The number is high but at the end of the day whether he signs for 30 million or 43 million doesn't matter much. What will determine whether this contract makes sense is his play.

FS: White Sox Should Be Pleased With 3rd Pick
wrathofhahn replied to Y2Jimmy0's topic in Pale Hose Talk
CJ Abrams may have the highest ceiling of anyone in the draft. Draft for ceiling. Other guys we should be looking at is Malone. Espino. Ealy. Allan. Hinds. -
Maybe for Eloy we have him 7 years regardless.
-
Hector is fake news. His report never made sense from the get go. Surprised at the people here who really believed 8/100
-
You are forgetting that David Wells for I can't remember his name. Kenny sold damaged goods. As for this proposed extension this would literally be the dumbest move of the offseason. There is zero incentive to do this the Sox already control his service time for 7 years. It should be for 30 million tops.
-
The local politicians were not. They are the ones enforcing bylaws and handing out permits.
-
I don't think it will happen but still it's the offseason so why not? We did something similar on a lesser scale with Soria last year it worked out well for both Soria and the Sox
-
That is nonsense. Amazon saw the hostile reaction of the local politicians and realized it wasn't worth it without a local buyin. There is so much more to that type of project then just whatever package of tax credits Cuomo and De Blasio conjured up to lure them to long island. They'll be dealing with building permits, zonings, and local bylaws for however long they are there whether it be 15, 20, or 30 years. They didn't want to go to a place where the climate was hostile to businesses.

I'd sign him to a big money 1 year deal with a decent player option for year two. Then if he plays well flip him later. What are his options right now? Can't be all that great. What do the top guys make around 15-16 million offer him 20 million plus a 18 million player option see if he accepts. What did Britton sign for? 3/39? Gives Kimbrel the chance to make the same amount of money in two years or hit the market again in a year if he wants win win for both clubs. By the trade deadline team with budget constraints will find his salary more manageable after 105 ish games at that point it shrinks to around 7 million.

Noone is forcing anyone to be/remain a sox fan. The whitesox are supposed to be entertaining following a rebuild is not for everyone those that don't have the stomach for it can always come back in 2-3 years when we start to see the kids come up and play.

Good enough stuff to be a number 2? At times he was struggling to hit 90 on the radar gun. He finished the year averaging 92, His fastball velocity is now dead average with little movement. His hype was based on his electric stuff and fastball. He isn't the same prospect from three years ago. Honestly neither is the upside people talk about him like he's still the same guy he just needs to tweak somethings and learn how to pitch better. Lets just be honest his stuff is gone people need to be honest about his ceiling now is.

Why you should not want Reinsdorf to sell the SOX
wrathofhahn replied to 59th street's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The core issue the guys we have traded for and drafted the past couple of years have not panned out on the field and/or been injured. We all know the names you guys keep going on bemoaning the loss of Machado baseball is greater then one player. This team is devoid of talent everywhere. There will be other opportunities to hand out 250 million on a top player. Kopech. Moncada. Gio. The fact none of these guys are producing for us right now despite being top 10 prospects that is the real the problem. -

wrathofhahn replied to 59th street's topic in Pale Hose Talk
That simply doesn't comport with what happened. You can disagree with the CWS internal evaluation of these players value but they put out a legit offer. They traded for Alonso. The signed Jay. They made a serious effort to get him. Them trying and failing to land Machado to me anyways lowered my opinion of the FO. 1. I don't think this roster is anywhere near to competing. 2. it exposed the desperation of the FO trading for Alonso and Jay were the moves of a desperate FO. Patience has clearly run out with the rebuild with is unfortunate I just hope Hahn and Kenny desperation doesn't lead them to make any short sighted trades. -

They were clearly willing to spend, -
Phillies are betting big on Harper being able to stay in the outfield. To me that is not a smart bet to make especially in the NL but hey best of luck to them.
-
Aggressive would have been like I said in the earlier thread give Manny your best offer put a time frame on it of a week and if he doesn't accept walk away. There is nothing aggressive about what we did. Foolish is more like it. Trading for Alonso. Signing Jay weren't only dumb moves from a talent standpoint but indicated to Machado camp we were all in and weren't going anywhere and go nowhere we did as they sat on our offer for months. The other option was we could have done what the padres done and just given him whatever he wanted. That's not smart either. I don't have a problem with the offer and not going to 300 million. I think I had him 9 years at 270 as my absolute final offer and that was mainly on the basis of what Stanton got. Harper I had much lower because I think he profiles as a future JD Martinez like DH. You have to have a breaking point and noone should have a problem with that the problem was Hahn and the CWS offer were used.

