  1. Aside from parking, I don't think I or my family ever spent a dollar in that area outside of the ballpark. I went to that on-site bar they opened once. I knew of nothing to do there, you get off the highway, follow the signs, park, give Reinsdorf the parking fee, then leave. You eat somewhere else and you don't spend time there afterwards, or beforehand unless you bring stuff with to tailgate. Our normal setup growing up was to stop at the McDonalds at the Skyway oasis for dinner and met dad there coming out of the city. When I lived in Pittsburgh, I took the bus in, had dinner before every game, took photos on the bridge, usually stopped at the bar across the street, might have stopped at a bar or shop on the way home. Spent probably $100 more every time and was happy to do so.

  2. I don’t completely disagree but that is all a byproduct of the ownership and the most dysfunctional organization in professional sports. Guaranteed Rate is absolutely still a serviceable stadium for an MLB team. The facility and location aren’t the issue, it’s the incompetent execution and management by ISFA and Jerry. Putting a competitive product on the field is far more important than the stadium. They just lost the most games in league history. There are far more important things than trying to extort the tax payers to make the real estate guy even richer.

  3. If our corporate billionaire doesn't get those dollars, another one will. It's not like anyone will see a tax cut if the block Jerry here.

  4. I was not sure where to post this but since this thread is about on field talent, here we go.... I was at the Night of 1,000 Jack O Lanterns event at the Chicago Botanic Gardens the other evening and one of the themes for the carved pumpkins was "Chicago Sports Rookies".....I quickly wondered if the Sox would be represented but low and behold, right after Angel Reese, was Jonathan Cannon. Congratulations, Jonathan.

  5. MLBTR has the Sox offseason outlook up. They had all their arb eligible players except for Crochet as non tender candidates. That's development.

  6. Yeah the dichotomy between Grifol in the press conference and in the dugout is staggering. As an easy to follow example he said he wanted to get Moncada’s walk rate up. Moncada immediately had the lowest walk rate of his career. How the Hell does that happen?

  7. If you pay to stream your favorite team it shouldn't matter where you live or where the game is being played. I remember as a kid driving to Indiana to watch a Bears game because it didn't sell out. Times have changed and sports has to keep up.

  9. Menu ESPNCompare and contrast Sox with the worst teams/franchises in other sports.... 1) Iconic black white and silver logos 2) Unstable franchises...have occupied major market/s but second team to 49ers/Cubs...never found home in LA or St Pete or Nashville 3) Terrible at drafting and signing FA's 4) Al Davis and JR iconic owners who aged out of relevance 5) Bowers/Crosby=Crochet/Robert Davante Adams=Benintendi 6) Proud histories/historic franchises...only major difference the two stadiums and 70s 80s early 90s winning tradition of the Raiders. "The biggest problem is the same one that has faced this organization for years. I wrote about it repeatedly at the end of the Jon Gruden era in 2021, then again when it traded for Adams in 2022. After nearly a decade of poor drafts and short-sighted decision-making, the Raiders are missing virtually an entire roster's worth of homegrown players. Across an eight-year window from 2016 to 2023, they essentially would have done better drafting out of a magazine with 10 minutes of prep like your friend who forgot about his fantasy draft: Earlier versions of the Raiders tried to make up for the absences by getting very aggressive in free agency. The 2024 team is fielding the league's fifth-youngest roster, which is at least a testament to change. They're playing a young group of receivers after the injuries, paced by rookie tight end Brock Bowers, who has been fantastic. The offensive line has three starters on rookie deals, while the same is true for five of the six regulars in the secondary. Young, cheap talent doesn't necessarily equal breakout players, but the Raiders were often too confident that signing veteran free agents would solve their problems. I'm not sure they're any more likely to whiff by giving the same chances to young players." https://www.espn.com/nfl/insider/story/_/id/41911328/nfl-worst-teams-2024-which-need-rebuild-roster-depth-chart-salary-cap

  10. The Dodgers hired Andrew Friedman because he had the analytical know-how from his time with Tampa Bay. The Dodgers are essentially what would happen if Tampa Bay had a budget.

  11. Tons. Lineup constructions, pitching decisions, pitch selection, . . . There’s a little more to modern baseball than “throw hard and swing hard.”

  12. I do. The last thing we need is Tony LaRussa back. The second to last thing we need is someone angrily out of touch with modern baseball. That is clearly Renteria. While he isn’t the worst candidate I can name (Tony LaRussa is), his obsession with analytics being wrong and the game needing to be played the way it was 20 years ago would be a major hindrance for this teams recovery. Renteria’s way of thinking about the game reminds me a ton of Grifol’s.

  13. 78 at least looks like something futuristic. Staying at the present location...just like using antennas for tv, simply feels like the past and out of touch. There's simply no intriguing vision there left to sell. Sox have done enough making up for mistakes of the past...which inevitable makes things even worse.

  14. Sounds like a perfect job for Renteria.

  15. Yeah, the won-loss record in 2025 is going to be a trainwreck anyways, so I’m looking at the manager as someone who: 1. Will contribute to player growth / development (for younger players) 2. Will let veterans (read: “scrap heap pickups”) do what they need to but hold them accountable for performance Basically the goal is for the young players to be able to develop, and for the veterans to be able to play well enough to be flipped for assets. I don’t completely lack confidence in Getz’s ability to do that.

