  1. Wow, I thought you were joking. This is some strange stuff. Dude absolutely loves Jeeps. Even if the Sox were actually good, I’m pretty sure he’d prefer to cruise in his Jeep at night over watching a Sox game. https://www.soxtalk.com/forums/profile/11716-downtown-brown/

  2. Look if there is any organization that can represent going in circles for long periods of time and then ending up in the exact same place they started, it's the White Sox.

  3. It must be difficult to comprehend that getting Pham can both improve the team in the short term while providing a chance to fix it longer term. Surely an advanced baseball mind like yours understands the closer you get to the deadline the more teams can determine their needs and who else becomes available. This is how the trade deadline has worked for years. Imagine someone yelling at Getz on a message board about why Pham hasn't been traded yet 2 months away from the trade deadline while also yelling at him to stop making the team better and start acquiring talent .Both will happen through acquiring Pham. They already improved in the short term and he will bring back more talent. You really should get out of the basement more.

  5. You have to give credit to greg for only giving gambling advice when I have a strong feeling. I do not have such a feeling on this one despite the Yankees obviously being a much better team. If a gun was put to my head and I had to gamble I'd say bet the Yankees. You'd have to bet big though to win any sustainable cash as the Yanks are probably minus 360 or so.

  8. You are right. Poor base running, lack of clutch hitting, Maldonado in the lineup left runs on the table.

  11. We are over here with people seriously talking about building around Fedde, meanwhile this exists on planet earth. When I talk about talent gap, this is exactly the type of stuff I am talking about. THIS is what you want to find in the draft and trade processes to build around. You are looking to give yourself every opportunities to back into talent like this, not a 31 year old who found the fountain of decency. I mean I glad Fedde is having a resurgence, but if you want to squint and look at a guy like this in a real playoff rotation, you know one with World Series aspirations, where you do see him? 3rd? 4th?

  12. I understand the need to advertise in any business. And I doubt the "baseball staff" was much involved in this venture to say it's a distraction. But . . . It's sports. Just fucking win. That's way better than any advertising to put butts in the seats and eyeballs on the TV.

  13. Alonso's Spotrac estimated market value is 8 years $263M, I doubt he'll get that much but he'll get way north of $100M if he stays healthy all year and he's a Boras client. 2025 free agent class after Soto is dismal, there's a less than zero chance he signs with the White Sox.

  15. May 17, 2021 – In the Sox blowout win over the Twins in Minnesota, national controversy erupted centering around the ‘unwritten’ rules of baseball. With the Sox leading 15-4 the Twins used a position player, Willians Astudillo to pitch the ninth inning. He lobbed up a 47 miles per hour pitch to Yermin Mercedes who blasted it over the center field fence. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli took exception to it as well as many baseball traditionalists. White Sox manager Tony LaRussa wasn’t happy with it either saying what Mercedes did disrespected the game as well as he missed the take sign on that pitch. Some of Mercedes teammates and many Sox fans disagreed saying that using a position player instead of a regular pitcher also disrespected the game and that until the game is over players are expected to do their best regardless of the score. The next day, after the Twins threw at Mercedes, LaRussa ignited another controversy when he said that he didn’t think Twins pitcher Tyler Duffey deliberately did that, that it may have been a pitch that got away from him. Some Sox fans feel this was the moment when LaRussa began to lose the clubhouse and the Sox started sliding back towards mediocrity for the rest of the season and into the 2022 campaign.

  18. If the deals are there, it is the right move to make. In full honesty nothing Chris Getz has done so far shows me he has the stomach to do what is right long term versus short term.

