I think everyone is being way too short-sighted. I understand the lack of patience though. There’s a clear plan in place. Chris Getz totally revamped the organization in regards to pitching philosophy, hitting philosophy, research and development, international scouting and professional scouting and for the first time in like 25 years, linked all the different departments together. It had to be done. I don’t know that it’ll work because ultimately, they need to find good players but these changes put them in a better place to find good players. The trades have been uneven at best and while the draft record appears to be promising, we just don’t know yet. They’ll be awful in 2025 by design though. The owner won’t allow the front office to spend and it’s also imperative to draft as high as possible in 2026 so being a bottom 3 team this year is essential. They have to get more out of trades too and Luis Robert package has to hit like Crochet deal. They also need some surprise trade return somewhere like a monster Davis Martin package. In an optimistic view, they have a top farm system and clean financial outlook going forward. They’ll never spend as much as we want but I do believe they’ll spend because they have to. They have no commitments. I do think Chris Getz understands the assignment more than his predecessors though. He knows who he works for. Build a large core of young pitching, find a process to develop bats and focus on premium positions. They can spend on first base, DH, back end starters and bullpen once the time comes if you have a cost-controlled young core. It’s hard to give a grade. I’d probably go with a C overall but it’ll depend on drafting and developing players ultimately.10 points

Ask yourself iis there another MLB team that would hire Chris Getz to be its GM? I think the answer is no. Maybe I'm way wrong, but I really doubt it.5 points

This is one of the strangest posts I’ve ever seen on this forum, and that’s saying a lot.4 points

I think you and Jerry R are the only people alive who thought Chris Getz deserved a GM job.4 points

There is absolutely, positively nothing absurd about it and if you feel otherwise then you have proven incapable of being rational on this matter. Any GM who came in had to deal with an organization completely devoid of talent at the upper levels and it would have impacted their on-field results in 2024. If you want to blame Getz for that issue, that’s an argument (and a good one) for why he shouldn’t have been named GM in the first place. It’s not an argument that he performed poorly in his first year as GM.4 points

The worst team in MLB history followed by another year where you say they MUST be one of the three worst, nets a C. I hope you're not teaching America's youth with those standards. I love that you call the crochet deal a win/big return. Let's wait and see there, Jimmy.4 points

The bulls, while on a modest 7-3 run out of their last 10, are currently 9 games under .500 and in the play in tournament as the 9th seed. They are not successful, they are not “good”, and after this season they will draft pretty far from the top of the lottery and certainly will not be drafting one of the top kids like Flagg to become better. I’m not surprised Tray has bought into the bulls though4 points

I don't think there is one poster that has ever posted the White Sox being this bad has nothing to to with the previous regime. That would be insane, just as insane as it would be to say this is all on the previous regime, except for Chris Getz, who last i looked, happened to be part of said regime.3 points
-
He was part of the previous regime, but he also wasn’t the top decision maker. We as fans have no way to discern what his contributions were to the broader organization. We can obviously look at his resume as the head of our player development staff, say “this track record sucks”, and not have hired him. I 100% would have never given him this opportunity. But once he was named GM, his performance is not tied to his past roles, but rather what he’s doing as the top decision maker starting in 2024. If you guys can’t acknowledge that point, there isn’t really much to debate here.3 points
-
I’d give it an F for the sole reason that I’m not sure it could have been worse in some aspects if you tried.3 points

Getz didn't deserve a shot at the GM Job because he was director of player development during a failed rebuild that was largely because no one got developed. That's the main reason why. He should have never been allowed to be GM here. He should have been let go with the rest of them.3 points
-
I hope they lose enough to have the top odds at landing the #1 pick. It's a significant part of this working. I do think people are being short-sighted in some regard. Focusing on the big league record too much just doesn't make much sense to me right now. Comparing to Dave Dombrowski doesn't really make sense. He only goes places where he can spend lots and lots of money on players.3 points

