  1. I don't remember it that way. I know the Sox took a big hit in attendance and the fan backlash was intense. It led to Ozzie Guillen's famous "we don't owe the fans anything" remark. Guillen said he was responding to fans yelling racial taunts at Frank Thomas. Some fans also thought that Thomas was a hypocrite for using non-union labor to build a home. MLB loved it when Sosa and McGwire had their home run race. The sport needed something there was damage being done to the golden goose. The players and the owners completely misjudged fan reaction. The late 90's were a very dark time, especially for the White Sox.
  2. You can't make any assumption about the election. Five months is a long time. But here is my real point: In 1968, Eugene McCarthy ran for president to challenge Lyndon Johnson on Vietnam. In 1974, Barry Goldwater went to the White House and told Nixon to resign. There is a time to challenge the leadership of a party. They can say something; they just won't.
  3. One sick thing about this is GOP senators refusing to even give a no comment when asked about tear-gassing peaceful protestors so Trump can have a photo op. They know that their leader has failed to handle this crisis and they won't say one word about it. And the mere idea of using the military to police citizens is one other thing they know is wrong. And they won't say a word about that, either.
  4. There is no doubt that a bad result of the protests is the spreading of the virus. Another thing that is certain is that this problem has been festering for a long time. It's long over due for addressing law enforcement problems in this country that include racism and abuse of the authority. Yes, address the problems, and don't push a 75 year-old man to the ground and then stop a fellow officer from helping him.
  5. I agree with the partisan messaging. There has to be times when politics has to be put aside. And if this isn't it, when would it be? The political system is failing us big time. As I have said in other posts, this is so much bigger than Trump and Biden or any other leader. Only too many are not acting like leaders.
  6. It really isn't all that hard. Wearing mask is not intrusive. Some people came to my house to do some repair work. They wore a mask. Not a big deal. And I would not have let them in without a mask. I can't control what goes on in public; I will control what goes on in my own home.
  7. My wife went through a Wendy's drive through. The guy in the window had a mask hanging over his neck but didn't have his face covered. When my wife complained to the manager, the manager got nasty. The fitness center in my town opened up yesterday. I went today. The room wasn't crowded, but half didn't wear masks. When I left there were only four of us; I was the only one with a mask. I was glad I never got near anyone. I don't understand people not wearing masks. It is not a politically correct thing, and it is not intrusive. This is insane.
  8. If they can play at all, all I am concerned about is containing the virus and letting players get some live action. I don't care about a World Series or anything else. This not like any other season. It can't be compared to any other year. Although I doubt any games can be played without having to shut down once more.
  9. I want no part of it. Alexei put very little effort out there, and was not a smart player. Go away.
  10. Our political climate has always been on the toxic side, but we are now hitting new lows. If there was ever a time for bi-partisanship, it is now. But it isn't happening. The Democrats have their issues, but most of this starts with Trump and his constant abusing his executive powers. Key leaders of both parties should bi-pass Trump and Biden, and try to come up with ways to unite the country and cope with this crisis. We need some long-term thinking. The hell with November. I drove past a school in my town and saw a long line of cars heading into the parking lot. I wondered why since school has been out for so long. People were picking up food. I don't live in a high-income area, but the town is not considered poor by any means. But here were people looking for food. Nothing worth a crap is happening in Washington. To hell with Trump and to hell with Biden. It's time responsible leaders really do something.
  11. Greg is small potatoes compared to Trump. Again, Trump is accusing critic Joe Scarborough of murdering one of his staff. Trump is calling it a "cold case." The woman died in one of Scarborough's congressional offices when she had some kind of heart trauma, fell and hit her head. It is not a cold case. The coroner established there was no crime here. We are in the middle of a huge crisis and all Trump can do is get even with adversaries. More deaths are on the way and they won't be "cold cases." Right now, Trump has no credibility regarding this crisis, not that he ever did. Another wave is predicted. Will be we better prepared this time? Will there be enough PPEs? Enough space in ICUs? Trump doesn't seem all that concerned. Instead, he is causing pain for a widower who still misses his wife.
  12. I don't know what Greg really believes, but I don't care if his hair is too long or that he doesn't like wearing a mask. All I know is that the country is going through hell right now. That is one thing I can say for certain. And there are people who are trying to help, or at least trying to adapt the best way they can. And then there are those who in denial and remain in denial no matter how high the death count goes.
  13. Why am I not surprised? Both, that he wasn' t in church and that he was on the golf course. He is such a fine Christian.
