After seeing the Sox against the Astros and Yankees I have no idea how anyone thinks this team is capable of winning anything other than the shitty ALC.10 points
-
The Sox have been completely exposed and embarrassed in this series, and there is no guarantee that Eloy and Robert will be anywhere close to the players they were when they come back...if they come back at all. Is it time to tear things down and get a haul for Lynn and Rodon at the deadline?5 points

Ron needs to be sent down. This wasn't even a good attempt. He's just going through the troll motions now.4 points
-
They can drop off Mercedes in Nashville. That’s where Charlotte goes next.4 points
-
It’s blatant for Lynn, but Cease also has had his average spin rate drop the last 3 games compared to what he was throwing in May. So let’s be cautious about the construction of the White Sox’s house before throwing those stones.4 points

Ineptitude is one thing. This was shit effort, and they need to be lit up for it. What a garbage performance this week. Garbage.3 points

I don't want to sound like a poor loser, but the thought crossed my mind that the Astros might still be up to their chicanery. They seem to be especially good at scoring runs. They never did receive any punishment for their previous transgressions and they never seemed to exhibit much contrition. Apparently they don't use anything as obvious as beating on a trash can, but they certainly could be employing something much more sophisticated and difficult to detect. I have no proof and therefore this should not be misconstrued as an allegation. I'm just wondering. Hey, that's the price dishonest people pay for their transgressions, especially when they show little, or no remorse. Why should we believe, or trust them? Although the Astros do have the highest runs per game average in the Majors, they actually score even more, on the road. Therefore, if they are cheating, they might have devised a way to do it all of the time, not just during home games. It's not as though Major League Baseball has suddenly gotten a conscience and decided to refrain from breaking the rules. Witness the current controversy over "sticky substances". And who knows, if they are cheating, maybe they're not alone. Again, I have absolutely no evidence, however I remain suspicious. They do have a history, and you can't blame one for doubting whether they have actually been reformed. Any thoughts?2 points

We have looked like dog shit this series... even though honestly it was going to happen at some point. But would like to point out that these Astros who are crushing us. at one point Lost 6 in a row and went 1-9 in that strech2 points

Beautiful friend, the end... Jose with the lowest OPS of his career. Chw42 posted a very interesting stat yesterday. Jose vs. fastballs over 95 MPH this year: .158 BA and .237 SLG. Jose vs. fastballs over 95 MPH last year: .371 BA and .857 SLG. Jose vs. fastballs over 95 MPH in 2019: .348 BA and .623 SLG. Jose's bat just seems noticeably slower this year. He absolutely can't catch up to fastballs 95+ this year. The Sox really need his bat if they want to compete this year. It's very concerning.2 points

If the team was healthy I’d 100% agree. But are you really looking at these lineups and thinking that under performing is the issue? I think we are sending out bad lineups that are performing about as expected. There’s just no way I can logically think that sending Luery, Mendick, Mercedes, Goodwin/Lamb/Eaton out as regulars for another month + is going to “work itself out”. The question for me is whether or not the pitching staff can continue to carry the team and keep things afloat until reinforcements come…or does a move need to be made sooner rather than later2 points

I wanted 44-29 at the end of 31 games in 31 days. It’s 43-29 with one postponed. This series sucked, but with all the injuries, this was bound to happen eventually. Hopefully they get a couple good nights of sleep and then kick the Pirates around before another off day.2 points

Always exciting to have 2 of the worst umpires in the game following along in the gamethread.2 points

He's the Jose Abreu of the booth....trying to do too much when the team is struggling2 points

Getting swept is never a good thing, but I think this series will be a much needed wake up call for the organization. As awesome as our W-L record & run differential is, we’ve been fortunate to beat up some bad teams. The rotation is the real deal, but the offense without Eloy, Robert, & Madrigal is simply not that good and bullpen is going to need some help. This is still one of the best teams in baseball when healthy, but we can’t afford to be overly cocky in our current form and need to find a way to add some reinforcements come July. Hopefully they kick things in motion by optioning Yermin to AAA after the game. Feels like we’ve got to be close to that happening.2 points