Gave him a D so far. This can change quite a bit over the next year or two, depending on how things go. Positives: I like a lot of what's been happening behind the scenes. They're modernizing the organization and making what appear to be some good hires. Time will tell how these work out, but they are digging out from such a massive hole left by KW and Hahn so it's going to take a bit. They're leaning into their competitive advantage drafting Sale-like pitchers, and the results so far are encouraging. Fedde was a diamond in the rough, and a smart signing. Crochet became a premier starter and was traded for a really nice package of prospects. Last years' draft looks solid. Interested to see if that continues with the next two. Negatives: Recency bias, but the rash of TJ surgeries and other injuries is scary. They started to have issues with injuries when Herm left and that continues. They need to figure out their medical staffing and training issues ASAP. Getz had a pretty poor track record as director of minor league development. Some of this is the lack of talent in the org once the big prospects came up, but you'd expect they'd find a way to make SOME of these guys good. Colson's regression last year. How much is on him, on his back injury, and on the org? It's early still, but the trade returns for Cease and Fedde look pretty terrible so far. If Vargas carries over his spring improvements that will help a LOT, as will Zavala figuring it out and Thorpe making a recovery for 2026. They seem to struggle quite a bit identifying hitting talent, and then getting those players to maximize their potential. Fletcher and Deloach are prime examples. Hopefully hiring Ryan Fuller and establishing a modernized identity and process helps, but they need to fix this.3 points

This is absurd when their role directly affected the job they fell up into, especially for the crowd that likes to pretend that this was such a surprise and a shock, and nothing could have been done to stop it.3 points

I think Martin will prove to be very valuable this season and he costs nothing. They have a top 50 prospect in baseball who plays shortstop already but yeah, the Robert trade return and next two drafts are very important. I don’t care about their W/L record from last year and I certainly don’t care about it this year either. It doesn’t matter all that much. We don’t know the outcome of the Crochet deal but they did extremely well on paper and with their process. I’ll ignore the other comment but it’s kind of a low blow. Don’t question my standards in regards to my day job.3 points

I went with B. I really like the organizational changes. Wiith the budget restrictions we know JR has they organization and development needs to be the strength. Hiring Venable and mckinvin were hires previous administration havent done. Trades have been more bad than good. Cant really judge the current team as they aren't trying to win. They are spending all the money retooling the organization which is best for them in the long run.3 points

I couldn't give Getz anything but an F after the worst season in history, and nothing he has done this winter suggests they will be much better this season.3 points

It’s way too fucking early to grade Getz, but gun to head I’d give him a C. Too many posters are scoring based on his previous role and 2024 on-field results, but it’s the behind the scenes stuff that really matters. Unfortunately, it will take some time before we can confirm if those changes will right the ship, but at least we know he’s making structural investments and bringing in outside voices in hopes of bringing us out of the Stone Age. Also, the additions of Venable & McKinvin to the coaching staff are super exciting to me and a good sign that Getz has some sort of vision (or is able to sell people on one at least). On the roster side of things, the results have been mixed. I don’t get as worked up as others on the scrap heap signings. They serve a purpose if they aren’t blocking a major league ready prospect and so far Getz has had some hits & misses, but that should be expected when shopping in the bargain bin. The one obvious exception being Maldonado, who was a dumb signing from the get go. The only meaningful FA he signed in Fedde was an absolute home run. His pick up of Smith in the Rule 5 is looking super promising and he has done a decent job of grabbing talent off the waiver wire even if there haven’t been any huge hits yet. In a constrained environment, he done an ok job here. Unfortunately, his trades are trending the wrong way. Fletcher & DeLoach look like busts. Thorpe & Berrora are both injured. Zavala & Iriarte both regressed. S. Wilson demoted and unclaimed. The Vargas deal will look light until we see some actual production out of him. Not much left to be excited about with the Bummer trade. The Crochet trade looks good on paper, so we got to hope that Getz is getting better with experience and/or has better pro scouts in place to support his decision-making. Let’s definitely cross fingers there.2 points

Show me where I said he was blameless. I have ripped him for shreds for all sorts of stuff. I just think more of the blame for our on-field results last year fall on Jerry, KW, & Hahn. And I don’t think the results would have been radically different with another GM if they had the same constraints Chris had.2 points
-
I really don’t understand what you are getting at here. I have never once defended Getz’s track record as the head of our player development, but what does that have to do with his performance as our GM last year? In his previous role, he wasn’t in charge of resource allocation for the org. We have no idea what technology upgrades he was proposing to KW & Rick that were ultimately rejected. We do know that he’s made considerable investments in this area as GM this year. Whether those eventually change the trajectory of our player development function remains to be seen, but it was never going to be a flip a switch and suddenly everything is fixed. They still have to take the data from the physical technology and pair it with their new R&D function to create the actual insights that will drive player development. Hopefully we start seeing some real progress in this area next year and if not then flame away.2 points

