Let me get this straight. We're thinking of spending 16 million for Kimbrall, and thinking about not offering Rodon 18.4 million. If it happens this way, every one in the FO should be fired.5 points

See, I don't always disagree with James: I agree 100% with this. Syndergaard and Verlander were extended QO's and they have a ton of risk as well. I believe Ed Rod was extended a QO as well. That's how the big boys operate. Good teams don't let potentially good players walk for free. Edit: Disclaimer if Carlos has off-season surgery of some kind this would make a lot more sense.4 points

Man you’re starting to get worse than Parkman with all the unfettered pessimism.3 points

Yes I think they're going to try to sign Scherzer. You make an excellent point.3 points

I expect Keuchel to bounce back pretty well next year, and the Sox will lose their ass if they try and dump him for a bag of balls. I don't think anyone in their right mind thinks Keuchel is 'done', do they? If they do try trading him, they're gonna have to pick up a chunk of that salary regardless unless it's swapping contracts I roll the dice with him locked in at 53 points

From my perspective, there are three options for why the Sox didn’t extend a QO to Rodon: The Sox are concerned about his medicals and ability to stay healthy next year The Sox have other pitching targets they like better and would rather invest in The budget is going to be limited and they need to spread that $18.4M around The first two would be very acceptable reasons to pass on a QO, whereas option three would be highly problematic for obvious reasons. Let me clear, if the Sox go into the season with Kopech & Keuchel as their #4 & #5 starters, then Jerry & the front office should be roasted for passing on the QO here. The Sox have to add another high-end starter to the mix, even if that means dumping Dallas at 50 cents on the dollar or forcing him into a long relief role to start the year. For now, I will give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it’s some combo of options 1 & 2 that drove the decision here.2 points

Jerry Reinsdorf has always been afraid of guaranteeing big money to pitchers because they break down so easily. I really don't know why some people are surprised here. This was a no brainer that they would not offer him a QO. And while I've often gotten on JR for being cheap, and I may do so again this winter - I wouldn't assume that not offering Rodon a QO means they wont spend elsewhere. He just doesn't want to hand 18 mil to a pitcher who never puts a full season together and ended this season with arm problems of some sort.2 points

I agree. I’m not going to make rash judgements on a situation we don’t know all the details on. Want to let this play out, see what happens. But…if they make a few minor adjustments, I’ll be disappointed. They need to make a few key moves, not just band-aids. Act like you want to win a World Series and not just win a shitty division.2 points

Considering how bad the Sox have been at drafting outside of the early first round, give up the pick.2 points

Did Avi like his time in Chicago? I love that guy and he's still only 30. Would love to see him come bak. At the same time Sox may need to throw Sheets and Vaughn out there in RF. They are good players. ... Is Eloy married to left? Would he ever go to RF like Dye and play there?2 points

That will be the argument used against you....that you can't count on or rely upon it again in 2022. But there you have at least three organizations in Houston, New York and Boston who aren't afraid to put their money where their mouth is...there's no way you can argue that any of those guys are significantly less risky (and some, moreso) than Carlos Rodon. And part of it's also the the psychological side of things, the message it sends to your fan base...that we don't believe in our own homegrown player more than say, Craig Kimbrel, who was an absolute train-wreck with the White Sox and had very little if nothing to do with their 2021 playoff appearance. If there are DEFINITELY teams out there willing to spend that $18.4 million (and the Dodgers would be another, Giants letting DeSclafini and Alex Wood go have money to spend, along with Posey retirement)...there's not at least 6-8 teams out there that would be interested in Rodon? As it stands now, the only 50% convincing argument I've seen for Kimbrel is matching up with the Phillies, but there aren't many more teams, and the Phillies got by well enough at the back end going cheap/er, they just need to improve their 6th-8th inning guys and can spend a lot less than $16 million to accomplish that.1 point