How long will they have to wait to have Jimenez and Robert back though? It is going to be some time before that happens. I want to see guys like Moncada, Anderson and Abreu play better. If they need the others to be healthy to get better, it’s going to be a while before they play better.2 points

Hahn needs to get off his ass and get some help. Can’t play AL central every game.2 points

This current roster isn’t. What they need is Eloy, Robert, Kopech and a lefty slugger added to the roster.2 points

What do you consider something of consequence? They don't have what it takes to get like a Ketel Marte. They don't need that though. I'm not even sure they could get Joey Gallo. They can absolutely get Starling Marte, Eduardo Escobar and either Ian Kennedy or Daniel Hudson though. Those would be impactful moves2 points

It should be clear to pretty anyone that the offense is starting to show its cracks as we start to face better teams. Over our last nine games against legit playoff contending teams (Blue Jays, Rays, & Astros), we have averaged a measly 3.56 runs per game. If you exclude the Blue Jays series when we still had Madrigal, our runs per game drops to 3.17. Either way, our recent offensive production has been bottom of baseball bad. Obviously the hope is Eloy & Robert come back and solve two of our major holes. The problem is there are a lot of games to be played between now and August and we’re only 3.5 games up on the Tribe. Trades will likely happen, but even there it could be four or five weeks before we see any real action. In the interim, the Sox would be smart to make some internal changes and try to optimize the offense as best as they can with what they have. Here are my handful of ideas: Option Yermin to Charlotte. Since May 18th (the day after the infamous 3-0 homer), Mercedes has put up a .144/.215/.186/.401 slash line or 17 wRC+. To say he’s been bad would be an understatement, but yet he continues to bat 5th most nights. His bat is killing tons of opportunities for us with most of our best hitters batting in front of him and he’s been providing zero protection for Jose, who has fallen off during this time-frame (128 wRC+ before May 18th( a 95 since then). For now, Yermin can’t be a part of this offense and he needs to find himself in AAA. Start Collins regularly against RHP. I don’t care if it’s at catcher or DH, but he & Grandal need to be in the lineup every time a righty on the mound. Zack now has a 109 wRC+ against RHP and has looked much better at the plate as of late. For a lineup in desperate need of power from the left-side, we can no longer afford to have Zack be limited to a backup catcher role. Him & Grandal both need to be in the lineup against RHP, even if that means we risk losing the DH for a game in the event of injury. Call up Jake Burger to DH against LHP. Overall we still remain one of the best teams against lefties, but it’s very clear we’re trending in the wrong direction in that department. Just in the last two weeks we’ve had Valdez hold us to two earned runs over 7, McClanahan hold us to two over 5, Skubal hold us to three over 6, Ryu hold us to three over 6, & Ray hold us to one over 6.1. I get that some of these guys are pretty good pitchers, but we haven’t a big offensive game against a lefty in some time. That’s where Jake can help. As pointed out by @fathom, Burger has a ridiculous 1.362 OPS against lefties this year. I get he’d be an untested rookie, but I think he’d be a big upgrade over what we’re currently getting against LHP and would add some much needed power to the lineup. Plus he can fill at 3B when Yoan needs a breather here or there. Play Vaughn Everyday in LF. This one is going to be a bit counter-intuitive, but we need see what we got in the kid and figure out if he can work through his challenges against RHP. He has been far & away our worst hitter against righties, posting a .487 OPS and 38 wRC+ on the season. Right-handed pitchers are pummeling him down & away with sliders and he has yet to make the necessary adjustments. This is not uncommon for young hitters, as we saw Eloy & Robert also chase too many sliders when they first came up, but Andrew will likely need consistent at-bats to figure his shit out. Bat him near the bottom of the lineup against RHP for now and see how he responds. He’s way too talented & smart of a hitter to force into a quasi platoon role and we definitely need him to take a big step forward in order to avoid having a third major hole in the lineup heading into the trade deadline. What do you guys think of these ideas? What would you differently?1 point

i dont see 'troll' in that stat, its worrisome because you dont just lose it after a year like that. Is he hurt? I doubt he would tell the staff.1 point

