  1. And sometimes guys that look like true #3/4s turn out like number 1s. This is the same convo people had about Aaron Nola. The pitcher that will pitch on the majors will not look exactly like the one that was drafted. But he has great command, a great pitch, and good feel to pitch. And he’s a lefty. That tends to overperform.

  2. Once you get the feel of that cold steel in your hands the fear goes away. Stare down those paper villains at the gun range and strut down any street in Kansas like you're Andy and Opie in Mayberry. If you start feeling scared again think about a dozen 9mm in your holster. That's better than a blue diamond to put a little lead in the old pencil. 1. So think about where you are going to store your gun when you are driving. Think, can I reach this if my car is turned over? 2. Elevators will not save you. Even if the elevators are turned off, buildings have stairs. Pro tip - think about the fire escape. Every path could be blocked. Carry extra clips. 3. "Normal" people have been owning guns in this country for hundreds of years. All those Revolutionary War heroes in our textbooks? Gun Owners. Civil War heroes? Gun Owners. Founding Fathers? Gun Owners. Charles Manson? Not a gun owner. Jeffery Dahmer? Not a gun owner. John Gacey? Not a gun owner. I think you have to redefine who you think is normal pards. 4. They already are. So stay indoors and look as white and straight as possible. Learn all the white supremacy hand signals. An orange glow is an extra nice touch if you feel threatened. And of course, vote.

  4. Surprised people down on Detmers, I’d be really happy. Among other things, we have nothing like him in system.

  5. All aces are the exception not the rule. Of course there are 100 more examples of those that took a step back compared with to those that took a step forward, that’s baseball. But Nola was a good pitcher before he was a great pitcher. Curiously don’t remember people raving how he’s likely to add velo...almost like you can’t guess. Detmers has a good set of skills to build off of. If he takes a step back he’s in trouble, welcome to every prospect.

  6. I guess teams shouldn’t left-handed college arms anymore if one as highly regarded as Carlos Rodon busted.

  7. See, I think it's the other way around. With Crochet's injury history and not much college success, if he struggles at all, it can sink fast. In general, for the Sox at 11, they would take Detmers over Crochet 10 times out of 10 because his floor is higher, safer pick, and can contribute next year if everything clicks. Everything is above average with him that can make him a good #3.

  8. Something that doesn’t work only for the rich and kill and impoverish black and brown people. We’re about to find out but I will say and tell everyone is that when people say “Defund the police” or “Abolish the police” they’re not calling to the end of law enforcement, they’re calling for an entire revamp of the system as it is currently. I’ve been telling people that we have to keep fighting but we can’t forget about the courts, judges and prosecutors.

  10. Sale was projected at #4, he fell to the Sox through luck. Crochet is projected in the back half of the first.

  11. Projecting Detmers = Nola is a lot easier comp than Crochet = Sale, even at the time of the draft.

  12. Yeah, but Nola took a jump in FB velocity in the pros that is very rare from a college pitcher. He went from averaging under 92 to averaging over 93. That's a huge difference. Nola wasn't topping out at 96 mph like he is now. He was topping out at 94 on his good days at LSU. Quit pointing to Aaron Nola. He's the exception, not the rule. Fulmer is the counter-argument. Was topping out at 98 mph in NCAA, started working every 5th day and now he averages 93 and tops out at 95. Everything took a step backward for Fulmer as a pro. That's something that you just don't anticipate, and you can't really blame the Sox for it. One of those shit happens type things. Watching Fulmer at Vandy, it was really easy to see why the Sox loved him. Watching him as a pro, it's really easy to see why he sucks.

  13. Says who? I think their floor is exactly the same, but for different reasons. Both have the floor of never making it to MLB. With Crochet if that happens it's due to injury . With Detmers if it happens it's due to just sucking. "Safe" players are not actually that safe, in fact I'd argue that those players are actually the most risky of them all. I view baseball scouting through the lens of ceiling as the most important aspect. You draft the guy with the highest ceiling, period. What I've learned about "high floor" prospects in a baseball, is that the same things that make them look "safe" are the exact things that prevent them from ever making the majors or being successful once they get there. This isn't the case with other sports, but in baseball it's all about the ceiling.

  16. Longenhagen on Detmers... Detmers' curveball is arguably the best pitch in the entire draft and he locates his fastball well enough to get away with throwing only 92 Detmers' curveball is hell's rainbow, especially for left-handed hitters who think it's headed for their lips, bail, and watch it bend into the zone. He does go on to state his concern over lack of a well developed third offering but seems more optimistic than others about his MLB path.

