in a simple fashion). I think if you had a united message from the president in chief all the way to the states, you would see any protests being an extreme minority (and no matter what you do, someone is going to complain). When the message is mixed and unclear, than I think it leaves/causes more of those challenges. Obviously the science needs to support this, but I see no reason why the science wouldn't support the fact that if everyone wore masks (and if we did it sooner), we probably are much closer to wiping this thing out (earlier use of masks with a more coordinated social distancing effort).

  13. WTF? You think I am saying ignore him because of his views on the pandemic orders? I am saying ignore him because HE IS PLAYING ALL OF YOU LIKE FIDDLES. This is his act. He's getting you all riled up and is enjoying it. And it's making the thread nearly unreadable. Please, I beg all of you, put the guy on Ignore, and stop responding to him as well (those of us that are Mods/Admins can't do the Ignore feature, but we can scroll past).

  17. We meaning all the residents of Lawrence or even Douglas County, all the residents of Kansas, all Americans. And do you really think Donald Trump actually CARES about YOU? Howard Stern knows him about as well as anyone in the media does... “The oddity in all of this is the people Trump despises most, love him the most,” Stern said on his SiriusXM show, the New York Daily News reported. “The people who are voting for Trump for the most part … he wouldn’t even let them in a (expletive) hotel. He’d be disgusted by them. Go to Mar-a-Lago, see if there’s any people who look like you. I’m talking to you in the audience.” https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/05/13/covid-19-finally-pushes-howard-stern-to-turn-on-friend-trump-and-his-maga-listeners/

Hey @NorthSideSox72, remember when I said that the Wisconsin Supreme Court was obviously going to overturn the Governor's Stay at Home order because they're Republicans and you outlined all the legal details for why the governor had that authority, as though the Republicans on the Supreme Court cared about the Rule of Law? Some folks would like to laugh at you.

  20. Who is "we?" The politicians are getting paid, not furloughed. They are eating designer ice cream. Are they in it with us? Or are they interested in exerting all the power they can now that they have it? I don't know how much "they" care about society, all of em. It's all partisan. Where's the money we were promised? I didn't get my 1200 bucks yet and it should be a lot more than that per month if we "care about society." WHO says the virus may never go away. https://www.business-standard.com/article/current-affairs/coronavirus-live-updates-india-covid-19-global-cases-death-toll-economic-package-lockdown-4-usa-maharashtra-delhi-corona-latest-news-120051300100_1.html Matt McConnehey (sp) had a good video saying it's all political. We are not in it together. It's left (wear masks) vs. right (I ain't wearing a mask) and left (keep the country closed) vs. right (open it up). We're close to a civil war with all the hatred. Trump says all schools should open. Others are screaming, "over my dead body. We are closed!" Let's face it. We're close to Armageddon. Americans hate each other because politics is out of control. If COVID is here forever like WHO suggests ... wow. We better start getting along.

  21. Nice post. I'm glad you said you agree about China being an enemy. I get the feeling from PC culture that many Americans think China is OK. I'm so skeptical about China. I'm not anti America at all. I'm pro America. I would love for all of us to work together, with politicians leading the way. Problem is they do things daily to anger me beyond belief.

  22. They need to get on the field cause of all the unknowns about sports. Even the Illinois governor, who is so slow to open things up, wants baseball to be played as a TV sport with no fans. Owners need to do what it takes to play now because the future of spectator sports is certainly in jeopardy. The every day fan is not going to have the money to buy season tickets the next few seasons and will be reluctant to sit in crowds. If they wipe out the entire season it'll be easier for fans to never come back considering how expensive it is and considering how many will have no disposable income after getting laid off. Because of the risk involved, they should give the players pretty much whatever they want to get on the field in July.

  23. I'm relatively sure the sox will pick another college player unless one of the top 1-2 falls because the strength of this draft is clearly college players and a college player also fits the timeline of the sox window better. So either a college pitcher or hitter.

  25. You've been saying "we already have 50-100m people infected in the US" the whole time. It's been obviously wrong the whole time. Virologists/epidemiologists/infectious disease experts will be the first to admit that there is a lot we don't know about covid-19 yet, and that we're learning more everyday. But they understand more than you give them credit for, and they pretty universally reject the ideas you keep bringing up. Quit pretending that nobody knows anything and that your guesses are as good as the people who have been studying these things for decades.

  26. According to everyone I know who works in a hospital, this isn't true. You can be on the brink of death from a long battle with cancer but if you test positive for COVID, it's a COVID death.

