I am included the quotes from the Cubs cuts, just because they are the most current ones, but the point is bigger. There is a metric f*ck ton of major league baseball talent being scattered to the winds across MLB because of the cost cutting due to COVID. Almost as much as I would like to see the Sox spend in free agency this winter, it would be even better to see the team spend a couple of million dollars to target the all stars of scouting and development around MLB who are now unemployed. Even if it means we don;t spent that couple of million on something like a back up catcher, bring me the guys who scouted people like Eloy and Gleyber. Expand and improve our ability to ID and sign cheap talent to later replaced talent that gets older and expensive. You want to keep a long sustained run going you need to have a source of young and cheap talent flowing into the big league club as other guys leave or start to fade.7 points

I’d say 3-5 including La Russa. They can’t talk to Hinch, Geren or Quatraro yet though. All external. Pitching coach likely internal though.5 points

He's riskier than he was but there is a big difference here in that Joc Pederson's wRC+ in his career (fuller seasons) have been 116, 128, 100, 126 and 127 until this years 88. That 88 was 20% better than Mazara's 68. Mazara's wRC+'s have been 91, 87, 95, 94 and then 68. So he was never as bad as he was this year but he was never a plus offensive player. Pederson was typically 20% better than average offensively. He is riskier, but I'd certainly put 10 mill down on that while going after Springer and Ozuna. But my priority stays on pitching, i'd put reddick in OF if it meant I could get Bauer + Odorizzi.5 points

As opposed to Cohen who would muscle into the lemon market and squeeze the kid out of it so he could take over the lemon trade for the whole city.2 points

This fuckin' guy would try and bargain with the girls selling lemonade on the corner. He'd pull up some figures on the wholesale cost of lemons or some shit before asking for a 5% discount.2 points

I don't know why but the one scene of life that I miss so much is going out to meet a friend for dinner after work and getting there before them. And just sitting at the bar with a drink. Probably because I have young kids. My fantasy is sitting at a bar by myself lol.2 points

I’ve seen this on message boards before and I really don’t understand the “it’s just a game” or “it’s just a band” or “it’s just a movie” angle. This entire board is about “just a game.” Using similar logic, anyone could respond to any opinion you post on any topic with “it’s just a game, get over it.” How does that get us anywhere? None of this is life and death.2 points

I don't recall, but as someone who is heavily invested in the broken financial system Steve Cohen is everything that is wrong with Wall Street. He paid a 1.8 billion dollar fine because he made all his money with insider tactics and dirty trading and was caught multiple times. He made 14 billion dollars by stealing from the average Joe, and the price he paid was a fine that didn't hurt him one bit. The guy should have given back every single dollar he made since his hedge fund was basically a legalized mafia group that intimidating companies and people at them. There's one story about Fairfax Insurance - a Canadian company. Stevie and his goons had thought it was the next Enron so they started shorting the shit out of the stock. When it turned out they were wrong and Fairfax wasn't underwater and going under, they paid people to intimidate employees and staff members to get them to quit and etc. Late night threatening phone calls, using media connections to smear them with fake info, all in hopes of tanking the company so they wouldn't lose money. Steve Cohen isn't a genius; he's a market manipulator who doesn't play by the rules and literally stole 15 billion dollars from people like you and me.2 points

I think this is a fair topic. I think Stroman makes sense for the following reasons: 1. This link suggests that there will be some sort of budget, which will preclude spending on top targets in FA. 2. The system still has talent, but is shallow. When you look at it, of the top 10 there will be a lot of graduations, leaving scant reserves from which to trade to improve the 26 man roster. [Seriously, it'll be Kopech, a handful of former prep SPs, and Adolfo atop the prospect lists, once Vaughn arrives here next season.] 3. This guy sucked this year. I mean, he really, really really sucked. Seriously, he sucked out loud at baseball this season. He had the worst BB/9 among SPs in MLB. In a competitive window, this team can't count on him, until he can get his shit sorted. He needs to start 2021 in Charlotte or Schaumburg, and fvkcing get his BB/9 down to a level that won't make you dry heave. 4. This guy is yet another SP who is on his way to bustville. Maybe he's a reason for Coop no longer being here, but he sucked even more than the guy in #3. 5. Over 162, this team will not even make it to the post season if it attempts to start the season with the guys under #3 in the starting rotation. Back in 2000, the SOX failed to make the postseason, due to an unreliable #5 SP. As currently comprised [Giolito-Keuchel-Dunning-Cease-Lopez], there's no prayer of making the postseason in a regular 162 game grind. Even if the SOX added Bauer, he can't pitch 3 times a week, and you'd have to hold your heaves for Cease and Lopez starts. 6. The payroll will require creativity to maintain future flexibility, when you consider that RF and a closer and an additional BP arm or two are needs, in addition to the gaping holes in the starting rotation. This is particularly important, if this team wants to retain the ability to add throughout the competitive window, and not just blow the entire payroll load in one offseason. 7. This list of FA SPs shows one or two top-end options, and then a cavalcade of geezing geezers, and other vets with their share of questions. If they propose Odorizzi having a market value of $17MM, I'd much rather have Stroman at ~half of that or less, PLUS Q at ~half of that as well. 8. He's had a strong GB rate rate over the course of his career, which could help him provide a good amount of IP, and lessen the burden on the BP over 162. TL/DR: Bauer can help in a playoff series, but he can't pitch more than once every five days. Just to be able to GET TO the playoffs, and to enable Cease re-find the strike zone, I'd rather sign 2 veteran SPs [Stroman/Q], and only have to gamble on Dunning as the #5.1 point

