It's a weird argument you're making. In that, if they had spent more money in some of those years, they would have been more contenders. So you're using their lack of effort to contend as an excuse to not spend, so they can contend. It's a big circle jerk. And honestly, which big market owners are so frugile? New York, SF, LA and Chicago are the big 4 cities where owners should be top 10 or damn close every year. Is Jerry a bigger spender than any of those owners? Those are the teams he should be spending neck and neck with - the Dodgers, Giants, Angels, Mets, Yankees and Cubs.

What is a contention winner? lol You've spun this conversation around since you lost the debate about Jerry's spending. I actually don't disagree if someone were to say the Sox could win the World Series if a bunch of things fall right. That doesn't mean the rebuild wasnt in a better position a couple years ago. Their time to really spend was several years ago. For example - IMO - signing Bryce Harper when he was a free agent and practically begging for a team to pay him, would have been a more impactful move than even signing Aaron Judge this winter would be. There would have been more benefit at the previous point in time, while you still had Giolito's prime, it was before Moncada's decline, etc.

Wait - in every decade they've had a top payroll once out of those 10 years? Are you even serious here? Do you understand Chicago is a big market? They should have a top 5 payroll more often than not. And they should be in the top 10 every year.
-
Are you Jerry on a burner account? 2 big free agent splashes in 42 years as owner, and the last one was 26 years ago. And none in this big rebuild contention window, which is pretty much agreed by most to be over the hump on its way down now. We all love our White Sox. But we have a cheapskate owner who has proven that for 4+ decades. It is what it is.

Can we change the title to 'Rick Hahn resigned'...just for fun?
-
IMO Clevinger slots as one of the top 5th starters in baseball. There's an awful lot of upside here now that he's 2 years out from TJS. That said, yes the staff is a bit shaky in the health department and Hahn really needs to come through with better depth than he has in recent years.
-
Yep and Josh Naylor alone has done way more than either Madrigal or Dunning.
-
Or maybe he wants to play on a contender where he has the chance to stick it to Cleveland? If offers were similar, that could have tilted him slightly to the Sox? Just spitballing.

I don't want to speak for the other poster you quoted. But someone predicting that 2 players who were better than Giolito in 22 will be better than him again in 23 isn't really hate or even going that far out on a limb.
-
Seeing how the rest of his career played out, that was a good decision . And he probably cost the Sox a World Series title in 93 with his God awful performance against Toronto.
-
I'd be good with this. It's a typical White Sox move. They buy high on relievers and utility infielders, and buy low on most everything else. If this happens, hopefully it works again like it did with Cueto

If we had a serious big market owner, the move to make would be moving Anderson to RF and then signing one of the big name shortstops. But we have Jerry.
-
Kepler has had some huge games against the Sox, so it probably feels like he is better than he really is. Cant imagine the Sox and Twins trading though, especially while they both hope to win the division.
-
It would be a very KW-like signing. But I doubt they can fit him in to their reduced payroll.

A lot of guys are coming off career worst years or close to it, whether by performance, health or both. Some won't improve. I think some will. If it exceeds a logically expected outcome, some real good things can happen here. I also think the removal of Menechino and La Russa will be a big boost. As bad as last year felt in so many different ways, they still were a .500 team. Every year we see teams make a big jump. The Sox don't even have that big of a jump to make. They're already a .500 team when pretty much everything under the sun went wrong (except Cease). Again, I'm not saying it's likely. But it's not even likely for the favorite. This team absolutely can win the World Series.
-
I've seen you say this at least twice in this thread. You should know better than to say that. I'm not saying it's likely. But if a couple of these rebuild guys finally get their s%*# together and blow up, this team could be world beaters.

I'm not an expert on Dodger prospects, but isn't Outman considered more of a potential bench or platoon player.... than a guy we would trade one of the top closers in baseball for?
-
Eh, as competitive as possible, while slashing payroll to satisfy Reinsdorf's bank account.
-
This would be a very Kenny Williams-like move. Get a former star for pennies on the dollar when their value is smashed, and pray their former self returns (which it wouldn't in this case).

Only 35 AB's and he came right up from Birmingham. You can't really hold that against him. -

It's nice to see Reinsdorf is going all-in in his final stretch as White Sox owner. *rolls eyes* -
Interesting and it makes sense since Reinsdorf grew up a Brooklyn Dodgers fan. Too bad he didn't buy the Dodgers instead of the Sox.