I'd prefer Baldwin to start at SS, fwiw. Also, who came in to relieve Thaiss at catcher in this game? Because the wheels are falling off back there.2 points
-
How was he supposed to overcome the lack of talent on the major league roster and in the upper minors in one offseason with no resources. He went out and added Fletcher & DeLoach, two guys you were excited about, to help address our OF depth. Are those misses on him or the Pro Scouting staff he gutted over the course of the season? That’s a perfect example of why it’s so hard to judge Getz at this point in time. So far, he’s had to rely on people he’s actively looking to replace to help guide his decision making. Hopefully that’s no longer the case and it will be much easier to assess Chris moving forward. What are the other landmines are you referring to?2 points

Well I'm glad that you're making an attempt at this but I think me and West Eddy just piss people off because no matter how sound your arguments are people don't buy the bad luck stuff mainly because having best players who are expected to produce who are almost always injured is not just bad luck it's expected bad luck so somehow you have to magically find their projected WAR out of thin air .Doesn't matter to all the fans that Getz inherited these players. While he was Director of Player Personell and Asst.GM he should have waved his magic wand and made them less susceptible to injury even though he likely had nothing to do with trading for them or extending them. All these arguments are nothing new to the ones you're discussing this with. They just refuse to look at it that way. You're not allowed to say hey yea Getz shouldn't have been hired but he was and at least he's made some moves that an outside hire may have made. But the Sox were a dumpster fire way before Getz became GM and his other jobs too. The previous rebuild just never had much of a chance to succeed without players who developed into strong consistent professionals. All the fans here were constantly projecting Eloy to start having 40 HR seasons or were fooled by 2019 bouncy ball stats (Moncada) or sticky tack stats (Giolito) a cool SS (Anderson) or Vaughn's "generational talent" are embarrassed for having put their faith in these players and the FO and owner. The terrible record so soon after the collapse coincided with the collapse of Intl scouting, drafting and development, injuries , labor issues and a worldwide pandemic all on top of an organizational house of cards is now thrust at the feet of Getz and in a years time he hasn't managed to make the Sox win like at all. Good hires, rebuilding things in intl scouting or R &D , getting new toys for development , improving the farm system, all these things pale in comparison to letting Jesse Chavez walk or trading Mena or God knows what else everyone seems to focus on. No one wants to hear it. They just want one neat little package of blame to belong to Getz and JR. Optimism and hope and searching for silver linings is for children. You must raise your spears against the evil that has transpired and led to this abomination . You're either with us or you're against us. 😡 🔪🐖🐗2 points

Getz walked into a bad situation, yes, but he was also involved in its making. He then proceeded to dig the hole even deeper, putting out the worst team in baseball history while burning limited trade capital for poor returns. He also failed miserably in adding short term flippable assests while burying youth that needed to be evaluated at the big league level. His one good trade is mostly responsible for a higher farm rating in my view, and a farm system rating based on amassing talent other orgs traded to you is not impressive to me. Getz, the former director of player development, can't exactly point to many developemental wins under his watch. Position player developemet has been a long term failure for this org, of which he was a part of and in charge of. It is too soon to know if his org changes will have a tangible impact on player developement - an area he has already been responsible for and has failed miserably. I'll believe it when I see it. His hires look good so far, but it is too soon judge the impact. While it appears he is overhauling the org, we haven't exactly seen him display a magic touch in other areas, so the skepticism there is fair. Dragging the org into the 20th century is great, but he gets no credit from me until its proven that the org is functioning at the same modern era standards the best orgs in baseball are. If Getz were an outside hire walking in with zero previous ties I might have more grace for the job he has done so far. But that is not the case. The few positives we can point to aren't very tangible yet, and simply don't offset his tangible failures so far. He gets nothing but an F from me.2 points

I don't see how you can even think that. A big part were in this mess is because he was bad at his job as the director of player development. If we had hired an outside candidate to be GM, absolutely, they had no ties to this mess and have a huge pile of work to do to get it right. The guy they did hire, absolutely had a hand in creating this disaster by his inability to do his job successfully. How can you say that it should just be ignored now that he is the GM instead?2 points