I’d rather not have Stroman. Just the classic White Sox “middle of the road and affordable” free agent signing that rarely works out on the southside. I really wish Bauer didn’t have baggage. (get Scherzer on a Covid-related discount)1 point

Regarding the scandal-ridden former Astros manager ... Think of this as the real world. Let's say a company that is not desperate to hire people got the resume of AJ Hinch right now. Sorry but it would be tossed in the circular file or at best the "let's wait 10 years and see what comes of this person" file. There are so many candidates out there it's absolutely wrong to hire this guy who is tied to a severe scandal in baseball. Sox will go from the loveable young-uns to the bad guys in the eyes of the baseball world. You know how many Astros got thrown at this year even with no fans in stands?? I don't understand how ANYBODY could support Jerry paying Hinch at this time in history. My choices, with the realization Oz has no chance cause of his mouth: Tony baby No. 1 (Hall of Famer). 2.) Bochy strong second (no brainer). 3. Steve Stone (don't laugh, though I'd miss him on MLB broadcasts). 4. Jim Leyland (if healthy). Just my takes. I don't want Alex Cora or AJP. AJP has no experience. But it would be a White Sox move. p.s. You know how bad that Astros scandal was? Fathom could slug a double if he knew what PITCH WAS COMING for gosh sakes. Maybe Caulfield as well!!1 point

I've had a hunch for awhile now that the White Sox have had a bunch of off of the books informal scouts in Latin America who are several of their ex Latin players. What I know about the area is that a lot of former major league players are considered akin to gods in Latin America and when an organization is seen to be treating Latin players with respect and well, that organization reaps some great rewards when it comes to these guys signing with the organization. Certainly the Sox have had terrific success with Cuban players and other Latin countries. Aparicio is still a god in Venezuela as was Minnie in Cuba. Contreras amongst the pitching prospects and a new generation of role models also.1 point

I think Vaughn can develop into the best hitter on our team. Base that on what he looks like as a prospect from games I’ve watched at the college level and games I’ve watched during his limited professional appearances. Not only does his physical strength bode well for him but even more so do his mechanics and approach. He has a massive hit tool and huge power upside. The guy is going to be special. Robert showed why he was given the praise he received and his need to make adjustments isn’t surprising.1 point

Yeah, it has been a long seven months. I didn't attend a live sporting event from March 9th until the middle of September. And even that one was running the scoreboard alone int he pressbox for a JV football game. I worked two other games this year. I haven't been to a barber since February. I haven't eaten a sitdown meal in a restaurant since early March I haven't done any out of state travel for almost exactly a year if you don't include Chicago. if you do, it since January when we saw the last Chicago showing of Hamilton the first weekend of 2020. We took our first overnight getaway from home since January last week. It took us a week to figure out, but we went to state park down state Indiana, and got a single family cabin, and spent two days hiking. We didn't even include any weekend days so that we wouldn't be around too many people hiking. We brought food and either made it ourselves, or ordered carryout for two meals. Our kids just went back to school in person on Monday, and we weren't sure we were even going to do that. We might still pull them back out for virtual if we don't feel good about it after a week or two. We haven't been indoors with either mine or my wifes parents since Feb. People are being less and less careful, so you know there is no reason for optimism. I get it for sure. Winter is going to suck.1 point

Does everyone who suggests Joc would have been better than Mazara realize how bad Joc was in 2020? Dude hit under .200. Both of them stunk in 2020 and we would have complained with either of them in the lineup. But yeah - paying $10M+ for a guy coming off a season where he hit <.200, no thank you (although i do assume he'll bounce back). Bright side is - Joc can play defense.1 point

Some of the expected deals I’ve seen for Joc blow my mind. I know I wouldn’t want the Sox going into ten million plus for him1 point

It is an unprecedented opportunity for a team who is willing to make an investment here. I am sure there are plenty who don't want to leave who could be snatched up by a team willing to take them on. It is essentially a massive free agency for front office people.1 point

A lot of analysts/baseball development people are leaving the game. They already took slight paycuts to work in the industry because it was the a "fun industry" but now that the job security was removed this year there's no reason for many to stay. They can go get better paying more secure jobs in other industry.1 point

