  1. Is Engel still on the back to back game pre-caution? Or is La Russa playing matchups? Seen enough of the Alejandro De AzGoodwin in CF adventure.

  2. I don’t agree, but more importantly what is it with your constant use of this weird phrase, old sport? Are you posting from inside an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel?

  3. After a couple misplayed flyballs perhaps.

  5. Well yeah I think his .500 batting average is unsustainable

  6. This is why you need affluent sportsmen committed to help fortify the team with vetted difference makers. We don't have that on the Southside of Chicago.

  7. Our best hitter, the #8 guy in the order.

  8. This offense is looking like the end of last year. Can't win a WS hitting like this. We have enough time to figure things out but looking bad against our division isn't a good sign.

  9. Collins sucks, Zavala at least provides better defense and calling a game.

  14. I don't think anyone is hating on Goodwin when they say he's a poor defender. That is just the facts.

  15. Hopefully you've got your good stuff tonight Lucas. 20 Ks should suffice with that OF defense.

  17. I'm not sure what is meant by sportsmen in the context it has been used here. IMO,,,,sportsmanship is more than trying to win every year by throwing money at player payroll. IMO sportsmanship involves respect for your teammates, your opponents, your fans, and your city. It is about playing to ones potential within the rules and then knowing how to win grace and how to lose with dignity.

  18. So uh how bout that Luis Robert guy?

  19. You're right but not many guys have turned 20 mil into 3-4 billion just from owning sports teams. For better or worse (definitely worse) Jerry might be THE key figure in the total commodification of sports

  20. This bumslayer thing has always been a dumb narrative. This isn‘t college football where Alabama beats some directional school by 50. Baseball is a game with a huge amount of variance. The Royals are not a good offensive team, but they are less than one run worse the Red Sox per game.

  21. The problem with Jerry is that while he may be able to turn tuppence into a Crown, he possesses neither the stick-to-itiveness, gumption, nor derring-do to be considered a sportsman -- or dare I say gentleman -- of even the meagerest order! To to the contrary, I've found his manner in polite company to be boorish, churlish and quite irregular. Now fetch my carriage lest I become unduly exercised.

  22. Yea but the most of them talk about other things. It's all you talk about, how Jerry ruins everything for you. Like here, in a Luis Robert rehab thread, talking about JR being an affluent sportsman ffs

  23. Haven't we seen this movie before? I mean, isn't Cease a bit of a bumslayer? And isn't he a bit shit against the good teams? Sure, he looked good. But grade on a curve: he wasn't exactly facing the best in the business.

  24. The Dodgers won their first championship in 32 years. Magic Johnson and his group are not sportsmen. They must sell. The only true sportsmen in MLB are the Steinbrenners, although they seem to be off their game recently, the owners of the Red Sox, Giants, although both have been Reinsdorfing it in recent years. I do think JR needs to sell. The game has passed him by in more ways than one, but a sportsman wants to win, and I will never ever think JR didn't care about winning. He may have gone about it incorrectly. Hired the wrong people, signed the wrong players, used the wrong logic, but winning was important.

  31. I've been saying for a month or more that there will be at least a 4 man rotation and there is always a chance that there would be a need for the fifth guy too and yes Kopech may not be able to start a game . He isn't close now. That was just some peoples fantasy rotation should Rodon go down or the replacement of Cease . Just because Kopech has been good in short bursts does not mean he would automatically be a better starter than Cease. Cease is still on his development path and while we hope Kopech's path is shorter, most starting pitcher's take around 90 starts before you start to get comfortable according to John Smoltz. The odds of Kopech starting and becoming a better starter than Cease are slim in the near future. Predicting the future personnel based on present personnel is probably not a good idea.

  32. Forget the Guardians. The Indians are w/o their manager and were sellers not buyers at the deadline. We should be focused on the Astros as Boston/ Tampa will get beat up by Yankees, Jays and each other.

