  1. No matter whether he was innocent or not of the allegations re-signing Clevinger doesn't suggest the 'new start' and 'new attitude' that Getz has been big on over this closed season. Considering the WS will not be winning or contending anyway this season signing a player with this sort of baggage who is not exactly going to transform the team is needless.

  2. Thorpe's strikeout numbers are gaudy, his control is pinpoint, and his change is pure filth. I'm okay with him not being some jacked fireballer, like the version of Kopech we traded for. The guy can flat-out pitch.

  3. I mean at the end of the day, no matter what you think of the Sox, their scouting and development, and everything else, this is a guy who was wanted by the Yankees and the Padres. Even if you don't trust us, those are two organizations with decent reps.

  4. Bauer's problem, as much as his off field baggage, is that he's a complete douchebag in the Nick Swisher type (except worse) casting and his team mates and coaches all hate his guts. It's one thing to be a "free spirit" when you're on top of the game (likely due to "sticky stuff") it's another to do it when you're just another guy in the rotation ,at best.

  5. Do we really need to waste time on Bauer? The Sox haven't even shown interest.

  6. Bauer was always a dbag. In addition to the allegations, he just seems like the absolute worst person to deal with on a daily basis. I want no part of him. Even if he is innocent of all charges (I'm not saying he is), he is such an egotistical loudmouth.... he'd be blabbering about it all season, flying his drones into scoreboards, and boasting about cheating etc. Clevinger is not someone I would want dating my sister and I personally would not want to hang out with him... but his situation seems different than Bauer. I always saw Giolito and Cease hanging out with him and talking. Those two guys don't seem like the type to be friendly with a child abuser or wife beater. Maybe they were just being cordial because he was a co-worker but from the outside, it didn't look like he was some outcast. They have spent too much time talking about changing the culture and vibes... He isn't good enough and the team isn't close enough to winning to waste money on signing him if he's as bad of a dude as the public thinks. Besides, unlike Hahn, Getz strikes me as a guy who would care more about character. I imagine the team knows more about that whole story than the public. Would I sign him? Probably not... but if they did, they are doing it after having him in the clubhouse for a season and knowing more about him.

  8. The glass half full fan in me wants to vote "B", but experience tells me this is a C grade trade for the Sox Does it have potential to work out if Thorpe/Iriarte/Zavala pan out? Of course, but I am not sure how likely that is with the White Sox Thorpe dominated lower minor league hitters as a polished college right hander with a plus-plus changeup, but the 90-93 MPH fastball may not threaten MLB hitters enough. I also do not love his upright delivery, similar to Rodon, that may lead to shoulder and/or elbow issues down the line. He profiles as a #4, but with more ceiling if he can somehow find 94-96 MPH fastball velocity. Iriarte is the guy to dream on, with a potential three plus pitch mix. The control and command would need to take a full grade forward for him to stick as a starter. He reminds me of Reynaldo Lopez, with a bit less velocity. I pray for a starter, but far more likely he winds up in the bullpen. Zavala could be the prize of this trade, although he is quite a ways away from the majors. Impressive numbers at age 18/19 in low A, but will need to see him hit at the high A level before having an idea of what he could become. Dream of a MLB regular, but who knows? This is a serviceable package, although fans surely were hoping for at least one truly premium prospect in return for Cease. Getz could not risk carrying him into the regular season, where an injury or poor performance could sink his value.

  10. Do people think Iriarte is just some arm that can't hit the zone? He had a better whip and avg against than Nastrini last year and most people seem to think very highly of him.

  12. And if you consent to some rough sex you consent to everything including being choked until you pass out then continuing to have sex while unconscious? Let me help you with that. 1:10 in will get to the important part. I actually give a s%*# about infidelity and would never cheat on my spouse. But you be you.

  13. Love how this turned into a Trevor Bauer thread and a dissertation about what consensual sex is.

  14. I don't give a s%*# about infidelity. I do give a s%*# about abuse and nothing has shown that Clevinger and Bauer are abusers. If a woman consents to rough, consensual sex, that's not abuse.

  16. @TaylorStSox is right. Watch some videos of this dude pitch. If he is at 91-92, he will be fine. If he gets to 92-94 he will dominate like Mark Prior in 2003. Prior usually threw around 94 with his fastball and he also had amazing control where he could spot it where he wanted to. Watch Thorpe in some YouTube videos absolutely command the zone. He throws all of his pitches where he wants to and his change is ridiculous. He will be the anti-Kopech.

  17. “If Thorpe and Iriarte exceed my expectations, it’ll be a great return for Chicago, but I’m skeptical that they’re more than back-end starters or swing types.” Projects Thrope as a 4 or most likely 5. Iriarte has a flat fastball and is likely a pen piece long term. Also says that Zavala has the most potential in terms of ceiling. Law article in the athletic, if you couldn’t guess.

