  1. What an absolutely spectacular accidental statement on how insanely awful this roster of offensive players actually is. Who put this roster together?

  2. What else is there to say? They just absolutely blow. Every young guy they trade for sucks, even post-Hahn. They are so far away from being relevant yet alone contending for anything of importance. They are easily the worst organization in all of sports

  3. Looks like we might have been better off losing that year by not hiring Getz, huh, JR?

  7. yeah the drafts haven't been great but every team eventually polishes up a low ranked prospect and turns them into a real major leaguer, everyone except the Sox you can't keep blaming the draft, I would put almost all of the blame on Reinsdorf and his GMs, they're the ones who keep putting people in charge of player development who don't know a damn thing about developing a fucking baseball player. we can't be shocked when they f*** up every single high ranked hitting prospect year after year

  9. They don’t even want to admit this is a down to the studs rebuild. They are not dealing with reality, and MLB needs to step in, This is a charter franchise in the 3rd largest market in the country. There are lemonade stands run better than this. JR needs to sell or let someone competent make the decisions. Even when he finally does something right like firing KW and RH, he wrongs that right with Chris Getz, who will be happy to give you a 7 year rebuild. That’s 7 years of GM paychecks he wouldn’t get anywhere else, and I’m sure he knows it. JR has no schtick. He uses the same one he always has, he’s at the mercy of his dumbest competitor. Think what the rest of the AL Central must think of him. The highest payroll in the division and a record no one in MLB history has ever been as bad or worse through 136 games. And in the midst of this unprecedented run of awfulness, he sends Roger Bossard out to the 78 to build a makeshift infield to remind people what the can have if they just build it for him. f*** HIM.

  11. From my interview with Chet: ML: One of the problems I guess you could call it for big leaguers is that they make everything look so easy but that had to be a tremendous change for you going from the infield to center field. Describe to me some of the drills and work that you had to do to be able to pull this off. CL: "It was a challenge and it took a lot of work but I wanted it. I used to say there are no bad hops in the sky. I’d say to myself that no matter where the ball was hit I was going to beat the ball to the spot. I became a student of the game, that’s where a lot of the work was done. After a few years I knew all the pitchers and how they were going to throw to hitters. I knew the signs, I knew where the ball was going to go if a right handed pull hitter was up and one of our pitchers threw him a breaking ball for example." "It got to the point where for me; it was a lot of fun to rob guys of hits. Bobby Bonds said to me one time that I was one of the best young outfielders he had ever seen. This was a guy who played with Willie Mays, and for him to say that to me...boy that was special. Cal Ripken Senior also told me that I was one of the toughest outfielders to go from first to third on. That was because I was always very aggressive charging balls." ML: With the thousands of games that you played Chet I don’t know if you’ll remember this one play, but if so, I’d like to know what you can tell me. It was on July 3, 1977. The Twins were in town and the Sox beat them the first three games to take over first place. I was in the stands that day and in the second game of that double header one of the Twins hit a drive into the gap in left center with a man on base. You sprinted backwards and to your right and at the last second stretched out your left arm making a shoe top backhanded catch before crashing face first into the wall. Do you remember that play? CL: "Oh yea! One time I was invited to appear on that kids TV show they used to have “The Baseball Bunch,” hosted by Johnny Bench. What they do before you come on is show a minute or so of highlights from what you’ve done and that play was on there. I remember it! Anytime you start hitting the warning track you know you’re only a step or two away from the wall. " "That was one of the things about playing center field in Comiskey Park when I was there. They had such a big center field and you had a lot of room to roam. (Author’s Note: In most of the years Lemon was with the Sox there was no center field fence. The barrier was the base of the original grandstand where the scoreboard was located... 445 feet away!) It was terrifying. You could never take a pitch off. You always had to be on your P’s and Q’s. I was always fearful that if I made a mistake or didn’t get to a ball, you could play it into a double or triple or if it went over your head in center, an inside the park home run." "I remember another catch that I made and boy I wish I had the video of it. We were at home and a guy hit a ball over George Orta’s head at second, so it was in right center field. I went after it and said ‘I got it.’ Richie (Zisk) started over and said ‘you take it.’ The problem was the ball was curving away from me! I kept running and running and running and the ball kept curving. Richie had already backed off so it was up to me. Finally as I get to the right field foul line I dive and make the catch. I get up and start brushing all this chalk off me, meanwhile Richie is laughing and the fans are giving me a standing ovation."

