This was the right move the roster spot is more valuable. We can use it to snag someone whose been DFA or the Rule 5. We can find someone with his profile easily in this league if both those things don't happen.

Sox acquire Alex Colome For Narvaez
wrathofhahn replied to YouCanPutItOnTheBoardYES!'s topic in Pale Hose Talk
I understand the need to make a move. With Castillo coming back he at best was going to be our backup so we are essentially trading a backup catcher for someone who can close. Just thought he was worth more. I guess not -

Yep there is no real reason to keep him on the roster. We can find someone better via FA. -

I would non tender Matt Davidson. A Garcia I would non-tender and try to bring back. L Garcia would an easy tender due to him being able to play CF -
There was no rumor. I presented it as something they should do.

Because the alternative is Corbin or Keuchel If I was a fan of another team the last thing I would want is the FO giving big money to a flash in the pan like Corbin who doesn't even have dominating stuff or signing a 32 year old Keuchel to 4-5 year deal when he can barely throw 90 now. I'd rather take my chances on a cheap cost controlled guy like Rodon even if I had to give up prospects. What's the alternative trade your farm for Thor? There is a reason why the Mets and Indians are sniffing around with their SP they see the FA market.
-
Because we are at least two years away and he only has three years control remaining. His years of control are valuable probably more valuable then him proving he can stay healthy. Paxton return is discouraging but the SP market is awful. There might never be a better time to cash in and let some other team absorb all the risk.

This is just agents playing games with the media. They'll use the Whitesox as a darkhorse to drive up the prices of their clients. If Hahn is smart he will only sign veterans to shortterm deals and continue to look to sell. This team is nowhere close to being ready. Rodon and Abreu should both be moved. Omar Narvaez should be looked at as well Agents have made a living suckering desperate GM's and teams fans that you can turn around a 100 loss team via FA. You can't unless you have payrolls like the Dodgers, Sox, and Yankees. This team has too many holes at too many positions to be able to fix them via FA.

Braves sign Donaldson to 1 yr 23M deal pending physical

The ideal move is to trade for Ellsbury and/or Santana and get some prospects while rebuilding while the same time adding some professional guys to the clubhouse -
Morosi: White Sox interested in "both Machado and Harper"

Morosi: White Sox interested in "both Machado and Harper"
wrathofhahn replied to Jose Abreu's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Per MLBTR Meanwhile, NBC’s Vinnie Duber takes a look what the oft-suggested fit between the White Sox and Machado. While the Sox undoubtedly have the long-term payroll capacity and an opening at third base, Machado’s preference is to play shortstop, where Tim Anderson made positive strides in 2018 after being signed as a long-term option there. Duber also notes that Machado’s “Johnny Hustle” comments wouldn’t sit well with recently extended manager Rick Renteria, who has previously benched multiple players for failure to adhere to fundamentals such as running out grounders and pop-ups. GM Rick Hahn recently praised the “culture of accountability” that Renteria has created (link via Duber), adding that it’s important for the organization that its players buy into said culture. Seems like the FO has many of the issues I do. The guy is a jackass and would be a bad influence on our younger players. It's also no secret why he had a career year right before FA whomever signs this guy longterm to big money is going to regret it -
Heyman says White Sox interested in Nelson Cruz
wrathofhahn replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Can we afford to do both on a moderate payroll? Machado could work if we have no other holes on the roster and he'd essentially be an upgrade over whomever else was at 3B. But if we are carrying a lighthitting 1B/LF or DH because we cannot afford otherwise due to all our money being tied up in a premium position player what is the point? Or we are unable to address holes in our starting rotation? Then you just become the modern day Alex Rodriguez texas rangers who despite having the best hitting shortstops in baseball routinely lost 70-80 games because they never could afford to address their rotation. I look at this roster and I see holes everywhere. Even Abreu is getting older and only has one year left. I don't see how we can afford to tie up 30-40 million of a likely 120-130 million payroll until we see the kids and figure out where the other needs are. -

People act like Machado is going to put up another career year. He had a .782 OPS the year before and a .822 career ops 4,8 WAR/5.8 WAR 600 PA. Sanchez has averaged a .702 OPS the last two years and 3 WAR/3.8 WAR 600 PA mainly on the basis of his defense. I'm not saying 3B isn't an area of concern of course it is we need more offense from the position but I look at DH which we had two players share the role and put up a combined .758 OPS and realize you can upgrade that position first much more cheaply and whomever you bring at 3B is unlikely to be better defensively then Sanchez. It's something the Redsox have always managed to figure out first with Ortiz and then with Martinez. Why give a guy 10 years when you can pay a guy like Martinez who is much, much more likely to put up a .900-1.000 OPS moving forward for 3-5 years at around 1/3 the price. -

I mean why not he will probably have just as much impact as Machado at 1/10 the cost. The smart move for teams who don't have 200+ million to spend on guys who play premium positions is to have cost controlled guys fill that role and get good production from LF/1B/DH. People on this board think it's like the NBA where one superstar is the key to your fortunes no filling holes is. Machado (orioles) and Harper both teams missed the playoffs. This team has holes up and down the roster we could sign both Machado and Harper we'd still miss the playoffs. Hell we probably wouldn't even be .500 -
Rule-5 Draft thread (Thursday, Dec 13th)

I'd take a shot he has some drug problems but we could always hide him in the bullpen if he doesn't work as a starter -
Yeah he lost a ton of velo. if he regains it with the cubs he could be decent but that was sort of the premise when we traded for him. It never happened. He just ran out of time
-
Not really we traded Clippard to the Astros later and made a profit of 1M.
-
I mean Rutherford is a legit prospect. The only way the Sox were getting more was if they ate some of Robertson deal. I still think they made out quite well. Rutherford bounced back last season and Robertson made 13 million to not close and put up a 3 ish ERA and FIP.
-
Maybe but the rumors have dogged him for years. He was supposed to be on that list of 103 players as part of BALCO.
-
Roids might keep him out

James Paxton traded to NYY for 3 prospects
wrathofhahn replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
How does this trade make sense for us? Paxton is a FA in 2021 and would cost a top prospect which isn't our timeline and the yankees didn't give up enough to move someone like Rodon. Glad he stayed away. It does signal the Yankees aren't thrilled with FA and they still have plenty of depth to make another move. -

Yeah only one real prospect. I wanted to trade Rodon to them but that doesn't even come close to the return -

Machado represented by another agent? -
I would be fine with either Medina or Bohm. Maybe the Phillies would be uninterested I don't really care I'm only looking at it from the Whitesox perspective. I don't think he's worth more then 2/20 at this point. He'd probably get less actually and have to settle for a 1 year deal. So if they want us to take on at the bare min 22 million in extra salary to provide them relief then they will have to pony up a top prospect otherwise I'm fine with going after one of the other reclamation guys that are available every year. I'm sorry for the spelling everytime I see the name I think Brohm (brian brohm). I looked at his MLB.com profile and still spelt it that way.
-
To be clear: We wouldn't be trading prospects Santana has - value. Franco put up very good numbers last year in a pitchers park. Their owner has talked about spending stupid money and they have been linked to both Machado and Harper. Machado obviously makes the decision to trade Brohm more likely. Where Brohm was picked doesn't really impact on anything. I mean from a PR standpoint it maybe embarrassing but he was never really the 3rd overall talent. He signed well below slot. MLB.com has him ranked as the 50th ranked prospect right now. Like I said in the other post I need a very good prospect to take back Santana salary. He's probably over paid by at least 22 million over the next two years whether that be Brohm or Medina. Otherwise I'd rather not bother.
