  1. People are completely missing the point here. It doesn't matter whether TA comparing himself to Jackie Robinson is fine or ridiculous. As a white person, Josh Donaldson doesn't get any say in the matter. None. Given his history with the Sox, if he thinks anything he says to anyone on that team will be interpreted as a joke then he's an incredibly stupid person. Much more likely he was trying to get under TA's skin. He knows it, TA knows it, everybody knows it.

  2. I was just thinking.. man, what's an old white man like green line think about what tim anderson feels and thinks about being black in the current mlb game and culture. Surely he's an expert on this topic and understand the context and point better than that tim anderson guy

  3. some of this is comical... so you realize tim was saying he was jackie robinson because he was one of the few african american baseball players? His comment had everything to do with racial significance - not playing ability. Donaldson knew exactly what he was doing - its hilarious how he has fooled half this board.

  4. I was at the game today. A lot of people were wondering what had transpired. To be quite honest, I think a lot of the opposing white fan's hostility towards TA boils down to deep seeded racism and they see what he is trying to bring to the game as encroaching on a white man's game. Three years ago, a cop stopped me while I was in the subway because I was wearing a White Sox hat and asked me what the deal was with Tim Anderson. He apparently used to work for MLB and started going on a rant about how he shouldn't be bat flipping and was messing up the game. Halfway through it became pretty obvious what his problem with TA was. A lot of the Yankees fans were booing TA when he came to bat. I get he has destroyed the Yankees in the past but I also think that impulse comes out when some people boo him. As far as the Robinson quote goes, in context it makes complete sense. Also, keep in mind he was one of the first notable Major League players to start speaking out in support of Black Lives Matter and on social justice issues. In many ways, he has been a trailblazer in today's game.

  5. Hasn't fooled them. Half this board is supporting Donaldson for different reasons. True colors on full display tonight.

  6. Dude, if Tony LaRussa is calling you a racist, you really blew it.

  7. Wait, so Anderson told Sports Illustrated that he feels like "today's Jackie Robinson?" That kind of puts a different context to Donaldson calling him "Jackie."

  8. "Cancel Culture" is a phrase used by people who don't want to be held responsible for anything they do.

  9. Look, there is a real chance that Josh Donaldson is trashy enough to not get the ignorance and inherent racism in his statement to TA. He seems like the same douchey frat boy personality who uses any of the other slurs. He definitely is the guy who uses things like this to tweek people, and then play dumb because "he was joking", without understanding what he is really saying. He deserves no benefit of the doubt.

  10. I am pretty sure you can promote Sosa without hiring Ozzie, but I appreciate the ambition.

  12. A bunch of white men on Twitter calling Tim soft for being upset about being called Jackie is the epitome of America right now.

  13. I just can’t believe he said that…twice in the game. At that point it isn’t a joke…it’s a taunt and not a good one. I am more impressed with Yaz sticking up for TA and as another poster mentioned I hope that it puts an us against the world mentality back with this team. They need an edge.

  14. Here is Tim Anderson being thrown at for having fun. This is part of the reason he referred to himself as today’s Jackie Robinson…you should be embarrassed for supporting Josh Donaldson in any way, shape, or form.

  15. I mean you are white and you going to call a black man "Jackie?" Just think about that for a moment.

  16. Donaldson is an irritant and that is what he was trying to do. He claimed he was trying to diffuse any tension, but we know that isn't something he does. It was a flippant remark that was meant to piss TA off, and it was, whether it was intended to be or not, racist.

  17. So if you are a white person and say something that a black person feels is racist or insulting and your reaction is just shrug it off as a joke...do you essentially have a right to take away their reaction of being angered or upset? Why/how?

  18. Agree and if they joked about in the past it is a different ballgame. Donaldson is a jerk and and an asshole but before people start calling him a racist they better be damn sure that is what he is.

  19. I thought this was pretty terrible but if TA really said he feels like today’s Jackie Robinson, that puts it in a totally different context. Thats just regular trash talk in this case.

  20. Agreed fully. I'm not sure why anyone would be giving Josh Donaldson the benefit of the doubt here.

  21. I don't think he's fooling anyone. He's just allowing specific posters here to affirm their pre-existing beliefs. Spinning this onto Tim being at fault is complete nonsense.

  23. Also, whatever happens / happened, kudos to Yaz for sticking up for TA and bringing this out to the forefront. Anyone else notice Yaz took his earpiece out (assuming he was mic'd up for something) before chirping at Donaldson?
    3 points
  24. Or, it actually could have racist undertones, there's no way for anyone but Josh in his own head to know. Personally, I'm not buying the excuse.

  25. Why? Do you think Donaldson who just got into it with Anderson last weekend and who has been an enemy of the Sox for a half decade including trying to fight a Sox player in the parking lot last year meant it km a friendly way?

  26. Talented or not, racist comments have no place anywhere in life

  27. Yes Gordon, I'm sure Donaldson was apologizing. That is such his nature.

  29. I think the organization and we fans need to get past Ozzie. If any changes are made in the organization, I think the FO should reach outside to make any significant hires. Ozzie should get managing opportunities elsewhere, if they should arise.

  30. Very odd thought I just had. Why not ask Ozzie Guillen to manage the Knights and promote Sosa to Charlotte. Both are Venezuelan and it could help Sosa adjust to Charlotte quicker since he's had some trouble with adjusting to a new level. Also if Sheets and Vaughn can play OF why not Sosa ? Would love to see Sosa and Sanchez together on the Knights to put some pressure on Harrison and have 2 viable players to replace him.

  31. This game has the potential to be a good Sox comeback win. Hopefully get a few innings from Lopez.

  32. Good on Yaz. Also l see gamethreads are still misery personified. This time it's Andrew Vaughn that's a bust?

  33. Never was. Very limited athletically which means the bat has to be special. I’ve always felt his power was overrated, even in college.

  37. Yeah. How on Earth did Moncada only put up 1.1 fWAR in 2020. That’s just awful it’s almost like he missed 2/3 of the 162 game season for some reason. We should definitely blame him for that.
    2 points
  38. I wouldn't give up on Eloy yet, like to see what he does when healthy for an extended time. No doubt that the Sox over hyped Moncada, I'll never forget that silly video they put on their website when they called him up to the big club in 2017.

  39. Moncada has no love for the game. Since getting the big contract he has been hurt all the time. And when he does play he rarely hustles. Both him and Eloy need to be traded while anyone still thinks they have value.

  40. I guess if you’re going to give Moncada a day, better to do it against a lefty.