  20. It depends. FIP seems mostly worthless to me, it doesn't really tell you anything that looking at "k/9, bb/9, hr/9" doesn't already, it just attaches arbitrary weights to certain outcomes. Its predictive value is basically useless as far as I can tell. Ostensibly because its prior assumptions are wrong or otherwise debatable, the main one being that pitchers have no control over balls in play. But we know that they do, two and four seam fastballs generally result in different types of balls in play. Consequently, they also result in different strikeout rates and so FIP rewards strikeout pitchers and punishes groundballers. This one thing completely invalidates FIP and I'd also quibble with how they assign the weights '13', '2', and '3'. it seems pretty arbitrary. I still like looking at it because it kind of tells you something interesting, just like OPS does. You can look at a guy's OPS, whether it's .600 or .800 or 1.150 and get a pretty good idea of how good a hitter he is. A good measuring stick. However, I'm not sure that FIP is actually more useful as a measuring stick than straight up ERA. We might assume Shota Imanaga is not going to finish the season with a 0.96 ERA. "well nrockway, his FIP is 2.27, so obviously his ERA is going to increase." Yeah, except it might be reasonable to assume it's going to increase well higher than 2.27 because the inputs into his FIP don't really tell you what kind of pitcher he is. Eight years pitching in Japan might paint a better picture, where he posted a 3.18 ERA and had much worse 'peripheral' (K/BB/HR) stats than he's demonstrated in the MLB. In this way, we see that the 'predictive' stat FIP doesn't accurately assess what kind of pitcher Imanaga is. So what's the point of looking at his FIP then? What does it tell me? I think common sense and standard stats are probably better than FIP specifically and most other advanced stats. I'm skeptical of most "advanced" stats, bWAR seems to be the only one that stands up to scrutiny and even that has many debatable components. I'm even more skeptical of the ones that claim to predict things which seems to be how Fangraphs is staying in business. The new Statcast measurements are genuinely interesting. This is new data that didn't exist before, not merely a manipulation of box score statistics. However, the analysis of them is probably pretty bad for now. Maybe a few MLB teams are doing interesting things with the data, but journalists are not and that's all I can see.

  21. Maybe Colson Montgomery ends up there, esp if guys like Gonzalez and Baldwin keep playing well, not to mention Ramos sticking at third.

  22. I see Getz reads SoxTalk game threads. I don't even like Fletcher and I don't understand why RF isn't one of Fletcher/Colas/DeLoach. This is literally the year to see what you've got. Meanwhile, I feel like I missed Mendick's return. When the f*** did that happen?

  26. Not to defend TLR here but didn't the Sox go on an incredible run after that. The drift to mediocrity began in the second half of 2021 but they finished the first half of the season with the best record in the AL.

  27. Honestly? I don't care if we are competitive for the rest of 2024, or even 2025. I am already in a mindset of we need to target being competitive in 2026, with a realistic goal of 2027. Why? The talent gap is sooooo wide between the Sox and real playoff teams that every single person who isn't a rookie today is probably not going to be here by the time we could win a divisional title again, meaning that all of them are disposable for pieces that can win a title in the future.

  28. I think he's a slam dunk pick. I like him so much more than Burns. If the position player side of the White Sox system was better I would be advocating for him hard.

  32. You and I think the same way. We are in the minority on this site. Seems to me our fans are in love with the unknown. They want to flip just about everybody and guess what, if that happens, we win 40-50 games again next season with no guarantee the prospects we acquire will succeed. Can't believe the smart fans on here are falling for the tank again. Maybe the Sox can just tank from now through eternity and ultimately one of the 5 year tank processes will work.

  33. I like the trade. Let's see if Getz magic touch for everyday players (Pham) continues with this guy. If this guy hits a batch of homers that'll be very welcome. Hopefully they put him on the big league roster rite away. I like it. Cause Mendick was hitting before he got hurt; Pham has been a godsend, small g, and Ramos is dandy.

  34. Think they trade another 5 guys between now and the deadline. Mostly pitchers. That was the plan all along one they hired Bannister and identified as many cheap dumpster dives they could who had a sliver of hope of turning it around. I've said all along it wasn't much of a plan turning lead into silver but I never saw much else he could do given the cutbacks. So he spread the money around on as many of those types as he could to build a team and tried to put some good defenders around the pitchers . Next you all get to be unhappy with the returns. But tougher competition leading to the deadline may diminish some of the sheen . Hoping Fedde can keep his metrics fairly decent since he's likely to have the most interest.

  35. referencing "anybody of note" is kind of the giveaway that I'm not thinking I've listed some type of "secret treasure chest". Robbie Grossman brought back a AA bullpen arm. Pham could bring back a slugging OF prospect that isn't overhyped. Fedde and Kopech are probably the names that will bring back the biggest packages. Maybe both, together, bring back something like the Lynn/Kelly package? I think they will move anybody that draws interest.