  18. It's been decent baseball at least. Last 4 games: Sox offense: 37 runs scored, 50 H, 23 XBH (10 HR), 33 K/12 BB Sox pitching: 8 runs allowed, 38 K/14 BB Sox defense: 3 GIDP turned, 3 CS (2 SB allowed), 2 PO, 3 E One imagines the last two might be more typical of how a regular season W might look, but if LRJ wants to throw in a few multi-HR games too I certainly won't complain.

  23. Always seemed willing to talk to the media even when it's not mandated.I liked his interviews with Garfien this spring. Really good pitcher hurt by 2023. Hope he comes back with a vengeance and SD gets more than they gave up for him even if that seems unlikely.

  24. It does take a bit getting used to. I got clobbered with laugh emojis and such when commenting about place-holders until Colson Montgomery "and the rest" start graduating to the parent club. The group think was that Colson Montgomery was the only prospect in the Sox system. Period. How dare you suggest there are more? However, every single trade of some dead-ender who will never get past AA, or will never figure out throwing strikes consistently is met with a din of wailing about how every guy dealt was import enough to hold onto well into his 40's on the off chance that he learn something. They're probably two distinct groups, but it all seems like the same people.

  28. Assuming Clevinger isn't signed and I'm still around to post, I will post an updated 40 man roster thread grouping players as to how they were acquired for Opening Day, after the final roster decisions have been made. As of now, over half the players on the 40 man roster are new since Rick Hahn and Kenny Williams were fired August 22, 2023. (7) Position Player Acquisitions / Additions Paul DeJong (11/28/24 Free Agent) Zach DeLoach (2/3/24 Trade) Dominic Fletcher (2/3/24 Trade) Nicky Lopez (11/16/23 Trade) Martin Maldonado (1/5/24 Free Agent) Braden Shewmake (11/16/23 Trade) Max Stassi (12/9/23 Trade) (14) Pitcher Acquisitions / Additions Prelander Berroa (2/3/24 Trade) John Brebbia (1/26/24 Free Agent) Josimar Cousin (12/20/23 Promotion to the 40 Man Roster) Shane Drohan (12/6/23 Rule 5 Draft Selection) Jake Eder (11/14/23 Promotion to the 40 Man Roster) Erick Fedde (12/13/23 Free Agent) Chris Flexen (12/30/23 Free Agent) Tim Hill (12/28/23 Free Agent) Bailey Horn (2/27/24 Trade) Jairo Iriarte (3/13/24 Trade) Jared Shuster (11/16/23 Trade) Michael Soroka (11/16/23 Trade) Alex Speas (10/3/23 Waiver Claim) Steve Wilson (3/13/24 Trade)

  30. You know who else was likable? Ted Bundy. John Gacy was, too, I'm told. Bauer does a lot for kids. Like mocks underage girls online for their weight and looks. Seriously, WTF is your problem? Why aren't you advocating for Luke Heimlich? You know, the dude who pled guilty for molesting his niece? I hear he's a nice guy, too. Real cheap. Yes, baseball has been littered by bad people. Like Marty Bergen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marty_Bergen_(baseball)#:~:text=Bergen appeared to have a,children before dying by suicide. You're not convinced that Clevenger is a bad guy? Make sure you put that on your Tinder bio.

  31. Bauer had consensual, fetishized sex with a few different women. He was investigated by MLB, the police and the DA. Ultimately, he was cleared. He's a really weird guy. He's a defiant asshole, but he's also fairly likable. If you watch his Youtube channel, he does a lot for kids and really loves the game. I'm not convinced he's a bad dude. I think he's a guy that really likes to challenge convention. Clevinger seems like a guy that likes to party and was set up by his ex. He's been under more scrutiny than any player I can remember. He might be dumb. He might be an asshole, but I'm also not convinced he's a bad guy. He was also cleared by the police, DA and MLB. Baseball has been littered with really bad people that did terrible things. Bauer and Clevinger have been under investigation for half a decade and they're cleared to play. What else can they do?

  32. I dont' think becoming the Raiders of baseball for a few years is the worst look for this franchise. Both Clevinger and Bauer's cases have been highly scrutinized and investigated and MLB has cleared them. It's not ideal, but they're both pretty damn good and cheap. I would bet both of them would also like to stick it to the league. They might give max effort while they're here, just to prove a point.

  35. I’m struggling to see a scenario where we’re competitive only a year from now in ‘25. Even ‘26 is wishful thinking IMO. We have some decent enough pieces in the minors but it’s not like we have a bunch of elite prospects in the pipeline. This isn’t like the last rebuild where you could look at Eloy, Robert, Moncada, etc. and have a basis to think we’d be pretty good in a few years.

  37. Dylan has been a favorite the past few years. He will be missed and wish him the best of luck in SD. I'll never understand why he didn't keep calling his own pitches after his opening start vs Houston last year, that was one of the most fun pitching performances to watch in a while.