1. You need more than 5 starting pitchers. The sox have no minor league depth. 2. How is a rotation with two complete question marks at 4-5 a good thing? Kopech isn't gonna throw more innings than Carlos did this year and keuchel is absolutely terrible.1 point
-
That the Sox are close to their ceiling and are hoping to free up some Kimbrel money to go dumpster diving to fill some holes. Still think Carlos had more trade value than Kimbrel but think you have to hold for a certain amount if time if a guy signs a QO so they couldn't trade him and free up money to spend on a 2b and of'er at the dollar store in time.1 point
-
no room for a starter, that's why Carlos is gone. Keuchel and Kopech super duper reliable and great. The fact that this messaging/narrative is already being pushed by the organizational PR team isn't great news.1 point

This is where I am too. The announcement stung a little as I love Rodon, but I understand it too. I’m choosing to be rational until I see how things play out.1 point

I just like listening to him speak… his voice is so soothing and is more effective than high blood pressure medication.1 point

I don’t get the decision not to extend the QO to Rodon. It’s a bad sign for the off-season, it shows us that Jerry still isn’t willing to spend like an owner of a major market team. The only acceptable answer is that they think Rodon is physically toast and don’t want to risk wasting $18M on someone who’s at the end of their rope physically. With Kopech going back into the rotation, pitching is now the biggest need alongside 2B in my opinion. They need to find guy who can eat innings, and quality innings at that. Delfascanti is a dude I like for the Sox.1 point

If you really think about it, isn’t it a coincidence that this story is out there and it corresponds with them not offering Rodon the QO today? Just saying.1 point

Yet, should be trusted to keep Rodon healthy when it's pretty much never happened.1 point

The only way that the Rodon QO decision wasn't the dumbest decision the White Sox FO has made in years is if Rodon needs offseason surgery.1 point
-
While I think Rodon is worth the risk on a QO, I’m going to trust the FO in regards to their knowledge of his health. Hahn’s comments the other day really makes this no surprise. We all have to hope they have those dollars earmarked for a FA starter with a better track record of health.1 point

In a weird way, if the Sox were going to break their seal in a record setting pitcher contract, I feel like it will be for someone old as hell.1 point

Yeah, which wouldn't be surprising and wouldn't be something the sox would offer imo.1 point

The real offseason won't legitimately start until Kimbrel is off the books...so we might be in for a long wait, especially if Conforto accepts the QO from NYM.1 point
-
There is a very real chance the Sox have a bad offseason. Could very easily see it happening. But the early “moves” thus far really don’t tell us anything. I really think it has to do with social media in general. The longer it stays around, the dumber and more impatient we get. Every small piece of news is the biggest thing ever.1 point
-
Worst case for Rodon is a lot worse than what you suggested. Also people really need to stop believing they have any intention of keeping Kimbrel. Even Bob N. said they would deal him, and he’s the unofficial Sox spokesman.1 point
-
Like I’ve said before, I’m very torn on Rodon in general so I’m very meh at this news. I’m just going to sit back and see how the off-season plays out and then when I hate it like usual, I’ll get pissed at that point.1 point

He acquired two All-Stars last offseason and you could argue a third with Rodon. Grandal was a great addition no matter how much you hate him and he was on the money with trying to get Wheeler (and made the largest offer). What moves are you upset about? I get Keuchel sucked this year and may be cooked, but he did give us a sub 2.00 ERA last year. And sure, go ahead and rip the Kimbrel move, but it was an aggressive go it for now trade deadline deal. He’s had some misses, but greatly overstating how bad he’s been the last couple years.1 point

I hate Aaron Rodgers. Over a decade of countless instances of pain inflicted upon me from that man. In this instance, I will say, good for him. The reaction to this is so far out of the realm of reason. It's sad to see. That's all I have to say on the matter.1 point
-
To me, the answer is simple. Rodon gets a QO if his late season injury was just fatigue. If it was a legit shoulder concern, thanks for 2021 you were outstanding, but if you want to come back, getting really rich will require hitting on incentives.1 point
-
I can’t see giving Rodon more than a two-year deal, even if you like him. I could imagine some team caves and goes three years to be the winner. QO will def drive down the AAV if he goes elsewhere1 point
