  1. I know it's a day game after a night game, but I hate TLR's decision to go with Potash over Van Schouwen here......it's short sighted nonsense. I'm sure he will say it is to keep Daryl fresh for the upcoming series with the Rays. I don't like it. Typical LaRussa BS.

  2. I initially read that second sentence as Mendick and Leury, so I took it as Leury was covering the Sox for the Sun-Times and it was like, man, his super-sub role is going WAY too far.

  5. So just to make sure I understand your argument is that the As shouldn't try to get a good player for Montas because they have a bad farm and so they should accept worse players from a 30th ranked farm because they already suck? I think that should work. You should pitch that to WBSWF in case Jerry appoints him GM soon.

  7. From what I've heard so far, Colas might be closer to #1. #10 is absurd.

  10. Guys are going to be rested to proactively protect them from injuries, that's going to put Garcia out there a lot. Blame it on players needing rest not the guy whose on the roster because he can back up multiple positions.

  14. Joe was an outstanding major league starting pitcher -- he would have been a star had he played for a team that scored runs -- and an even better person. Total gentleman. He, Gary Peters, Little Looey Aparicio, and Ken Berry were my favorite mid to late 1960s Sox players. Other than attending Game 1 of the 2005 World Series, favorite ballpark moment was convincing my mother (I was 9 at the time) to let my season ticket holder neighbor take me to a game on September 10, 1967 (my mother's birthday) and being in the park when Joe no-hit the Tigers in the midst of the 1967 pennant race. Favorite fan moment also involved Joe. Sometime around 2015, a business deal gave me the opportunity to sit in a small booth at Lou Malnati's on Wells for about 2-1/2 hours sharing pizza and beer with Joe and his 1972 Oakland A's World Champions teammate Mike Epstein. I tried to tone-down the "fanboy" stuff, but wasn't very successful. Joe put up with my questions about pitching craft (he was a righty, but stylistically he reminded me a lot of Tom Glavine in his approach to pitching -- everything had a purpose, everything moved, and, in the earlier part of his career threw harder than people realized) and my recollections about his no-hitter. It was sad but kind of joyful too to watch this soft-spoken older gentleman light up when I reminded him that he hadn't given up a hit, but he had a hit, he was also hit-by-a-pitch as a hitter and hit one Tiger too (the only other baserunner against him was E5 Ken Boyer). I mentioned sad because Joe was clearly in the early stages of dementia or Alzheimer's and just a few years later it was announced that he had Alzheimer's. But on that evening, effervescent New Yorker Mike Epstein took care of his teammate while Mike and I regaled him about his career accomplishments. It was my honor and privilege to buy the man a few beers and toast his no-hitter -- about 50 years later, but I reminded him I was only 9 at the time. While his memory was starting to fade he remembered a lot about the game and his teammates. I asked him who the best player -- teammate or opponent -- he had ever been on the field with. Joe took about a tenth of a second and said that it wasn't even close. He said the single best player WAS a teammate, but he was being tricky because it wasn't a major league season teammate, rather it was a teammate early in his career when he was playing winter ball in Puerto Rico (great side story because many emerging major leaguers played winter league ball to earn extra cash and stay in shape). He said the guy he's talking about was the best he had ever seen in each and every category you could name -- best hitter, best power, best outfielder, best throwing arm, best and fastest baserunner, most competitive. Roberto Clemente. Joe said that playing with Roberto Clemente in his native Puerto Rico was like being on a team with Elvis. The ladies and men alike couldn't get enough of him. Clemente basked in all of the adoration. Within minutes of ending a game he was out of uni, showered, and dressed in ultra sharp and expensive clothes that would have been joked about if anyone else was dressed that way, but this was Clemente. Joe had a number of amusing "colorful" locker room discussions about Clemente, but this is neither the time nor place to talk about that. Joe said his interactions with the great Clemente were absolutely minimal after the winter ball experience -- mainly just in Florida spring training games -- because of course the A.L. and N.L. had no in-season interaction in those days, other than the World Series, and as a 1960s to early 1970s Sox player, it's not as if Joe was blessed to play in a World Series. That had to wait until 1972 with the A's. Joe added that the rare few times he saw Clemente after winter ball, Clemente always greeted him warmly and called him his nice "Texas friend." It was truly sad to learn a few years ago that Joe was suffering from Alzheimer's. It didn't surprise me because the beginnings were clearly there when I met him, but still so sad. It's now sadder still to learn he's passed, but, as many of you either know or will come to know, for the good people of the world who you care about, there is a certain grace when suffering is no more. RIP #20! Not a Hall of Famer, but like Paulie K., a definite inductee in the Hall of Very Good.