  12. I’m grateful for this board because most of my Sox friends don’t even want to talk about the team anymore. Most just say “let me know when Jerry dies”.

  14. If he's the guy in charge of making David Eckstein, winning players, he sucks too. Knights are 28th in OPS in the AAA despite playing in a bandbox. Barons are 24th in OPS in AA. Dash are 25th in OPS in High-A Cannon Ballers are actually semi-successful, ranking 7th in Low-A in OPS. He's just another guy with a (albeit, minor) Royals connection that Getz brought in despite the fact that the Rice University baseball team has been horrible during Janish's tenure.

  16. Literally nobody is saying Getz is doing a bang up job - literally nobody. A handful of us realize he took over the very worst situation possible. He took over a team where every single asset failed other than Cease and Lopez. He took over a team with a notoriously bad owner, hardly any MLB assets and a bad farm. What's he supposed to do? I wish we had a different GM, but I'm not going to hate Getz for the Sox situation.

  18. Tomorrow they'll set the franchise record for losses AND record their third double-digit losing streak of the season AND go 0-10 on the homestand. That's called a triple crown of ineptitude!

  20. That is honestly insane. Lenyn Sosa got on base 18 times in the month of August and not a single one of these sorry ass hitters on this roster was able to drive him in a single time. How the f*** does Chris Getz have a job? That is a great find.

  21. Will be the 40th player to make his Sox debut this season. 27 was the previous franchise record. And will be the 61st player used overall- also a franchise record. But Getz and company are doing a bang up job.

  22. Yeah, they're bringing Iriarte up to appease the 18 fans who even know who he is. Some of you guys need to touch grass. In reality, they're probably getting his feet wet in hopes that he pitches well, has a good Spring and might be able to fill a back end starter role next year.

  23. Stop me if you've heard this one before, but Noah Schultz threw 4IP scoreless. 4IP, 0ER, 1H, 2BB, 7K. He tried to play it cool after the 3rd: But was clearly fired up after the 4th: His August: 18.2IP, 1ER, 8H, 8BB, 22K. 0.86 WHIP, 0.48 ERA. Maybe could nab a Southern League pitcher of the month?

  24. To answer your question as to why Chet was traded. He talked about it with me: ML: You hit .302 in the strike shortened season and played your usual solid defense but on November 27, 1981 you were shipped to Detroit for Steve Kemp. The reasoning as I remember it was that the Sox wanted more balance in the lineup and Kemp was left handed. (Author’s Note: Harold Baines was basically the only power threat from the left side as opposed to having guys like Fisk, Luzinski and the newly acquired Tom Paciorek who were all right handed hitters.) Were you ever told by the Sox why they let you go? CL: "That may have been part of it but there was another reason." "In spring training 1981 I had verbally agreed to a five year contract that would have made me the highest paid player on the team. It was a great negotiation. Eddie Einhorn, Jerry Reinsdorf, Roland Hemond, my agent and I all sat around a table one day and worked everything out including some deferred compensation. For some reason I hadn’t gotten around to actually signing the document though. A few weeks later they signed Carlton Fisk and his numbers came out. When I saw those I told my agent “hmmmm maybe we need to renegotiate.” Everything that I did in five years, I did in Chicago and now I wasn’t going to be the highest paid player anymore? I know it was childish on my part but that’s the way I felt at the time." "It created some problems. After a period of time I said that I’d just play my next year out (1982) and then see what happens in that off season. I guess the Sox thought that I was automatically going to go the free agent route and that wasn’t necessarily the case. However I did know that other clubs were interested, I knew that Earl Weaver of the Orioles wanted me badly and that the Sox were close to trading me to them at one time." "It was weird how some things happened. I mean "Bull" Luzinski, whom I respected, and thought did a great job for us by supplying power, came out and said something like ‘if he’s not going to sign then we need to get somebody for him.’ After the trade I did play out my option but Detroit re-signed me to a 10 year deal which gave me security. I had some no trade clauses in it so I had some control if I was going to be uprooted again."

