They had great teams 69-71 but just one title thanks in part to the Amazin' Mets. Won 107-108-101 games in that stretch.
Except for Jim Palmer the young pitchers would start in the back of the pen and have to earn every inning.
I grew up with the Oriole way via the AAA Rochester Red Wings. They were not my MLB team but deepest respect. Frank and Earl Weaver were the two main symbols of that style.
We can assume Manchado wants 10/300 so maybe the Sox should step up and offer 9/270. Even so he might wait until ST is well under way before making a deal.
We should get a good clue about Manuel B in April since he has to make the team in order to stay with the Sox. That one scout really went to bat for him. Hopefully will not remind anyone of Felipe Paulino.
AJ was all about hustle and competition. Ozzie said you don't hate AJ quite as much if he is on your own team Yes he could be offensive more like a Bill Belichick but the result was winning.
Imagine Manchado onboard, Eloy stepping up, Jose being healthy and Polka dotting HR balls. That would be fun to watch even if it was repeated every day like Sonny and Cher on your clock radio.
The pitching could be significant when you are down to your last man in the pen but have another guy on the bench who could save your skin. When you go with 13 pitchers something has to give.
Has there been any hint that the Sox are in Harpo's financial range?? My inside sources are skeptical. Nor have we heard of any interest in his playing for the Second Sox. Just my take but it seems he really wants the big bucks. Not to mention his difficult agent.
Nice write up in SSS on Walker who was part of the recent DR bonding tour. Has a smooth LH swing but described as explosive. Likes to play CF. Played at three levels but struggled at K-town with oblique and hamstring injuries. Does not sound like he would start at WS from what I gathered. Could prove to be a force in the Sally League and take it from there. That first season for top college picks is a real whirlwind with all the changes and bouncing around.
I feel like we have all been strung along by this process and manipulated. Maybe the teams should say we will make an offer Feb 1 and withdraw it by Feb 15. I don't take sides in the players v owners struggle but am starting to dislike the agents.
With all the media choices to be surfing at home and esp replays I get really restless when I attend games. Plus I don't like beer. I get really p.o.'d when they don't show replays at the park. It seems kind of insulting. Making the games longer and the tedious bullpen usage has not helped. The Sox are the only team I regularly follow.
They Sox are not likely to let Gio go but if he struggles this year he is likely demoted to the pen to figure out it out with the other guys like Fulmer.