  17. This. The guy has made almost all his money on real estate deals. The GRF deal completely fleeced the state and taxpayers but…from a business perspective, it was pure genius. He’s trying to do it again. Hint…so are the Bears.

  18. Sad but real...the ONLY emotional/business connection that many White Sox fans have to the Bridgeport neighorborhood is the ballpark. That is it. I wonder what the percentage is of people attending a ballgame at the Rate who spend a dollar outside of the parking lot/ballpark? I love walking down to Grandstand and supporting that business. But even for me that is the extent of me "bringing business" to the neighborhood. I personally hope the 78 gets built...outside of going to White Sox games my favorite ballpark to visit is in San Diego! My first reaction to the renderings of the proposed ballpark made me think it could be like that! Padres games (as well as before and after the games) are fun (although they also have a fun team to watch). Just my opinion...once Comiskey was torn down my deeply emotional connection to the area was changed...Comiskey still pops up in my dreams occasionally! Not trying to dump on the neighborhood...I would love to live in a community like that and would feel safe there and proud of it. Just thinking that the 78 represents an opportunity for the White Sox to own baseball in Chicago as the thing to do...if they do it right!

  19. As taxpayers, who fkn cares if they extort us? They waste billions of dollars a day on stupid things. It's never ending and only going one way. At least this time we get a brand new stadium... what's the problem?

  22. The 78 is roughly 2.5 miles straight north of GRF. The same Metra line that stops on 35th runs parallel to the parcel of land being discussed. Clark & Roosevelt is also much closer to Union Station, Ogilvie, and the Metra Electric and South Shore lines. Not to mention the same CTA lines that stop on 35th also stop at State & Roosevelt, with the addition of the Orange Line. And the Clark, State, Archer, Roosevelt, 16th/18th, #146, King Drive, and Cottage Grove bus routes all servicing the same 2-3 block area. For someone who claims to keep up with the city, you sure don't seem to understand the basic geography of the city and how much more accessible the 78 would be versus Armour Square park...

  23. LWE may have to travel to Loyola in week 2 of playoffs. Greg in those standings BR should be above Fenwick and Joliet Catholic. MC is 4-1 v top 15 teams and in the 4 wins they were not close. Libertyville and Downers Grove North should both be ranked as should Naperville Central. Way too many smaller catholic schools. Greg Brother Rice is building a new baseball complex and had some nice things renovated when I was last there. Still a lot of work to do but they seem to be making improvements. For about 25 years they did nothing to improve the look. Enrollment is around 700 which for a single gender catholic school is great. I don't mean to sound like a dick but even at that number you would not make the team. I had 2000 kids as well. 150 tried out for baseball. Cliff Petrak told me to not come back for third base or OF tryouts after seeing me try out for first.

  24. So the Rock Island line runs parallel to the site, so I would have to imagine that they'd build a direct stop at the 78 site if everything moves forward. Currently they have about one train per hour post 7pm (heading back to the burbs, last one leaves after midnight) and used to utilize an additional train 30 mins after conclusion of the game, but I'm not sure if that still happens.

  27. It's MLB.tv without blackouts. Make MLB the primary and any local stuff secondary. Obviously anyone with a little tech skills can get around blackouts, but it shouldn't be necessary.

  28. As an Iowan, blackouts are particularly painful. I wouldn't hold my breath though. They've been talking about removing them for years and nothing happens

  29. I want to hear someone give a correct message. No more talk about the importance of bunting or playing fast and aggressive or fiery or whatever. No more lectures about how baseball was correct 20 years ago and everything is wrong today. Talk about being smart, being well prepared, putting guys in position to succeed. A person who at least sounds like they understand that there is a modern aspect to baseball. Add in some actual professionalism. That's one I've been asking about for 10 years or so, actually look prepared and treat things and other people like you're the public representative of a billion dollar business.

  30. Went to a couple hundred games from 1955-1990 and I probably sat up there more than other part of the park along with the right-outfield upper deck. Let’s face it, if fans want great skyline views, they need a new park at 78.

  31. I think some of the posts here are missing the bigger problem. It’s not just about player selection. With the players listed having success elsewhere..it’s not about player identification, but how those talents are used and developed. We’ve seen it far too many times for it to be a random coincidence. The coaching and player development, at all levels, just isn’t close to where it needs to be in order to be competitive.

  32. Reducing the value of two pro teams you are in partnership with /also own to help another pro team move to another area is next level dumb. I know you hate the guy like we all do but remove this layer of foil because you are smart enough to know how little sense it makes.

  35. And a big difference between this and the Dodgers situation is the Dodgers still got paid when most of their fans couldn’t watch. This is costing the team money. The fewer the viewers, the less they can charge for advertising.

  37. When I saw the name Chris Getz, I immediately thought two things… 1.) What the f***? You can’t be serious. 2.) Isn’t Getz the player Beckham wrote “is gay” about in the infield dirt once? No exactly a resounding reaction to a hiring. 😆
