Are you saying that if we find out we did have an offer out to Bauer but it wasn't enough, we shouldn't post that information here? Or when we found out Joc turned down our original offer...should we not have discussed that here because it didn't matter at that point?

Do you think we haven't even discussed a creative offer with him?

I'd be more worried about not sticking to the plan if our bullpen wasn't so stacked. No reason to use him in high leverage situations all the time when you have the horses we have in the pen.

His innings amount this year will be the same this year regardless of whether he pitches them in the bullpen or in AA as a starter. It doesn't matter how he gets there, so either way, he'll be in the exact same boat come 2022. That's why I want him to work with our major league coaches out of the pen.

This is flat-out wrong. You definitely can get to 80-100 innings while pitching out of the bullpen for a full year. You can't look at history and see how many guys around baseball hit that mark from the bullpen because those other guys aren't in the same boat. If a plan is put in place for Crochet, they will get him to that innings number.

If Crochet is a multi-inning reliever, then he can enter the game in a variety of situations. Some of his appearances might be high leverage, but some might be in a 10-1 game in the 6th inning. That's the perfect opportunity to work on a third pitch. Also, I don't think a regular schedule matters this year. I believe @ptatc has pointed out that for this year, it doesn't matter how he gets to his ~100 innings. I don't think he's going to be any better off come spring training 2022 if he built up his innings on a regular schedule this year. Look, I completely understand both sides of the argument, and I wouldn't be upset if he started in AA. I just don't understand how people can say this is such a stupid move when it seems more like a decision that could go either way.

Doesn’t sound stupid to me. Build up his innings while getting to work with Katz and contributing to the big league team. But I guess there’s no reason to rehash this argument. As I’ve pointed out throughout this thread, I agree with what the Sox are doing with Crochet. It’s such a unique situation because there aren’t guys like him with such a small amount of innings in previous years. Both options have advantages and disadvantages, but I prefer him working with our big league coaches to build up to 90-100 innings.

Most depressing part of this thread is the realization that we only have Engel for three more years. We’re screwed starting in 2024.

The reason I think Vaughn will struggle less than most rookies is because of his approach at the plate. He's not a guy who will just keep chasing sliders away when he first comes up (Eloy, Robert, etc.). Even in the intrasquad games that were televised last year, I remember constantly thinking, "Wow, this guy puts up a professional at-bat every time up there."

We had black holes in RF and DH in 2020, and we didn't have anybody we could trust to start game 3 of the playoff series. Adding Lynn automatically makes the 2021 team better. I'm not really sure how this is even a question. Nobody can compare the 2020 and 2021 rosters and say that 2020 was better. It's not even close.