  14. This is so true. If people are so god-fearing, you'd think they would be concerned about the welfare of others. The congregation in my wife's church want to return, but not under these circumstances. A group of them also had a meeting online to talk over church matters, and they accomplished somethings. They are more than willing to give things a little more time. They just don't think the risk is worth it right now. Makes sense to me.
  15. In seeing how he said this, I didn't think it sounded as bad as some thought. However, it was still a dumb ass thing to say, and he never should have went there. One pundit said that this was another indication that Biden still doesn't know how to reach out to African-Americans. Regardless, more Biden gaffes are on the way.
  16. yi Why does he want to override them on this issue when he has been deferring to governors for so long? Does he even have the authority to do this? This is so phony, it reeks. At my wife's church, no one wants to return yet. So many of the congregation is over 60. I guess they don't feel like dying when the service is already streamed.
  17. The fact that he is even saying that he is taking it is highly irresponsible. The drug has side affects and there is no indication that it cures or helps anything. Besides, if it was this simple, infected people would be taking it and wouldn't be dying by the tens of thousands. It is another example of Trump saying there is a simple solution when there isn't. Yes, there will be so much winning. It is absurd this man has an excellent chance to get re-elected.
  18. Yesterday was the first day in our county where there were no Covid deaths reported in the last two weeks. I'll take any good news I can get. I am now waiting for Jared to announce what a great success he is.
  19. Caulfield is really right about one thing: Winning elections is one thing, actually governing is another. The media swooned about Trump and his campaign strategy, but didn't stop to think if he could govern. And at this point, we needed the government to truly step forward and it didn't. Trump isn't the only one. Too many worry about consolidating and holding onto power. Then a crisis like this happens, and they're still playing politics. Meanwhile, people continue to die.
  20. While I don't have sympathy for people not wearing masks, I have plenty sympathy for people up against it economics-wise. But I don't see how pressuring workers to return to infested meat packing plants is the answer. Normal economic policy is not the answer. I don't know what the answer is, but we are not coming close to getting answers from Washington. These problems are huge, and the people there are small-minded.
  21. You are right. These people are crazy. And there was dumb ass Jared speculating about the country not having an election so his father-in-law can be installed as dictator. And the country is worrying about social distancing and wearing a mask? Meanwhile, while the country is really facing it, Trump is using the power of his office to get even with Obama. There is no Obamagate. And even it there were, corruption is not something Trump is concerned about. He is holding a grudge, and he is not letting go. We don't need this nonsense. All energies should be focused on this country's future and saving lives. But while people are waving guns to protect their rights, Trump is attempting to put his political opponents in jail while he sets his felony committing buddies free. Just who is the dictator? Want to open up? Stop the spread of the virus and we will open. But I know I am not going to any bar or restaurant until I am certain things are at least relatively safe. I'd like to live if some people don't mind.
  22. I agree, but also they don't seem to even give a fuck about themselves. The fact that they don't want to do something that isn't even intrusive is beyond me. If things start opening more, I will still stay at home. I am not going near these people. If they want to die, that is up to them.
  23. All of this more than concerning. It's not like the 79-year old Fauci is attempting to further his career. He already has had a great career. He is a mild-mannered man trying to warn the public of real dangers. There is nothing wrong with challenging his opinions. Debate is healthy. Meanwhile things are getting worse. Instead of being in this together, we have to watch out for ourselves. The noise level has to go down if we are going to turn things around.
  24. I have zero sympathy as well. And let's forget the idiot congressman who went walking around the Capitol wearing a gas mask to make fun of the situation. Then he ends up getting the virus. No, things will not return to normal because a person refuses to wear a mask. No, that is not a political statement. It starts at the top with Trump. He could help put an end to this nonsense by putting a cloth over his disgusting face. Now that would be a political statement.
  25. Hey Greg - I don't wear a mask because I'm a proud leftist. I wear a mask because I don't want to be exposed to a lethal disease. I don't criticize Trump for the sake of criticizing him. I fear for the country, and I think he doesn't have a clue. I think the current paranoia is giving conspiracies a bad name. For example, I think there was a conspiracy to assassinate President Kennedy. I don't think there has been any conspiracy behind this crisis. Sometimes things are what they seem to be. You are right about one thing: We are not in this together, and that starts right at the top. And you may be right about something else: Trump may win re-election. But that is because many don't want to hear the truth. They prefer his lies. If I was president I would have consulted with everyone of every political stripe and all the medical experts I could find. I'd talk to as many foreign leaders as I could to see what was going on in their countries. Winning re-election would mean nothing to me if hundreds of thousands died on my watch. And I wouldn't divide the country.