  17. With the pandemic starting an upward trend again and players/owners seemingly miles apart, I really wish they'd just nix this year and work on a complete overhaul of the MLB for the future season (and thus, avoiding a strike). If they can admit defeat this year and use the extra time to square out a new deal they can return in 2021 stronger than ever. Talk about league expansion and redivision, talk about minor leaguers and increasing their livelihoods, talk about free agency and the absurdity of keeping their young prospects in the minors for time, talk about mlb.com blackouts and getting their games more availability instead of making them non-available, and so many other issues that plague the sport. I don't want anything to do with a 48 game NFL like season. Get that shit out of here that's not baseball.

  18. Couple things scared me and made me think I'd need a gun: 1.) governors and mayors not stopping the looters. They could try to turn my car over and kill me if i'm in the wrong place. 2.) looters entering neighborhoods. My friend with a place in a Chicago lakefront highrise said the rioters were within yards of his building and if they wanted could have headed up the elevators. He is buying a gun this week so it made me think. 3. Abolition of police force would mean The Purge and anarchy. The fact normal people are talking about it as a serious option makes me realize they are serious and lawlessness could be here soon. 4.) the police could get pissed off and freak out at some point.

  20. The City Council does not appear to have specifics yet. At it’s heart, the dissolution is just getting out of the union contract. There will still be police, but clearly they intend to think hard about which jobs belong to police and which belong with other depts. Newark moved most of their cops to beat cops, and hired civilians as investigators among other changes and was successful. Do police as formed need to do road safety policing? Crowd control? Should domestic disputes sit elsewhere? Police responsibilities have been stretched (as have teachers) as a catch all. It’s possible to rethink that.

Nothing screams leave me the fuck alone than an F350 dually diesel. I'd lift it but if you're a bit short that might not work for you. I'm partial to the Texas edition. 25. I’ll say this for Crochet, Sale had a full solid junior year of starting and excelling. Crochet wasn’t giving that. With Detmers you are getting much more production to base stuff on.

  26. I think he's a great fit for a team like the Cubs or Cardinals, etc. Get a safer bet, someone you can slot into Opening Day 2022 rotation probably or not far from it, someone to fit in the middle of a rotation for a team trying to more like "tread water-contend" vs. "flash dominate" contend as we will be trying to do, e.g. run out a bunch of developed top prospects in pre-arb and arb stage to try to win a title for a few short years before they start getting expensive and you have to scale back to being one of those mid-level "meh"ish playoff teams for a few years. Also maybe a great fit if it's like the Royals with Brady Singer where you have a bunch of picks and you're taking a mix of floor and ceiling, and you're picking up what appears to be BPA after he's already fallen in your lap. I really would hate the pick because it feels ball-less. For the record I wanted Rodon > Guy the Marlins took who busted > lefty who busted > maybe other players > Nola. But I was concerned about Rodon also because of the Boras factor and all the arb and FA issues that could result if he works out as advertised. In general though I think it's more likely that the Crochets of the world become 10+million dollar "difference makers" than the Nola types turn into Nolas. Lance Broadway was kind of that way. Nola had better stuff but Broadway was supposed to be a solid #3/#4 who would come quick due to make up etc.

  27. More things open?? How bout millions of Americans protesting every day and night the past 10 days? Corona precautions should ALL be removed and now. We've allowed it to spread wherever it wants over the last 10 days with millions of Americans out protesting both during the day and night.

  28. Usually that comes with a velo bump. Shane bieber was like that, polished guy with great control and all of a sudden he threw 94 instead of 90 and became a star. Nola also increased his velo. I think you can only take detmers there if you believe he has more velo in the tank. If he could add 2-3 mph with stuff like weighted balls (not sure if sox pitching dev does driveline) he could be a different guy. But if he sticks at low 90s or even regresses a little which sometimes happens under the tougher pro schedule it could also just be a 5 or even long relief.