  27. Trump has his boy in FL helping him out with the count. If the administration wants business as usual, they should operate the same way. The same amount of testing as the rest of us. Trump goes back to his rallies, no steps taken, and have a ball. The problem is they know if they do that, there is a decent chance Nancy Pelosi will be President in the next couple of months. If Tucker Carlson thinks working from home is crazy, he should grab his crew and go back to the office. This entire thing is about where the stock market (which is now totally disconnected from main street America) is around election day. That is what is making these people crazy.

  28. But if the fans blame the players they will go to games? To cheer on the owners and boo the players?
    1 point
  29. I'm not convinced the media would do that. In fact I'm certain they would not. And as you point out we're already working with estimates right now, we won't know the actual total for years. So how official is the official count? I believe we can learn from past pandemics and improve our responses and reporting down the road. I believe a "that's the way we've always done it" attitude can be dangerous. Technology has gotten a bit better since the Spanish Flu and other pandemics. But I've never been accused of being a conservative and wanting to keep things like they have always been.

  30. It is the counter to this. How many more people are becoming addicted to opiods or alochol or anything else during this time. How many more people are becoming more obsese or increasing chances of diabetes, etc. How much more mental illness and impacts of elevated stress for those people who have lost their jobs and or are stressing job loss. Maybe it is nothing, maybe it is "Yuuuge". I don't know, but someone should be understanding all of those dynamics and knowing what the impacts (good and bad) are to the decisions that are being made.

  34. This isn't a normal situation. I believe it requires a more detailed analysis. I've seen stats reported as "X related deaths" where X stands for the item being discussed (poverty, alcohol, flu, smoking, etc). It could also lead to more deaths being counted because it would allow doctors to place those deaths on the fence as "related" instead of presuming they should not count it as a Covid death.

  36. Thanks. I feel for you being that far away during this horrible time. They actually should put you on CNN every night as an American in China. Or do a documentary. Regarding myself: I may b**** and moan about (no haircut, no church, no sitting in a huge coffee shop with an average of 4 people in it; wearing a mask that's hard to tie and hits my glasses) but I have abided by all rules instituted by our power hungry governor. I have disobeyed no rules in all this while losing my mind slowly over this 8 week lockdown. After posting on here so many years I thought I could complain to some people here rather do it in real life. Many say I am despicable and selfish but I've actually been a good citizen. My only fault: b****ing on a message board rather than holding it inside. GO SOX!

  37. I don't buy that. You are writing here to a guy who believes China is our ENEMY. And I am not convinced this isn't all set up by China, which despises us and realizes this day and age of PC is a good time to weaken us and eventually take us over and rule the world. Caulfield is the only person who can convince me otherwise.

  42. Imagine if there was ANY type of world geopolitical problem related to the Czech Republic and Slovenia... Would reporters (or the American president of the future) then get to ask Ivanka or Melania to respond for those respective countries? What were they doing in their twenties, let alone at the age of 2? Because the CBS reporter (Weijia Jiang) Trump went after has been (I’m going to repeat it) in the US since age 2 and is an American citizen. Her parents are retired and own a Chinese restaurant in West Virginia of all places. It doesn’t get any more American that that! Getting an education and improving one’s position through the financial sacrifice of parents...that’s the true American Dream, not coming over to the US on shady modeling/socialite work visas. She believed in the power of journalism so much she even became a reporter at the age of 13! Isn’t that the type of ambition we would hope our own kids would emulate, and possibly even praise? “Jiang graduated from The College of William and Mary in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a minor in Chemistry. She also graduated from Syracuse University in 2006 with a master’s degree in broadcast journalism. In 2012, she was inducted into the prestigious Professional Gallery at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. [13]

  45. Agreed. G7 will catch it. That's just the way it is. Why wait? The purpose of life is to get a disease. To spread it to others. The purpose of life is to get a haircut (the wait at my local Sports Clips is over four hours right now and my usual place didn't open after a shooting and stabbing). That's the secret to a happy life! Getting sick! The purpose to life CAN be found in an airport bathroom, just ask around about which bathroom. I agree that's exactly where you will catch "it". Let us know how it turns out for you.

  46. i want it locked down until it's safe. My wife has asthma. If she gets this, she could die. I don't need to risk going to a restauarant and trusting everyone is healthy and everything is clean. I am no germophobe, but this thing scares me. We need a lot more testing. Potentially putting your life in someone else's hands every time you go out is pretty scary. Would a parent send their child to school with what is now out there with kids? Chances are it won't happen to them, but what if it does? I just take all the people telling me to be a warrior and go out and risk my life, aren't willing to do the same.