  25. A team would have to be nuts to give up any elite talent for Robert at this point.

  26. Awful. He hit 17 with the Sox and later hit 17+ in 6 seasons with the Tigers, with his single season high being 24 homers. Meanwhile, Steve Kemp topped off at 26 homers in one season and played left field? 😩 Analytics definitely weren’t a big thing back then because they would have said that along with his gold glove defense in CF (how did he never win one?), he was likely among the most valuable players in baseball, and he was still young at only 26. So brutal… He was basically a way better Mike Cameron.

  27. Incomplete. Some are really hopeful, but we will see. Ultimately what counts is what they do, not what they are ranked. Hopefully Schultz is a stud. Bush and Nastrini have major flaws. Cannon might be OK but might not. Who knows what is going to come of Thorpe elbow Martin looks good,, but how much is that have to do with Janish? Wasn’t that Banniister sugessting a grip, and it worked right away?

  28. There are more positives than there are with hitting, but we were completely unable to find one decent reliever from the minors this years. The starter call ups were sporadic at best. No one that started out in the top half of the minors forced themselves on to the roster.

  29. I don’t think they want to call up Montgomery yet and I would hope they don’t. I would also be surprised if Lopez gets claimed, even for the small remainder of his $4.3 million salary. Teams will wait to see if he is just DFA’ed and released if they have any interest. If a man is needed, I wouldn’t be surprised if Mandick is the next man up.

  30. and just for the record, there have been more poorly assembled teams than this who weren't this bad everyone with a jersey number, outside of Crochet, is a miserable failure and will have to wear this as a badge of shame for the rest of their lives I can't imagine being part of the Sheets family though, yikes.

  31. Considering how Related and JR have states the studies all show the states 10 figure investment is a total win for the state, how they couldn’t find investors to build this privately with minimal cost to the state. They will be counting their money forever.

  32. No just another that wanted to talk about the positives of a 31-105 team. The players love Grady. Brady loves the players. How nice. Talking to Clueless Schriffen, who again told us last night how Nicky has been killing it in the leadoff spot, the Sox appear to be loaded.

  33. When I saw those numbers come out, I thought to myself, wasn’t that Related Midwest on the 78 stadium proposal under $2 billion? So Jerry can invest $3.5 billion on improving the surrounding UC parking lots and not build his own gem on the 78 plot of land? Something isn’t adding up.

  34. It is, but most would be blocked out once they built the stadium. Unless you were way up in the upper deck.

  35. No doubt that the Sox won’t come close to the 1962 Mets, these bums might not win another game, there should be no way in hell that Getz should keep his job after this abomination of a season, JR needs to admit his mistakes and apologize to the fans which I know is a stretch but if the man has just a small iota of a conscience he would do it and regardless of his tax situation the greedy bastard needs to sell the club.

  36. How this guy is still getting playing time is beyond me. How much more do the Sox need to see from Sheets to realize he’s bad?

  39. It’s far worse than that. Anger would mean they care. The (former) fans just do not give a s%*# about the team anymore. It will take a lot of work and several years to win them back.

  42. If JR wants to pay for the stadium himself I have no objection at all. But he's already been gifted a stadium once along with a sweetheart lease agreement. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. If he wants a new stadium he can pay for it. Especially given how he's run the franchise and the return the fan base has gotten from it.