Great post. The simple fact that he started getting rid of the dead weight and revamping and realizing the Sox org needed a change is a plus and I'm willing to see what happens. People here are anxious and rightfully so. As fans no one wants to go through what happened last year I'll say C+ B-2 points

It will all boil down to getting better players. Hopefully these prospects are better players, but we were all fooled by that before. The guy calling the shots is the same guy "developing" Moncada and Kopech and Eloy and all the rest, albeit at the backend of their develpments, but we also have a couple of those as well. The Cease trade doesn't seem so great now. That can change, but Thorpe gets service time not to play. Hopefully the Crochet trade works out. Hopefully what they get for Robert actually can play. Hopefully being fired by the Orioles doesn't mean you aren't a hitting guru. To me the grade is incomplete, but if I had to give a real grade, it would be F+. Not a total fail as there still is some potential, but these guys have to perform. I still think he was the wrong man for the job.2 points
-
I'm being generous and giving him a D for these exact same reasons. He doesn't get a honeymoon period cause he was part of the same regime that was an abject failure. His first big swing, the Cease trade, looks like a complete bust right now (unless you really buy into Twitter videos from Samuel Zavala's trainer). He basically duplicated the Sale or Quintana deal - so we're supposed to believe that a guy that was in the org for the last go around can land the plane this time? He's not the first GM in baseball history to walk into a bad situation, but the only GM to match his futility was one in charge of an expansion franchise in the 60s and this is after he talked a big game (that big ol' defense quote), so he failed by his own standards.2 points

It’s like on election night when a state is called for a candidate as soon as the polling closes. Once the first pitch is thrown, the Sox are eliminated.2 points

Its a hard topic to discuss, because there is no other team in baseball that would have hired this man to be GM. So yeah, I think an unqualified GM turning a 100 loss team into a 120 loss team absolutely should have been career suicide. I think any respectable owner should have realized that was a huge mistake and fixed it.2 points
-
Your original post was that being historically bad one time should be career suicide, so yeah, citing the bad luck matters in that regard. I never once said that winning 49 to 51 games would be good or acceptable. We all knew the team was going to be bad last year and they somehow surpassed our wildest expectations. Getz definitely isn’t free from blame, but context does matter if you want have an objective debate on his performance in year 1. Regardless, we didn’t hire Getz to make us a mediocre team last year…he was brought in to structurally reform the entire organization from the bottom up. This idea that we should fire a GM who came into an impossible situation after one season because of the Win-Loss record is crazy to me. Unless you feel like he’s failing behind the scenes, then he should continue forward as GM. That being said, another historically bad season would be hard to ignore. At some point, the foundational improvements should start providing a higher floor in terms of the on-field product. If not, then some of the things viewed as being bad luck suddenly become the debate of bad process.2 points
-
I can squint and somewhat accept someone saying that they give him a D. Giving him a C or higher at this point is just wild. He oversaw the worst season in MLB history, and deserves no leeway for that since he was already in this organization and oversaw player development leading up to said season. He's just as responsible for it as the guys who got fired. He's putting out, somehow, a worse roster than the 2024 team to start this year. His trades have largely been a disaster. So far, this has gone exactly how I suspected it would go by JR giving an unqualified in house guy the job of GM instead of doing the right thing and bringing someone from outside to fix this mess.2 points

Chris Getz should have never been named GM. But I got to disagree with this idea that lots of GMs have come into disasters similar what Chris did. We’re talking about an organization that was years & years pretty behind the rest of the competition in many key functional areas. He also assumed a roster that lacked talent, had to take on the most incompetent manager I have ever laid witness to, and had an owner unwilling to spend to help offset the previous regime’s shortfalls. No matter what Chris did, this team was going to be an absolute s%*#-show last year. To be historically bad requires both a complete lack of talent and incredibly bad luck. Again, I don’t think Getz should our GM and certainly warrants blame for what transpired last year, but the fact it was even a possible outcome falls on Jerry and the previous regime.2 points

A LOT of GMs have come into complete disasters. That's usually what opened the job in the first place. None of them have ever managed to do what Chris Getz achieved last year, and a large chunk of it was a complete lack of minor leaguers turning into major leaguers which was literally his his entire job description previously. It can't be that literally every draft pick for a decade was unfixable.1 point