Yermin shouldn't DH against a righty. Maybe you throw him in there against a soft tossing lefty, but he's totally unable to handle ML pitching right now. If you have to, send him down to AAA to figure it out, cause having him hit .150 in the majors isn't helping anyone. Lamb should DH vs. righties as much as possible, but stop putting him in the 2 spot. He's a total liability on defense and really shouldn't be put in OF, especially if you plan on playing Goodwin in CF. The combination of Goodwin, Vaughn, and Lamb might be the worst defensive OF in baseball. Play Engel as much as possible. We need him to anchor the defense in CF and he's hitting well enough against RHP that he shouldn't strictly be a platoon player. Especially when your other options in CF are Goodwin and Leury. Against RHP, I'd go Lamb at DH, Goodwin in LF, Engel in CF, and Leury in RF. You can even give Collins ABs at DH and have Lamb in LF if we don't have a fly ball heavy starter on the mound. Against LHP, Vaughn needs to be in the top 5 of the lineup. I don't care if it's 2, 3, or even 5, he belongs in there against lefties. He's one of our only guys who's had success against high velocity this year.1 point

We have been due for this stretch for a while now. What kind of team this is will answer how long it takes this group to wake up.1 point

Thank you. There’s actually a lot of perspective to be gained from taking a step back from the ledge (including what you posted): - every championship team has bad losing streaks at some point in the season. - we are down three starters, Moncada doesn’t feel right, and we have zero depth. - while it sucks to lose 4 in a row to a playoff bound team, we were on the road and they are a good team. I would rather lose 4 in a row on the road to a good team than get swept in Detroit or KC like the Sox do some seasons they are contenders. - we identified a lot of fundamental weaknesses by having this happen in June, well before the trade deadline, when we can add.1 point

I think this post make a lot of sense. Looking back at 2005, the Sox had losing records against the Red Sox and the Angels, and the season was clearly over when the Angels swept the Sox in Chicago in September. Would have saved the time of a championship parade, expensive World Series tickets, etc.1 point

Beckham would require a 40 man roster spot and would also have to serve a suspension. I think Burger is coming up and soon. Scot Gregor tweeted today that he thinks Jake will be up in the next two weeks. I’m sure that’s mostly speculation, but it seems like we’re nearing the end of the Yermin experiment (for now) and Burger & Sheets are the only two options to fill the spot.1 point

1. I don’t really want to get on the scale right now. I had to cancel my gym membership with my wife because we couldn’t feel safe working out while she was pregnant with our son or when he was at home, afraid that we would bring something home. I want to rejoin a gym again because my muscle tone suffered. But I have been running even though I have ran less than normal because of work projects I am trying to use to get promoted and get overtime. I also have more responsibility with my son now so I can’t work out as much as I would like. I might get some weights to use when I don’t have the time to go out for a run, even if it is just some 25-45 lbs dumbbells. We will see. 2. Mentally, I’m better than I had been. I still work in a job that I find to be meh but I have had to carry the insurance for this year. At least I can leave my employer after this year if I don’t get promoted since she will carry the insurance. While I do get nervous about what I will do if a data analyst position doesn’t work out, I am glad that I could try other jobs and that I have about 40 years worth of work left to go back to school (maybe for health care) since I’m only 33. My mental health had been impacted by feeling like I could have done more academically and focused more on practical careers and that life had passed me by, but I know that there’s still time and that things are still possible even with a mortgage and a kid. Some counseling sessions really helped that before the pandemic hit too. 3. Financially, pretty good considering we cut the gym expense, I don’t take a bus and train to an office anymore and my wife has been off of work taking care of our son. We also haven’t had tuition expenses for her grad program she is using to get a masters so she can get a raise as a teacher. We will be in even better shape when she goes back to work, even with the cost of daycare. Good thing we will get Biden’s child tax credit each month since we are middle class earners.1 point

if Abreu had been trending down vs the fastball over the last few seasons I would say you were onto something it's much more likely that he's playing with some sort of mild injury, likely an oblique or something vs he just can't hit fastballs anymore1 point

Good Lord, this series has been a fucking nightmare. The only successful hitter has been my head against the wall. Christ. Get a fucking grip. This is embarrassing1 point
