You should be furious at the people who have completely failed to prepare us to safely reopen schools in the fall, not the teachers who want safe environments.3 points

Yermin was like 5 years older so no he didn't go toe to toe with him in AAA. Thats like saying a college senior went toe to toe in high school AP Chemistry with an 11 year old genius taking the same class and getting the same grade.3 points

Just so everyone knows Timmy hit 2 HR's in today's intrasquad game and now has 3 since they started . Collins followed up yesterdays HR with a double single and walk. Yermin had a 2 RBI single and a diving catch in LF to rob Eloy who prompted flipped him off if that's what Fegan meant by a playfully hostile gesture in his Tweet.3 points

I'm not sure the point of education is grades and tests, ultimately. But we can set educational philosophy differences aside. Hopefully your kids make the most out of whatever mix they are offered over the coming year. Having a dedicated parent the clearly values education puts them in the best position to succeed in a tough situation. I get that it sucks and you're not getting what you planned and hoped for your kids. I'm not either. That doesn't change the reality we face. The virus doesn't care. Countless leadership failures gave us the only choices we have right now: online education or likely unsafe in person.2 points

Man, if we could get something out of Dunning this year at the major league level that would be fantastic. He’s one of my favorite prospects in the entire system and I think he was going to be a long-term rotation staple before his injuries. I really hope he can flash something this year as he’s going to be 26 in December and the clock is ticking.2 points

I don’t see what’s wrong with Cooper’s comments because they reflect nothing that isn’t public and he simply expressed concern over his well-being.2 points

It offers nothing. No grades. No tests. 20 minutes of homework a day. Minimal contact with your teacher over a zoom. Just about every kid was sleeping most of the day while this was going on. Playing video games and getting perfect scores. The classes were cheating constantly. Its a joke. Previously: Two hours or more a day of homework. Tests and quizzes validated knowledge. Teachers were interactive with students. Kids couldnt cheat wholesale because the teacher is in the room.1 point

I'm not sure the point of vindictive action against teachers. E: but we should absolutely be paying everyone to stay home if they can and can't work from home. Online education offers at least something, even if it isn't as good as in person though.1 point

1. Have you noticed how the hospitals in all the hotspots are overloaded again and reusing PPE again? 2. you are correct, nothing has been done. There is a reason why. I deal a little in disaster response science. One of the lessons there is that someone needs to make decisions at the top, even if they are wrong they are better than paralysis, because when decisions aren’t made at the top, no one else can do their job m. The US is broken at the top. There are no thought through guidelines, No answer for what to do when there is an outbreak, there are no extra funds, people haven’t been buying or manufacturing the equipment you would need to keep those buildings safe. Even if something was ordered incorrectly, at least some things might have been done right. A school district on its own can’t make these decisions, especially if they have no extra funds. When no one is in charge, it creates paralysis at every level. That is where we are right now.1 point

This is a great post when you think about it. He's right. The online option is a SHAM so he's right. Furlough everybody and it's "see you for summer school 2021." Just have the kids hang out a year and if the parents can get them to do it, make them read a book a week. If they can prove they did it, pass them the entire grade. If parents want to lie about the book a week, let them. Great post. Furlough everybody; see u in May of 2021.1 point

Well you have me sold. It's not safe. However the online education is a waste of time. So let's get the furlough notices out in August then. Maybe we can get a stimulus for the education workers impacted by this economic slowdown. You know it sucks for them however the safety of everyone overweighs the economic impacts to individuals. People are more important than money I keep hearing. So just like the small business workers and others who have had to bite the bullet I guess its just another industry decimated by the virus. I hope a vaccine comes out quickly.1 point

I'm sorry that the country as a whole was far too irresponsible and that our federal leadership was far too incompetent and incapable to get this thing to a manageable level to the point we could safely reopen schools, but that's where we are. Other countries have managed it and are able to safely hold in person schools. We failed to make that a priority and instead rushed to reopen unnecessary social activities like drinking in bars. And you're right that most of not all schools are unprepared for what's very likely to happen, which is outbreaks causing shutdowns of districts or individual schools. It sucks and it's shitty for everyone. Be very, very angry at the people in charge who have completely failed us. They put school administration in an impossible situation. With things the way they are now, growing ppe shortages and not nearly enough testing capacity to regularly test staff and students along with robust contact tracing, there isn't really a safe way to open up the schools. Many will anyway, but I'd be shocked if we made it to October without a bunch of shutdowns. What is this chart going to look like in mid August? What are we doing to stop and control the spread this time?1 point

So it's really about waiting for a vaccine. The goalposts have moved all over the place with this. Everyone fucking knew the minute this would open up a bit that cases would increase. The original reason to lockdown was to keep from overloading the hospitals and due to not having enough ppe and ventilators. Now we cant possibly open up a school because the virus is still around. And its not the teachers fault. Okay. I buy that. How about this take. If you are not going to provide proper education, then shut the schools down. You can do it until there is a vaccine. And while you do that, furlough the teachers, support staff, and building workers. just like other businesses that shutter up. This sham of online education is not acceptable. It's a glorified checklist to punt kids to the next year, its eyewash at best. Its busy work to make it seem like something is happening. Unfortunately nothing is happening. Its just bullshit. And there has been plenty of time to address this. And just pointing at the orange man and getting upset at his incompetence is not enough. Plenty of blame to go around. My wife works in a school district. There has been zero, zero talk of what happens if the schools cant open up. They are having their first call in a week to go over the concerns of the teachers. It is going to be exactly the same as the spring. That was a quick thing that occured in March. In August its not. There has been time to plan. And nothing has been done. Punting the kids to the next year while everyone waits for a vaccine is not going to work. This is not a glorified babysitting service. Its education. If that isnt happening then whats the point.1 point