Shit. With all these injuries we could really use a 2nd influx of talent. It seems all our top pitching prospects have injury concerns -
Nolan Arenado to sign extension with the Rockies
wrathofhahn replied to Kiebs13's topic in Pale Hose Talk
None of us know how both players will age but when you start to get anything past 34 (32 is when aging curves mark the start of a steep decline) until proven otherwise they are writeoffs as far as I'm concerned. Arenado has one such year with his deal. Machado has two. And I doubt at what 31-235d (5 years today) Machado is getting a 5 year 150 million offer taking him to 36-235d at least not unless something changes with the way FA is trending which is possible. Still I'd rather take my chances based on what we are seeing today. I don't think we are going to agree. One thing that isn't being taken into account by either one of us is the fact he still had one arb year remaining and while that was torn up it probably was able to do with why they were able to get Arenado on a shorter deal at better terms. Otherwise he'd be hitting FA at two years older instead of just one. -
Signing Shields. Signing Hosmer. He also traded Grandal for Kemp. Rizzo for Alonso. Trea Turner and Jake Bauers for Myers. He was the architect of that 2015 Padres disaster. We all bemoan the loss of Tatis but Preller has made so many more stupid decisions. He's also managed to get out of it by ripping off teams selling them damaged goods and abusing the IFA market. So there is that.

Nolan Arenado to sign extension with the Rockies
wrathofhahn replied to Kiebs13's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Arenado is only a year older not two. Or 1.2 years older to be exact. I'd much rather have the contract the way the rockies have it set up either they'll get most of Arenado prime years and they'll pay a premium for that OR he'll opt in until age 35. Machado is much more likely to opt in because like you point out his opt out occurs when he is a year older. His contract will run into he's 36. -
Preller has done a great job defrauding teams and stealing their prospects but where does all this confidence in his FA signings come from? He's made one boneheaded move after another. The fact he signed Machado bodes extremely well for us.

Nolan Arenado to sign extension with the Rockies
wrathofhahn replied to Kiebs13's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Bref: Last 4 years he has averaged 6.3 WAR - 6.1 WAR/650. Machado last 4 years has averaged 5.4 WAR - 5 WAR/650 Regardless even if you feel they are even I much prefer Arenado deal. How can you look at both contracts and think Machado is some sort of bargain? -
Nolan Arenado to sign extension with the Rockies
wrathofhahn replied to Kiebs13's topic in Pale Hose Talk
What? Arenado went for 8 years 255. That is a much better deal. He's a year older then Machado but has been much better. -
Did the Whitesox make a mistake not forcing a decision?
wrathofhahn replied to wrathofhahn's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It matters because it's a teachable moment or it at least should have been. At some point we will go after another big fish if we approach it the same way we will likely end up the same result. I never wanted Machado so I'm not broken up we didn't end up with him but I am concerned about the way we approached negotiations we came up as desperate and put all our eggs in the basket of Machado when Grandal, Moose and Dozier signed one year deals. We brought in Jay and Alonso two of his bum friends and let them bunk with us and still had Machado turn us down which moved it beyond a disagreement on how they handled negotiations to outright embarrassment. I've supported the process and I still think we can get by continuing the rebuild but this management has made misstep after misstep. I don't have any confidence anymore for Hahn and Williams to execute what is left of the rebuild. The Machado is just the cherry on the top for all the stupid decisions of the last three years. From who we have taken with the draft. To moving Tatis. To calling up Kopech in a pointless year then watching him blowing out his arm and probably 2-3 years of service time. To calling up Moncada before he was ready.
