Madrigal has a limited ceiling due to his stature and lack of power. Vaughn has to hit otherworldly to separate himself from a typical 1B who is going to hit anyways. I think it really isn't that difficult figuring out what most of the people who are down on these type of picks actually wanted. Guys with more of ceiling who played premium positions. Neither guy fits the bill Madrigal doesn't have the ceiling, Vaughn plays a non premium position. When you are picking top 5 you are expecting to walk away with someone who has the potential to be a superstar down the line for both players I don't think anyone expects that out of them both should be good but unless Vaughn bat ends up being top ten in baseball the pick is going to be a waste.

Rainy Day Poll: Evaluate the Big 3 Trades
wrathofhahn replied to gusguyman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Had Kopech not blown out his arm I would have voted for the majority. I can't now though. Cease is dominating and has tremendous stuff. Eloy is injured but still a top prospect. Basabe and Diaz are more interesting but it's all about the top guys. -
It depends on the situation and the person at bat. I am not a never bunter and sometimes the threat of the bunt is almost as powerful as the bunt itself but late in a one run game or less, with less then two outs, with a runner at 1st you have to be able to bunt. I often though see managers after the game say well I bunted early because it seemed like it was going to be a close game that is what I have a problem with.

Has a sale for 50 percent off. I usually get in on it now. Ends 5/21. Just a heads up not sure where to put this. https://www.mlb.com/live-stream-games/subscribe?partnerId=ed-13742044-1142852613

Hahn bad. Kenny worse

This why we should have moved him when he was riding high last year. Too much risk. F'n Hahn.

Predict the White Sox Record After 30 Games
wrathofhahn replied to SoxBlanco's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I've been pleasantly surprised at how well some of the hitters have hit out of the gate. I'm more then happy to be wrong. -
Not convinced his numbers right now will look real at the end of the year but he is shaping up to have a nice season regardless.

The Anderson Saga (continued from game thread)
wrathofhahn replied to Dick Allen's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I never cited it being the end of black oppression but the word is rooted in slavery. I just find it disrespectful like for example if someone who is jewish started called themselves Untermensch I would find that disrespectful to the victims of the holocaust (my family is jewish). But people are allowed to do/believe whatever they want regardless of your personal feelings of the word (or mine) it clearly is inappropriate for a place of business. -
It had little or nothing to do with my actual argument but go ahead flame away. The point is the MLB has a history of suspending players for using inappropriate language on the field and if you look at the history of suspensions Anderson suspension is completely in line with others if not a little light. I don't even understand the consternation he was suspended a single game in a 162 game season. So what? Why does it matter to guys if he is fined and not suspended for a game?

The Anderson Saga (continued from game thread)
wrathofhahn replied to Dick Allen's topic in Pale Hose Talk
My opinion probably isn't going to be very popular but it's really noone has a license to use the word due to it's history. And the reasoning to why is really simple it's because the people who were affected most before emancipation have long since passed and don't have a voice. -
In both cases they didn't stick around a whole lot longer. Whether that is directly tied I dunno but it probably didn't help
-
I'm not arguing the punishment fine him suspend him do whatever it's 162 game season what does it matter. Just show it's not tolerated. I remember when the SS of the blue jays used a gay slur on the field "Tu Ere Marcion??" the response was much more harsh I think he got suspended 5 games and was traded afterwards. Pillar got suspended two games for saying the same and ultimately was traded. Matt Joyce got suspended two games for saying the same thing. In retrospect 1 game seems kind of light but like I said it's 162 games 1 or 2 games what does it matter. It's all just symbolic.

Any sort of racist or homophobic language really. It doesn't matter who says it and I've heard well the MLB has to pay attention to how that word is used in conversations among the youth. No they don't. They are running a business and these games are televised. They are not going to jeopardize tv contracts among other things because certain people feel they have a license to use the word nor do I think they want to get involved with the selective enforcement of who uses the word and get in the whole area of intent and how it was meant.
-
I stand with MLB that kind of language has no place in baseball. For all those saying well who is Manfred to tell a black player not to use that language. He's the boss and as much as we all view it as a "game" it is still a workplace.

Anyone else want to claim Swihart / DFA Castillo
wrathofhahn replied to bmags's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't see it that way and if we can't even take a small chance on former top 20 prospects in a backup role (to start) then this team is never going to be successful. I don't know why were weren't more in on Pham either last deadline. One of the benefits of being bad and rebuilding is we should be able to take chances on buy low guys and not worry if the move doesn't work out. There is no benefit really to having a 4A guy like McCann on a 1yr deal. -

wrathofhahn replied to bmags's topic in Pale Hose Talk
McCann is on a 1yr deal and is likely not part of our longterm plans so why worry about it? Too much focus is put on the catchers everyone in Boston was thrilled with the move until Sale pitched and was straight trash despite finding his missing velo. If he becomes a problem we can DFA anyways. He's free. He's basically just a shot in the dark and there is upside on Swihart part to be more then that but we can play him in a backup role for the time being. -

I care about getting as many assets as possible. Maybe Swihart ends up being nothing but who cares when we are talking about the alternative of McCann -

I doubt ownership wants to eat Castillo money. He can be flipped later anyways he is a much better hitter then he has shown so far. The guy to move is McCann. -

It's an easy decision for me. Claim Swihart and trade McCann. McCann is only going to be around a year anyways. He's done enough that some team could use him as a backup. Saihart is under control to 2023 take your chances and see if you can get at least a backup guy C out of him He wouldn't be blocking anybody as far as the Redsox goes they made a reactionary move due to their pitching imploding. Did Leon help Sale at all last night? -
If you want to spend money you spend money you can't operate on a mid market payroll and turn this roster into a winner. Can't be done. Now if we had Tatis up here along with Eloy and Kopech was healthy then that would be a different story but what allowed the Padres and Phillies to sign both players is quite frankly they are further along then we are.

I said all offseason when people were freaking out like little school girls at the prospect of getting Harper and/or Machado that this team isn't any good. That we need to have a foundation before we worry about choosing what type of flooring to buy. That stance remains unchanged the number one problem with this franchise is not an inability to spend money it's an inability to judge and develop talent at the minor league level. If anything the one saving grace and what gives us the best chance is moving forward is we don't have a ton of big money contracts on the roster. Whomever comes in afterwards is free to execute their own vision on their timetable. I don't care how much money the owner makes in the nearterm we are all aware this is at best a mid market team and in order for the Whitesox to be successful we need to have numerous guys on their pre-FA contracts play well. Once that happens then lets worry if the Chisox/Jerry aren't spending but until then I don't want Hahn or KW to burden the next regime with a bunch of longterm deals so he can win a bunch of meaningless games in lost seasons

Which team is worse?? The O's or the Sox?
wrathofhahn replied to Jack Parkman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
We don't have a Alex Cobb and Chris Davis on the roster -
I watched the game on ESPN and saw the same thing. His stuff didn't look electric like last year (though in all fairness it was cold) and we all know he had those arm problems to end the year. It will be interesting to see what happens. One thing I do know is if there is something wrong there is no hiding it from the Boston media for long.
