  1. At least they didn't get roped along all off-season only to get Manny Machado's friends and relatives. It could be a lot worse.

  3. Yeah... when hahn calls an agent about a player now they'll be like..., wohhhhhhh, I didn't see this coming. I thought Rick was out and happy with his team, I better lower the price for him because he's not interested.

  5. Somewhat funny story about Shields' second year with the Sox: Before the season, I was claiming that Shields wasn't as bad as his 2017 made him seem. I made a friendly wager with a buddy of mine (for a case of beer) that he would have an ERA under 4.55 in 2018. I still don't know why I picked 4.55, but my buddy gladly took the bet. It came down to the very last inning of his last start and I needed him to complete the inning with no runs. Inning starts with a walk and a single, so it's first and third with nobody out. Next guy lines out to third. Guy after that flies out shallow to right (no tag). Then Lindor comes up and Shields goes to a full count. The entire stupid bet came down to 1 pitch, and he struck Lindor out to finish the inning. 4.53 ERA, and the beer tasted great. I know, I know...cool story, bro.

  6. Letting Bryant, Baez, Schwarber and Rizzo all walk then signing Correa to a monster deal makes absolutely no sense.

  9. At this point this team on paper is worse than the team on paper we had going into last year. They better make moves.

  10. I'm not angry the Sox didn't re-sign Carlos, although I fully expect him to be completely dominant in San Fran who maximizes pitchers better than maybe any organization in the game right now. If Carlos stays healthy and throws 180 innings, he finishes top 3 in the NL Cy Young race. I'm angry that the Sox didn't realize that Carlos Rodon was clearly worth more than 1 year 18 million and would NOT accept a QO under any circumstances. It's just inexcusable to be that out of touch with how the rest of the league values players.

  11. Best part of the lockout was not having to hear these type of rick hahn quotes.

  12. You might be able to get prime Damaso Marte for those guys.

  13. Not a big fan of "we lost a trade a decade ago, so we should be cowards during our actual window" as a team philosophy.

  14. It’s been like 36 hours since the offseason reopened and no one relevant to us has been acquired by other teams. Some of you guys are acting like little babies right now. Trust me, I’ll be the angriest person on this board if they do nothing of importance, but I’ll actually wait a week before declaring Hahn has failed us.

  15. Give. It. Up. .45 era and the peripherals to back it up. We get it you are so much smarter than everyone else...but posting 15 times about it each day is literal message board cancer.

  16. I gotta admit, it's gotta be aggravating to think you're signing Correa, but you actually end up with Simmons.

  18. Even with the FA/Trade replacement, they should have offered him a QO. He was NEVER accepting a QO for so many reasons. The CBA, even if a disaster, was going to be some kind of improvement for players, so salaries would be slightly better. Rodon was a lefty starter with elite stuff who dominated baseball for 2+ months. Someone was going to gamble on that. No matter what they do the rest of the way, the QO was a no brainer. It was a FREE first round pick. The Sox just don't know what MLB guys are worth, which is why they sell the farm for bums like Kimbrel.

  19. This Link spells out one reason why I favor Suzuki. Here's a comp from that link: Seiya Suzuki's career NPB numbers (age 27): .316/.415/.572; .987 OPS, 170 wRC+. Hideki Matsui career NPB numbers (age 29): .304/.413/.582; .996 OPS, 168 wRC+. Pretty similar, right? Except two things: Suzuki's only 27, and unlike Godzilla, Suzuki is a Gold Glover. Matsui's lack of a glove was his Achilles heel. What would Matsui be worth if he could actually field?

  21. Hahn meeting with the media soon. Can’t wait to overreact about him saying his team is on the field.

  22. Is that what I said? Like I tell Jack all the time, take a breather from Soxtalk and go rub one out if discussing a White Sox team coming off two playoff appearances for the first time in like forever is so painstaking for you. You’re garbage posting right now and having to read nonstop bitching & whining is pretty annoying when nothing has happened.

  23. Colas and Cespedes have no bearing on this years team.
    3 points
  24. You're right. This team doesn't have any holes besides the glaring one at 2B, the giant one in RF, another reliever, and possibly another SP. Other than that, yeah no holes.

  25. You absolutely cannot make decisions for this year’s roster with Colas and Cespedes in mind.

  27. This is a pretty great signing by the Giants. Sure, there’s risk, but SF prints money with that ballpark and it is max 2 years. The upside is a top 5 Cy Young guy. I certainly would rather pay Carlos 22 mil than give 16 to Kimbrel, but that’s me.

  28. It's really really difficult to justify picking up Craig Kimbrel's option for 16 million but not offering Rodon 1 year at 18 million. Rodon will very likely, even with injury risk, cover more innings than Kimbrel in 2022. Kimbrel would not get an offer anywhere near the offer Rodon got in FA. This to me is a process issue. I can respect not wanting to come into the season with the risk of Rodon's health given that Keuchel is bad and Kopech can only throw about 120-140 innings. I completely understand the thought process there. It's just difficult to swallow the Kimbrel and Rodon decision when put side by side, and accounting for the draft pick compensation. It just shows very poor valuation skills by the FO who is, sadly, kind of notorious for that.

  29. And this is where I say screw you Hahn. Kick ass Rodon but Hahn was an idiot for not giving the qualifying offer (and yes I was adamant about it at the time).

  32. Carlos is seriously one of the biggest wild cards in baseball next year. I can’t understand getting that angry over him right now.
    3 points
  33. We really decided to pick up Kimbrel's option of $16 million but were too scared to give Rodon a QO worth $18 million. If we don't end up trading Kimbrel for something noteworthy, that'd be a major fail.

  34. it's honestly laughable that they didn't want him back for 1/18. Said it then and say it again. This team isn't willing to do what it takes to play with the big boys and their understanding of MLB players values is still piss poor.

  35. Not extending the QO seems even dumber now

  36. I know this is typical Hahn speak, but that first line is pretty laughable after being swatted like a gnat in the Division series last fall. They best address their holes because that team was not capable of winning a championship.

  40. I hate the San Diego Padres to this day for sending us obviously damaged goods and getting away with it.

  41. I mean this is how Hahn talks to the media. He's done the same thing for over 10 years now. Not sure why people react with anything but a shrug. He could be working on spending 200 million or 2 million in FA and he'd say the same shit.
    3 points
  42. I mean, he can't seriously expect the fans to be like, "Okay, we're cool, too with the current roster." Huge hole in RF, smaller but still substantial hole at 2B, and a glaring need for another starter. Not to mention more bullpen help. I get it. He can't say, "We have deals in the works and expect the team to look differently soon." But enough with the "we're good as we are" bullshit.

  43. Plus Rodon is a lefty. He fits their window and their rotation so perfectly. It would be a big gamble to give him 3 for $60 million but man sometimes you have to roll the dice. If he's past his injury history and comes back as a stronger version of the 2021 Rodon...man they win multiple World Series.

  44. The also added Melky Cabrera, Adam LaRoche, David Robertson, & Zach Duke and were crowned the champions of the offseason by many. Those moves were underwhelming in hindsight, but acting like all they did was add Shark is completely disingenuous.

  45. I'm sure our 2B situation can help remedy that at some point this year.