  31. Meyer is a given. That I agree with you. Kelly is falling big time on draft boards although I do like him. I just like Detmers more. Bitsko is very interesting, I just don't think it's the Sox MO (at least right now) College pitching or prep hitting is what I would target in round 1

  32. That could be true, but what I saw is that a lot of scouts don't think his curveball is going to be as devastating in pro ball as it is in NCAA. They think that it's "loopy" (meaning lots of break but not sharp break) and they're also concerned about it being a slower pitch. That said, a slow curve worked ok for Kershaw(sarcasm intended), but he threw mid-high 90s at his peak, while in the best case scenario Detmers will average around 92mph. If Detmers is a top 10-15 pick MLB is drafting pitching wrong. My understanding is that if a breaking ball has a lot of movement but it doesn't break sharply, it's a less effective pitch than one with that doesn't move as much but it does break sharply. That's what sets a pitch like Rodon's slider apart. It does both.

  33. That 3rd paragraph...so much yes. That right there in a nutshell is what they need to change in order to get this country back into baseball again. I would be STOKED if they did all of those things. And the league needs to start seriously having discussions about how to make those things happen. I disagree with the first part of your post though. I still think they should try to play this year. I just think with the improvements from so many of our young players we saw last year, I fear the worst could happen with their development. However, I agree that a 50 game season is stupid. If that is seriously the best thing the league can come up with, might as well cancel the season. I'm not even sure how interested in watching I would be. Also, they better refund me my MLB.TV, and/or make the postseason long and accessible to MLB.TV subscribers...

  34. Most scouts lean on him not making it as a defensive catcher. His next best position might be 3b or LF. Sorry, but I want someone up the middle or even has a chance in RF. Their needs to be so much development done with Soderstrom And it scares me the White Sox would be able to make him into a key asset down the road. They’ve been struggling with developing players and moving them around (Bush, Curbello, Delgado, Fisher). Yes I know Bush and Delgado are both young still, but still are miles away. I also like Hassell, PCA, and Hendricks hitting profile better than Soderstrom. I agree with Law that their needs to be some mechanical changes done to get more power in his bat. Too much work for the 11th overall pick.

  35. I want to see Reid Detmers after a year of being in an MLB strength program and after a year of being exposed to a team's pitching lab. While he does have one killer pitch in his curveball, he doesn't have elite stuff but he does have average tools across the board. When the last true pitchability guy the Sox had or developed?

  38. This changes everything. Like you say everyone now needs to have a gun and be properly trained how to use it. To go without a gun from now on seems as if you are failing to protect your family. It's irresponsible to not have a gun. At any moment your house could be leveled or at the very least invaded ... by protestors, by police, by anarchists. Time for me to research how to buy a gun and get trained. And the people that want to get rid of all police departments, which have included government officials in Minneapolis, have no right to tell me to not buy a gun. p.s. Is it ok for me to start a thread asking for advice about how to purchase a gun, best gun to get, how to register it, etc? I want to be responsible but I don't want to inflame the board.

  39. Thanks for explaining. I appreciate the knowledge. At 40 percent of all the net worth of all Americans combined I like my plan WAY better. Look, all the programs you state are fine, but America has always been about cold hard cash. Dollars. Look at sports. Look at politics. Look at EVERYTHING. African Americans want immediate action/change regarding these murders by racist cops. Reparations should be direct payments, something everybody can see and react to immediately. If it's 40 percent of all wealth, that means we survive as a country economically in handing out reparations that should end unrest. I mean if a million dollars per person doesn't prove America is serious about making amends, then we're all doomed anyway.

  40. They can't say anything. They'll be run out of office/town. Keeping the peace in the streets is not a position one is allowed to have. As far as Trump, he's going to be voted out in November so why is everybody so stressed about his photo op? There are things senators shouldn't make a comment on with everybody ready to run force them to resign.

  41. I said before I'm not "worried." I'm shocked how these videos show no concern at all. My buddy's flight to LV from KC was packed he said. Vegas is rocking, too. And Washington, D.C. has sooooo many protestors today/Saturday. Right now there are so many people in Washington, D.C. it is beyond belief, all crammed together for speeches. The government should be ashamed for making people cancel weddings and holding them to 10 people. I couldn't get a haircut for 3 months? Have you seen this rally in DC today?? The virus spread is going to be monumental, no pun intended. Our church is still allowing just 10 people per funeral. What a world. So hypocritical. Either covid is dangerous or it's not.

  42. I think Reid Detmers might be the most-realistic, best case scenario for the White Sox in the first round. He's pretty young for a junior, would move fairly quickly and offers upside while being a pretty safe bet. I wrote about him here: https://www.futuresox.com/2020/05/27/2020-draft-preview-reid-detmers-lhp/