The thing that grates at me about Hinch and company is that if he or someone else that enabled the cheating to take place, there will always be a stench about it on the present team and a wonder about are they cheating once again. I'd rather not have to have to listen to the questions being asked of these guys. It is the same crap sort of that we went through with the roid users which was much more serious and ruined baseball for me for a pretty long time. I don't know if anyone of you guys experienced the use of roids funneling down to the younger players but let me tell you that it was really scary not just with the roids and HGH but also the so-called "additives" that these sports medicine jerks were peddling to young high school kids. My youngest son who was a terrific soccer player came home one day with a huge jar of somekind of powder. Tried to hide it from me. I asked him what it was and he told me that it was to make him bigger and stronger, no less. He bought the damned thing for like $30 no less. Well, he took the thing back and got his money back. I told him that whatever he was going to do athletically was going to come naturally.1 point

I think it’ll be 60% Jose 1B and 40% Vaughn (once he arrives in late April). Other DHs. In 22, 70% Vaughn 1B and 30% Jose. Then its Vaughn’s position. By then, Eloy will be the DH.1 point

I didn't say best hitter on the team, I said best out of the 3 players referenced (the others being Robert and Jimenez). I'm sure he'll struggle early on, but he has the makeup and approach to make an impact fairly soon1 point

If JR voted that way cuz he thinks the guy’s a crook, I applaud him. So little weight is given to moral character in our society, and it leads to a lot of bad outcomes.1 point

The most important guy that the Sox will add in this off-season may in actuality be the new pitching coach. Cease has got a multi-million dollar arm but his lower half mechanically sucks. This should be pretty fixable but he needs to throw strikes with command.1 point

Yea definitely RR over TLR by a wide margin for me. RR did exactly what the Sox wanted him to do. He managed when the SOx sucked and got to manage them a year when they were good. I think the hate for him snowballed where it got to the point that he was blamed for the sinking of the Titanic. I think the players loved the guy and respected him also. He made a good pie.1 point

The longer this drags on, the less likely I feel La Russa is going to be the one to get the job. I feel like he would’ve been hired already if he was the guy. I think the rumors surrounding him were just a way to get people more accepting of Hinch’s baggage. They’re probably just stalling until the World Series is over so they can officially “interview” Hinch and make him the manager.1 point

I'd rather have a clubhouse guy who sucks on the field than an elitist with a superiority complex who's past his prime and won't accept advice from anyone.1 point

Again, there is a difference between being ignorant and being racist. TLR, like most Caucasians in the US, are not around Black people much. Thus, many people do not understand racism or that it is even a big problem because they aren't exposed to it. . This becomes two fold when the Black people you encounter are wealthy professional athletes removed from their previous situations. While I was in college, people had no idea I grew up in Englewood after living in the Projects for a while. When people see me now, most assume I've always had a great life and transfer my success to other Black people. People cannot imagine the struggle and difficulty just making it day to day. Since they don't see it, it is assumed that everyone is on equal footing and that those who are struggling in life are doing so because they don't work hard, or because they failed in life. I don't consider this to be intentional racism, but mass ignorance that needs to be addressed as a country.1 point

I still LOL at everyone who rips Dave Roberts. 3 world series appearances in 5 years as a manager. I don't care how good your roster is - doing that year in and year out is impressive. Not to mention fact he is just really good, use of statistics, ability to manage his players, etc. Like any manager, you can nit pick, but Sox couldn't have been luckier than if Roberts somehow landed on the open market. Anything is possible - but I've followed and watched Dodgers enough to know Roberts is hands down a darn good manager and would just be a stellar fit. Highly unlikely the Dodgers move another direction - especially now that his team just came back to beat the Braves after being down 3-1. But if Roberts were free - he would be by far and away my runaway pick.1 point

Why is it silly? A bunch of players conducted one of the most elaborate cheating schemes in baseball history and weren’t punished at all despite being caught. What the fuck is wrong with people holding them accountable? I think it’s silly you think we should all pretend it didn’t happen or this is some kind of “moral preening”.1 point

Uh, yes. I'm going to risk my career to stop my chemical company from polluting the Mississippi. One is literally killing people; the other is... uh... a baseball game. Same difference1 point

Farrell's not necessarily a bad thought. I might actually prefer him to TLR or Hinch. However, specific to this club, I'd rather have a former catcher as the next manager. Not so much because of the adage of "catchers make the best managers," but rather, that the SOX are about to lose a strong performer at the position. Also, there have been some questions about Grandal's performances, from the game calling angle, as well as his ability to mesh with Giolito. Lastly, we're likely to see either Collins or Yermin as a backup, and I think it could be profitable to give them every chance to succeed. I could see Bochy or Alomar as being beneficial to the SOX in this regard as manager.1 point

I don't give much public financial advice, but I realistically see Tesla with a 1 trillion dollar market cap within the next 6-8 years. I am pretty heavily invested into Tesla though. I am a firm believer in not only the social move towards renewable, but also a big believer in the battery technology and loved him moving much of the production in house. With further growth in the Chinese market, and his contracts in Germany for driverless cabs, the expansion is coming fast. Efficiencies on the production side need to increase, but I'm invested into Tesla for the battery technology - not for cars.1 point
