Yep. And that’s why there’s not many ways this could play out where we don’t end up with one of the two whales.

2018-9 MLB off season free agency thread
SoxBlanco replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It would be nice to have that stellar back end of the pen, but any more additions would really take away reps from the young guys. We need to see what they’re capable of this year. -
Do you know somebody with connections to the Sox?
-
We should have signed him for 15 years at $1.5 billion. We’d still avoid the luxury tax, right?
-
I am a huge Moncada supporter and I think he will continue to get better, but one thing I never do to defend him is point to the amount of times he struck out on questionable calls. When you take that many close pitches with two strikes, you are bound to lead the league in the amount of times you get rung up when the pitch is actually a ball.

FS: Luis Basabe, Sooner rather than Later
SoxBlanco replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
To piggyback off this, take a look at Micker Adolfo. Here were his K rates the last three years: 2016 in Kanny: 33.2% 2017 in Kanny: 31.5% 2018 in W.S.: 27.4% He has been decreasing his K rate the past three years, and that even included being bumped to a higher level. I think K rate can definitely be improved, especially when talking about a really young player. I don't think Basabe will automatically have a higher K rate as he rises to the next level. -
Burger, Sheets, Collins, or one of our outfielders could end up there.

I’ve been confident ever since we signed Alonso and Jay. I think Manny has chosen us (in his mind, at least), and at this point it’s all about getting a better deal than we are offering.
-
Let’s say we knew for sure it was a Sox hat. How would that affect everyone’s confidence that he will sign with us? I’m pretty confident we will get him anyway, so I’m not sure how much this would move the needle for me.

7 for $175 is not a false report because more people are claiming it's false. It's false because it makes zero sense.
-
Not really. If Manny ends up signing a bigger deal, they can just claim that at the time, 7 for $175 was the offer.

Good analysis. What I've always wondered is how does somebody like Boras leak info about the Manny/White Sox negotiations? If Boras calls up Buster Olney to start the leak, does Buster really just run with it and assume Boras is telling the truth when he's not even involved in the negotiations? Same with the Phillies. Why would any reporter believe their leak when the information is about the White Sox and Manny? Is the answer as simple as, "well, reporters crave information and badly want to be the one to break news these days that they will believe anything."?

We gotta keep that whale updates thread updated.
-
Based on all the smoke, at that point in time five days ago, he thought it would be over by today. But he didn’t have any inside source about that. It was just his guess. Now he’s guessing that this may drag on for awhile.

0.5 years for $20 million. Shatters the AAV record.
-
And what if the Sox have already offered $250 (either through a formal offer or informal conversation)?
-
Why do I feel like I read this exact post a while ago? Is this thread turning into the matrix? Or maybe like one of those never-ending staircases?
-
8 for $275 just makes too much sense. Very high AAV, and yet the Sox manage to stay under $300. Also, Lozano comes out looking great because he was able to get the offer raised by $100 million, even when not many teams were interested.
-
Ok, and then what happens when they get back to them? Probably the same conversation that I joked about.
-
And then what does that call sound like? Padres: Hey Lozano, I heard the highest offer is for only $25 million per year. We'd like to enter the bidding. Lozano: Actually, another team is willing to go 8 for $250 right now. Can you beat that? Padres: No Lozano: Ok, bye.
-
I don't believe the Sox offer has shrunk. You don't believe that, do you?
-
I want to believe this, but why would somebody who works directly with the big boss be letting it out that Manny to the Sox is pretty much a done deal?
-
There is no chance that the Sox were never really in the running because of insultingly low offers. Zero point zero percent chance.
-
At least.
