GM Meetings Thread: MLB Rumors and Elaborate Boras Metaphors
WestEddy replied to bmags's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Crawford is #77, Miller is #90 on MLB's top 100 prospects list. -
I sure don't want to enjoy winning.
-
I think by that time, the Cubs were clearing out their classis 60's lineup. Beckert, Santo, Williams, Hundley, Jenkins, Kessinger, Banks retired, they traded Kenny Holtzman, for reasons. It was a good time to jump ship.

Maybe he replaces the concept of Andrew Vaughn? -

I have no idea who this guy is. But I'm starved for anybody to start naming names. -

I'm not sure what Gurriel would do. Play 2nd? Does this portend an Eloy trade? -
Laz Rivera and Luis Mieses are two long time Sox prospects who never put it together. Victor Reyes would have been better than Colas or Sheets.

GM Meetings Thread: MLB Rumors and Elaborate Boras Metaphors

I sure don't think Bellinger is worth an Aaron Judge deal, or even a Bryce Harper deal. He fell off a cliff for a couple of years with the Dodgers. -
You're probably even grabbing a bullpen arm or 2 WAR OF with 3-4 years of control in that package. A team would literally have to send their top 2 prospects, and 2-3 more from their top 10.

Moncada still has that $5 million buyout for '25.
-
I find no problem with his remarks. Imagine going to a play, and the actors have to stop every 6 lines, and do interviews. He's got to say something.

The most important job of batting coach, from my recollection, is to have the balls to smash the PlayStation in the clubhouse with a baseball bat, and chase the hitters into the batting cages. If Marcus can do that, he's aces.
-
Why would giving him a chance to pitch on a competitive team in the pennant run stretch be a reason for him to be angry? I get that every single event must be couched in the most anti-White Sox theories imaginable. He kept his head down (most of the time), and just pitched. I can see someone taking a flier on a strong #3-4 rotation arm.

We all wanted the Sox to go outside the organization, they went outside the organization. We screamed about Royal connections, they're signing coaches without Royal connections. It all seems like a plan. edit - and once Thames left the Yankees after 2022, their hitting fell off a cliff. I like it.

State of the Sox: Obvious to Everyone
WestEddy replied to MysterySource5000's topic in Pale Hose Talk
They're clearly in a rebuild. I'm not saddened by Getz's moves, so far. Pretty much everyone is expecting Getz to grab 2-3 bounce back candidates, and load up AAA for the rotation. We're already settling for Andrus as our SS, and letting it ride with Lenyn Sosa at 2B. I'm actually curious for the first time in a couple of years what path the Sox are going to take. Blow it up, or patch in a couple of rookies who failed in their 1st or 2nd tries? -
I actually think they should bring back Ureña. Dude had 5 strong starts. Touki and Scholtens looked lucky.
-
Can't say I'm unhappy. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/11/mike-clevinger-declines-option-with-white-sox.html

I would take a full-season flier on Ureña. He was more consistent than Touki or Jesse Scholtens.

Paul Janish Hired as Director of Player Development
WestEddy replied to DirtySox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I thought it was pretty well established when Chris Getz came to the Sox front office that "assistant director of player development" was as close to entry level as one can be. Maybe Barfield was big on this guy, and saw him as someone to mold in his own image. -
If Rick Hahn was made GM, took a garbage, gutted organization, and made the playoffs 2 of his first 3 years, yes, I would be impressed with that GM. He didn't do that. I think most expectations of nadir to contention timelines are 5 years. I believe Kim Ng is at least an average GM. She has a great resume, and yes, that is an accomplishment. I don't care that 40% of the teams make the playoffs. Making the playoffs and being out after 2 games is better than not making the playoffs. And doing it with the Marlins is impressive. It's not my job to make anybody admit that.
-
No, you moved the goalposts. She took a s%*# team and made the playoffs, with a final push of two acquired bats at the deadline. But somehow, now making the postseason bores you. She took over garbage, and turned it into a wild card in 3 years. Again, tell us who would have done better. Assuming, of course, that somebody is revamping the amateur and professional scouting departments, development, all of that, which again, I'm guessing all can be turned around in 3 years or less. Please tell us how that's done, and who in baseball could do it. I can't wait until girls are inspired by Kim Ng to post drivel on chatboards.
-
I thought the story behind that trade was that we needed a proven, veteran arm that the pitching coach could straighten out, it was still June, and most teams weren't sure what they were doing, yet. San Diego, with their sucky albatross, was an obvious mark. However, Tatis had just been signed, and Hahn had claimed he barely knew what they had.
-
So tell me, who is the baseball person you think walks into the White Sox job, and immediately turns this into a 100 win team 2 of the next 3 years that also wins (at least) the AL pennant twice by 2026? If you think anybody could have walked into Miami and did what Kim Ng did, you must think the White Sox can blow away the AL next year with the perfect configuration of moves. The Marlins were that kind of suck when she took over the job. And their owner isn't some Mark Cuban or Ray Davis, free-spending owner. He's a cheap-ass micromanager. I'm really curious.

While Mike Shirley's drafts seem to have produced players who are showing promise in their development, I can't imagine that Nick Hostetler missed on so many players. It seems to me that development took a leap forward in the last few years, with guys like Terrell Tatum (#16 - 2021), and Turner/Elko/Burke (#9, 10, 11 in 2022) making their year's drafts actually look deep. I really try not to get too deep into the "why did Hahn and KW get fired" discussions, but I wonder if complaints had been filtering up for years about the toxic environment that undermined any serious stab at moving the organization forward in scouting, acquisition and development.
