Offseason Part 3 - Because Part 2 Was a Dud
SoCalChiSox replied to CentralChamps21's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Do something, Rick. Cueto isn't something. -
I think the primary issue is we need to make a truly meaningful move to strengthen the rotation. Lynn going down and the Tigers adding a savage only makes the need more acute. Adding Cueto is not a meaningful move. It's trying to put lipstick on a pig. Its still a pig and the lipstick doesn't fool anyone. It doesn't transform the pig into a supermodel. Even McGuire isn't going to fap to that. These aren't the moves a "World Series contender" should be making. It's garbage. Why would we waste anything on someone who has to get stretched out for awhile in the minors first? Don't we need to replace Lynn's April and May innings from the getgo so the BP doesn't get exhausted and/or we don't get in a situation where you are conceding games twice a week with DK and ReyLo/VV? And it is a waste of money since it's been obvious for awhile that we are financially tapped out so each dollar is precious. And then I hear "well you guys would be pissed if you saw what it would take to get a good pitcher on the trade market". Well, whose fault is it that the farm is a desolate wasteland where making any kind of big move would be painful? The teams fault for failing to draft or develop properly. They didn't want to take back salary so we could get Meadows and now he's with a rival. They can't develop well so our offers suck for pitching. It's their fault on both fronts. Want to know when the bitching will stop? When either they are a) tearing thru the schedule at a 95-100 win pace with even the current roster or when b) they make meaningful additions by taking on more salary obligations or c) they swindle someone for a really good SP and the cost somehow doesn't hurt at all. In other words don't hold your breath. The bitching will continue and in fact escalate exponentially until everything is smiles, cupcakes, rainbows AND unicorns. This is supposed to be our fucking window.

4.2m isn't nothing when we're already damn near close to maxed out. If you believe reports that we could not spend until we got Kimbrel off the books and the FO had to basically use the savings to swap in Pollocks salary, that means Cueto just ate 4.2m of the 6m net savings. So we're basically sitting with less than 2m left to use. If there are any other major injuries the Sox have will have to either sacrifice significant pieces of an otherwise desolate farm system or they'll watch helplessly as the rest of the Central closes in on what should have been a cakewalk division title again. I'm glad he cost us "nothing", tho... More cheap filler crap. They're trying to plug leaks in the bottom of a boat with bubble gum.
-
If he can't pitch for weeks what's the point? Isn't he supposed to be a short term bridge?
-
Weak. So much for the "quality" SP Stone mentioned. This is crap. The division will be tight all year.
-
Lulz at our inability to get this LH savage all offseason and the Tigers just get him on the eve of the season. Lol They will need to snag a legit 2/3 SP to hold onto the division now. Any scrub won't do
-
Which Sox-affiliated weddings is Madrigal showing up at? And poppysox wedding doesn't count.
-
Doesn't paddack have only 2 pitches? Might be tough to be a quality starter with a limited arsenal. I think that's a big contract to swallow for Paddack. If it were both him and Gore maybe, but I thought I read they weren't moving Gore.
-
Yeah that's what I assumed. Not sure why anyone would want him, unless Sox ate most of the 18m, which would still open up some more savings on a net basis.
-
Thanks for the recap of his comments. It's a double edged sword there. Stone isn't talking about any starter he is saying quality which means it will be costly, esp since teams know we dont have much leverage right now with that Lynn injury. I'm bracing myself for a painful trade.
-
Just get on the phone with PIT for Q. It shouldn't cost much. Slot him in at 4. 5th can be a combo of ReyLo and DK, with hopefully each giving us 3 innings so we can turn it over to the BP after that. It's not ideal but they're going to have to get by on bubble gum, shoestring and paper clips for awhile.
-
That would be fine for 2m. He's prolly more valuable to PIT tho at that salary. Adolfo for Q?
-
Hosmers value is -50m. Paddock is about 17m. SD would have to throw in alot of money and prolly add another good piece too to balance it out.

Lance Lynn has slight tendon tear, 4 weeks no throwing off mound

Then forget him. No haul for a one year rental. Hell no. -

The first might be OK if paired with an immediate extension. If not, forget it. No to the other 2. -
Colas prolly too
-
Given the precarious nature of Robert, Jimenez and Pollock's health, I don't think Engel should be moved. He will definitely be needed here.
-
I wonder if we sent him off and ate 10 of the 18m someone would take him at 8m for a scrub prospect? That would help to pay the new SP salary for 2022 on a net basis.

I really don't want to give up Sheets, Ramos and Thompson in what fathom was suggesting. Ramos could be very valuable by the deadline and actually could be the future 2B not too long from now.