So now every teacher wants online instruction. So great. They are ready to go right. A full day of zoom meetings, meaningful instruction and tests/grades. Its not going to be another semester of once a week zoom meetings and 20 minutes of busy work for homework. No pass/fail bullshit right. They have had months to figure this out. So the education system is ready to go right. I already know the answer to this. Because if the plan is more of the same whats the point. The goalposts have moved. It's now shutter the system until a vaccine comes out.1 point

They had to protect a bunch of guys and were planning a bunch more via free agency / trades. It wasn’t a decision between Mercedes & Ross Detwiler in September, it was about whether adding Mercedes preemptively might cost them the ability to protect someone like Burdi in the offseason.1 point
-
Holding a spot for Ross Detwiler or Ryan Cordell or Matt Skole in meaningless September games over a guy who has hit at every level of the minors? Yermin may turn out to be a big nothing burger, but I don't see what was gained by waiting until now to find out.1 point

Yermin has a bat that plays even if it's only once per game. Finding a position would be gravy.1 point

Honestly, who gives a shit what Coop says? None of it really matters. Kopech isn't pitching this year. If he comes back next year, that's great. If not, we move on. Nothing Cooper says changes that.1 point

Sox on 35th again with highlights and a recap. If you haven't visited there ., it's very good and easy to navigate website Just a quick few notes here. Yermin Mercedes played LF. Besides the Robert falling down HR , Collins , Mazara, Engel all went deep. Mazara, Engel and Mercedes each had 2 hits in the 5 inning game. The Robert HR was definitely the highlight of the day on Twitter. Late in the game it seems the media got bored or disinterested so it was difficult to learn much more from Tweets. Rodon looked good early . Rodon went 3 innings giving up 1 run on the Robert HR. Remember these guys are just getting work in but results don't mean too much and there are not too many rules. Rodon pitched to 5 batters in the 1st inning and they all made outs. Very encouraging work today from Rodon. Rey gave up HR's to Collins and Engel. Lambert and Cease also pitched. According to Sam Shepherd of SouthsideHitPen he looked very crisp. Sam also seems to like Yermin.1 point

As if one has anything to do with the other ? Atrocities litter the pages of history , they still do in the present . Kopech is a young man at the pinnacle of his profession. If he chooses not to pitch in a season where you have the choice not too because your employer said it's ok who are you to say he doesn't have any balls ? He isn't a canary in a coalmine.1 point

Back in the day, men would be working 12 hour shifts if the coal mines. They'd be breathing in coal dust with a smidge of oxygen. The specimen who looks like Thor can't pitch for hundreds of thousands?1 point

The Covid lunacy has doomed Paul to nothing more than a niche candidacy like his father, along with his unruly mop of hair and getting tackled by a neighbor. Teacher says school reopenings would be 'epidemiological nightmare' as thousands sign remote learning petition More than 25,000 teachers, students and parents want to continue distance learning this fall until U.S. coronavirus cases — 3 million and counting — subside for 14 days in their respective counties, according to a new petition that claims in-person school would lead to a health care disaster. The Change.org proposal was written by Harley Litzelman, a history and economics teacher at Skyline High School in Oakland. Alameda County, where Oakland is located, has more than 7,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, according to Friday data. According to Litzelman, resuming in-person classes would “glorify the endless sacrifice of American teaching,” as he explained in a June 30 article on the website Medium calling for support of the petition, which uses the hashtag #14daysnonewcases. “We refuse to return to campus this fall until our counties report no new cases of COVID-19 for at least 14 consecutive days,” reads the petition. “Let it be known that this is not simply a petition, but a statement of intent, a pledge not to return until it is safe.” https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/teacher-school-reopenings-epidemiological-nightmare-thousands-sign-remote-learning-petition-215709113.html1 point

Positive test ratio does tell you what type of shape you're in. If 20% of a specific geographic area are testing positive (as some parts of the South are) vs. 2-4% (as Illinois has for the past few weeks), that is indicative of the spread (or lack of) of the virus. Number of cases is often reported by the media and while the numbers show increases (from 20K to now over 60K) that grab headlines, that number wouldn't be as meaningful if the % of positive cases was much lower than where it is in several parts of the country. Most states have not not implemented robust contact tracing and are still lacking enough to keep up with the spread and hired enough to keep up with the early demand that resulted from the initial shelters in place. As recently as a few weeks back, Illinois was still behind, but most of the country was (and is). The CDC has issues guidelines around this prior to re-opening, and many states are still behind and/or catching up now to the demands from re-opening that were not considered. Nationwide, there needs to be at least 200K+. In order to keep up with the spread, there needs to be high % of new cases traced within 24 hours. Some of that is due to privacy concerns, etc. around the technology. NY has more contact tracing, but in many cases, aren't able to get cooperation from people. Now that the disease is spreading in many area's though, while contact tracing can be helpful for new(er) outbreaks, it's not enough to keep up with the spread. The Defense Production Act should be more widely used for more PPE . The increased cases and re-opening of the country are both conflicting and increasing the shortages that we're seeing in specific parts of the country right now. We continue to be at the mercy of other countries for our supplies without invoking more domestic production. I have no disagreement. The federal government has allowed the states to deal with their own situations (outside of the CARES act). More money will be coming if politics can be removed from the situation, but unfortunately that ship sailed a long time ago. I appreciate your post. Thoughtful and legitimate criticism.1 point