  33. I questioned the playoff rotation here last week and was told Cease and Dallas will go to the bullpen. I don't get that. If we go deep in the playoffs we will need 4 starters. I doubt Kopech will be stretched out enough to give more than 3 innings. Give Dylan a shot if he looks good down the stretch.

  34. I keep seeing people post about Cease not being in the rotation in the playoff , but I'd like to see how he looks down the stretch. His stuff can be overpowering. His fastball was blazing tonight but, KC wasn't swinging at the slider . He kept it down and away and he got maybe one swing for a K on it but overall I think it just lacked depth. That knuckle curve, now that's an out pitch liked he showed in the 6th. He probably doesn't throw them much early on because he doesn't want to hang one and the fastball slider combo is smarter if you can get them to chase the slider which wasn't happening. I wonder if he has experimented with a cutter or sinker or change up.If he could throw the fastball consistently as sinkers and cutters at slightly less MPH like around 94/95 he'd throw off the timing of hitters even throwing it in the zone and he could be dominant without the high pitch count. He is so close to being the #1 starter on the staff.

  35. I think the fact that he looked his best in the 6th by throwing just 1 fastball speaks to how good his stuff really is. If he figures out his fastball control, he's gonna look like Gerrit Cole out there.

  37. It is an overpay - but the way I see it - in the NBA - when you give a 3 year deal - you really are giving a 2 year deal - because the final year is always valuable as an expiring that can be leveraged to facilitate deals. The money was definitely too much - but I don't see the Bulls doing anything other than operate as an over the cap team the next few years and their blue print is to leverage existing pieces and potential picks to go get stars (presuming this pans out and they are a good team). So given the term the money probably isn't a huge deal (and if anything maybe paying a bit more here is purposeful because they figure Derozan is one of the pieces they will move in 1-2 years along with other younger chips (or picks) to parlay into a S&T (and/or mid-season move for a better, ideally star player). In a year - even without cap space - if there is a star player who wants to come to join the Bulls - they will be able to operate, just like they did this year as an over the cap team, and orchestrate FA sign and trades for whatever star (if one is there) who wants to join the Bulls. I think the part people are downplaying is how Derozan the facilitator will help the bench unit out - because at this point you can run a variety of units and really shift the makeup of the team. I feel like Donovan will have a lot of options and defenses will have to really play defense against this offense (after years of basically Lavine and a bunch of chuckers).

  41. Can you give an example of an "affluent sportsmen", because I believe I speak for a lot of us that we don't know how you are using this term. Are the hedge fund owners of the Dodgers and Mets affluent sportsmen? The Steinbrenner Family? Mark Cuban? The fleabag Rickett Family? Any other affluent sportsmen in MLB ownership suites? All signs point to the Reinsdorf children taking over when Jerry steps down or passes. If the Reinsdorf children take up fox hunting, sailing, or equestrian sports like showjumping, steeplechase or polo, would they become affluent sportsmen/women, and would that improve White Sox fortunes? Can we expect Grey Poupon at concession stands?

  43. even if you hate him you have to say hes a HOF, a well known HR call, lots of catch phrases, everyone knew of him and had an opinion for decades. Thats HOF worthy in and of itself.

  44. Yeah, I wish you (and more importantly, MLB) wouldn't spread these sorts of videos around. I mean, Americans are already renowned for doing stupid shit. And encouraging Americans to do stupid shit means that they WILL do stupid shit. I get that its great that the catch was made in THIS case, but it'll be fookin tragic if/when the next hard-hit ball is missed by whomever is holding an infant. YMMV. All of us that watched that season KNEW that they had to back up the truck, and sell, sell, sell well before this moronic trade was even a rumor. That this org was so stoopud to believe that that roster, with that manager only needed James Shields to magically compete proves that stupidity is a disease. Its 5 years on, and I'm still enraged by it. I think I got banned (again) from WSI when it happened.

  45. While the Sox should never live down this trade, Preller should definitely lead off with "provide other teams with questionable and/or false medical data"