  39. No, Taylor St, there's a whole lot more. I'm glad that you cut bait on Bauer at bundy and gacy. There's hope. You should really look into clevenger's baby mama fights. How he uses his millions to sue them for custody, then finds another gf to be nanny. Totally f*cked up situation. I get it. You don't want to know about his personal life. Maybe you should consider the fact that no baseball teams want to deal with his special brand of idiocy. You know? Michael Kopech's a head case. Let's his problems get into his game, or something else. Teams will line up to fix him. You know why? He never choked a woman to passing out, then beat her when unconscious, and then admitted to all of that on a police wiretap. He doesn't have a whole story testified to, under oath, of how he abused his baby mama, her child, locked her out of her living space, sued her for custody, etc. Do you see the pattern? A guy who can't throw strikes but is a fundamentally okay human being will get a million chances. An a-hole who is a predator and an abuser will find his opportunities dry up pretty quickly in a very family-oriented business. I don't have kids. The best way to hang with my nieces and nephews and their kids is at the ball park. I really don't want to encourage the kids in my life to root for that guy who choked a women, beat her, then sued her. I don't want their parents to have to explain that in 20 years. Or for their memories of me to be of us cheering on a rapist. That's really going to be a problem in 20 years. You may have absolved these guys. That's fine. Normal people don't want that in their "consumer" lives. Maybe I'm "woke". I don't want to explain to a 9 year old girl why rape or abuse is okay because some dude throws strikes.

  44. I can mentally excuse Hahn being an idiot and not doing a quality background check last year. I'm not sure its true, but that's how they presented it. Signing one of these guys willingly would make me seriously consider whether that's it, that they think I'm not the kind of fan they want, and other people I consider toxic are their real market.

  45. Fedde is the only one signed here in 2025,. The rotation below would provide the discussed contrast in styles and handedness within each series. Crochet (L) Fedde (R) Eder (L) Nastrini (R) Thorpe (R)

  46. Two better than average pitchers aren't worth the PR hit this franchise would take for their participation. I'm not sure why dudes keep bringing up Bauer. He choked a woman to passing out, then beat her when she was unconscious. He admitted this on a wiretap. Do you admire that? Addison Russell was a complete scumbag. He paid child support in quarters, he was such a prick. Clevenger is that much of a manipulative miscreant. How badly does your manhood need your team to rack up an extra couple of wins? Taylor Swift going to Chiefs' games uncovered the untapped market of Dads and daughters mixing it up watching sports. Total fun. I'm not sure how you sell the taunting of underage girls about their looks and weight on Twitter to young girls who are self-conscious about their own image and bodies. Yes, becoming the Raiders of baseball would probably make me, a total JR apologist, lifelong Sox fan, dragger of nieces and nephews to baseball games, stop watching.

  47. The one thing that I really hate about this trade is that Soroka, Flexen and Fedde are RH's that don't throw hard and feature plus changes. That's not how you set up a pitcher like Thorpe up for success. You'd like a LH or a hard throwing FB/SL/CU starter to separate their profiles.
    1 point
  48. No apology was given. The one good Soroka season you are referencing was in 2019, FIVE freaking years ago! C’mon… Flexen had two good consecutive seasons in 2021 and 2022, but was moved to the bullpen in 2022 when the Mariners acquired Luis Castillo at the trade deadline. However, he owns a bad ERA, WHIP, and pedestrian K/9 in his career and he was pitching half of his games at one of the most pitcher friendly parks in all of baseball. Good luck at GRate, Chris. And finally, Fedde. During Fedde’s one good season you referenced with the Nationals in 2020 out of his six total career major league seasons to date, he threw just over 50 innings with 22 walks and only 28 strikeouts for a horrifyingly low 5.0 K/9. He had garbage peripherals and a metric $hit ton of luck that season. Further, you think the KBO is at the level right between AA and AAA. I don’t know if that’s true but there’s a ton of guys not good enough for the majors that can dominate at that level, so I don’t see how you can solely depend on that, along with 50 mediocre innings from 2020 for any future MLB expectations. I don’t consider any of these three players’ one or so “good” seasons that you mentioned to be a “recent track record of success” like you stated they are. A “track record of success” would mean more than one good season and the term “recent” is defined as “having happened not long ago,” not multiple years ago.

  49. This was the mistake the Sox made IMHO. Not making him a DH immediately when he debuted. The dude couldn’t stay healthy in the minors with the Cubs before the Sox even acquired him. Now it’s not all the Sox fault. Eloy could probably suffer a season-ending injury getting up off of his couch and walking to the bathroom, but the Sox didn’t do a good job on minimizing his proneness for injury by continuing to throw him out in LF every chance they had, and refusing to stop doing it after each and every injury.