  20. BA update today that added. - Colas slotted at 10, which I don't know if it says more about those ahead of them or less on Colas. - Ramos moved from 11 to 6 - Kelly dropped from 8 to 13 - Romy improved from 15 to 11 - Erick Hernandez moves into 18 - Luna drops out of top 30 Despite two entering I for whatever reason can't seem to find who else dropped out beside Luna.

  21. If Vaughn wants everyday ABs against right handers, he has to continue earning them by hitting them better than the alternatives, including Eloy and Abreu, Sheets, Moncada (if you play him at 3B on occasion) and Pollock He's a DH, 1B, RF, LF most often, but can also play 3B in a pinch, and maybe even 2B for a game. Who is in those roles against right handers? For DH, it could be Grandal, Sheets, Eloy, and Abreu. For 1B, it could be Abreu, Grandal, and Sheets. For LF, it could be Eloy, Sheets, Pollock, or Engel. For RF, it could be Pollock, Engel, or Sheets. For 3B, it's Moncada, Burger, Harrison, or Garcia. How many of those hitters did Vaughn hit better against right handers last season? None of them. And it wasn't close. i'm excited to see him have a new approach and hit them solidly over a few ABs so far this year. But a few ABs don't make a season. TLR knows he needs to work Vaughn in, and he will. But the Sox need every one of the other guys to produce this year. So it's no solution to just "bench" someone else for Vaughn. The good news for Vaughn is that he's capable enough to play a lot of positions. This is going to get him more ABs than he would if he was just a DH/1B

  23. he played 7 positions adequately last year + dh. not many 'middle infielders' can do that. and last year it was sorely needed. he deserves a lot more credit that some of you give him.

  24. he's one of the most versatile players in the game. that's why they gave him the deal.

  25. He doesn't do anything special. For whatever reason LaRussa loves him. He should never get a multi year deal yet here we are. He got the Boston walk off and playoff HR but is so mediocre.

  26. Pitch to Kelenic was bad. I will say the ump missed the strike two to Kelenic the pitch before in the zone. May have been a different location and outcome if it was 0-2 compared to a 1-1 count. Oh well…

  27. Leury always has some brain farts here or there on defense, but I don't remember him screwing up this many routine plays in a week. I count 3 now this week. I can excuse him not hitting cause I don't have real high expectations of him at the plate, but a lot of his value is his ability to play ok defense at a bunch of positions. So far, his defense has been abysmal. It just adds to the frustration with him also being hitless at the plate.

  32. Their Twitter and Reddit reactions yesterday were straight up embarrassing. "Get a roof" "Grounds crew is only cleaning the infield before the Sox play defense" If the players had such a big issue with the rain, have your pitcher scream at the umps and refuse to pitch. It worked for Hendriks lol. Besides, it's not like the Sox didn't play in the same conditions. The victim complex is on full display in a game in freaking April. I feel like we as a fanbase make a lot of shitty excuses, but after seeing what Mariners fans were saying last night, I don't think we're so bad.

  35. I also think this narrative is overrated. If he had an excellent defensive position he wouldn’t be subbed as often. If Jose retires after this year it all takes care of itself.

  36. There are a lot of good players on this team and some are young. Other guys have to get AB's who have talent too. According to the Vaughn jockeys Vaughn was tired at the end of the year but now he's supposed to play every day ? I get it the guy is a superstar in training, he should be in the lineup every single inning of every single game forever, the next Cal Ripken , Jr. People acting like they don't know anything about how baseball and team play in order to win a championship works. He must become the stud he was meant to be and a few less AB's than 100 % of the time could ruin his development !! It's how panicky fan boys act because everyone hates TLR and he's doing all these things upper management doesn't approve of. Why hasn't he been fired yet ?? You must trade Sheets in order to prevent this madman from trying to find out if Sheets can actually contribute as much as he did last year ! It's all so petty. How did Sheets deserve that ? He only had a .900 OPS against RHP last year and all you hear about his stats are because they were cherry picked. UM OK wasn't he facing the same pitchers everyone else on the team was who didn't have a .900 OPS against them ? . Ok What about the fact he was our best power hitter in the playoffs ? That's an even smaller sample size than his season stats !! OK but all playoff stats are small sample size and being hot in the playoffs is what gets teams championships . OK wait if you think all Sheets stats are the result of cherry picking and small sample sizes, Sheets had more plate appearances against RHP pitching than Vaughn did against LHP last year. Does that mean Vaughn's great stats against LHP are also cherry picked and SSS ?? OK WELL um Vaughn is the 3rd overall pick in the draft and a generational hitter !!! He isn't that guy from last year against RHP anymore because he's crushing them this year !! Ok isn't that a small sample size too ? Play nice , play fair. The Sox are not going to prevent Vaughn from being all that he can be. But I suppose the same panic and blame will ensue if Vaughn slows his new found glory against RHP . It will be all Tony's fault for ruining a budding superstar !!
