Al Kaline dies at 85 - HOF Detroit Tigers OF
NWINFan replied to knightni's topic in The Diamond Club
A really great player who did the small but important things well. Was a member of the memorable 1968 World Series winning Detroit Tigers. Great right fielder. -
Here is what is ticks me off. When the Flint situation happened, the Michigan governor should have moved heaven and earth to solve the problem. He didn't. When this crisis began, Trump should have moved heaven and earth to at least address the problem and he didn't. I don't have a whole lot of admiration for politicians, but for once I'd like to see them act like human beings. How about this for a change? Instead of a person with perceived charisma, why don't we elect someone who cares? At least a little bit.

I am personally getting sick of this crap, especially now. This is not a time for settling scores. I would imagine many other media sources are seeing a decrease in advertising. Is he happy about that, too? How many people is this hurting? This man kicks people when they're down. He is totally unlikable. The only fake news comes from his press briefings, and his constant spreading of misinformation only makes things worse. Are all these deaths fake news, too?

The federal government's response to this has been abysmal. There has been plenty of denial, lack of urgency, and almost no competence. It is still abysmal. It is not just disturbing; it is outrageous. And the idiots who ranted about hoaxes should crawl into a hole and never come out. We've lost valuable time, and people died as a result. Trump has his nerve running for re-election. He should be resigning.
-
Yet, some people are still in denial. About the graveness of anything and about the president with no clothes. I saw a stat of people recovered and it put the number close to 9,000. It is nice to get some good news.

I agree that the press conferences should not be live events. Trump just looks totally inept and out of touch. He also attempts to use them for political gain, and no politician should profit from this crisis. But, in the end, the press conferences give little news. We would be better off with summaries. I don't need to watch Trump bumble his way through another lame public statement that serves no purpose.

This is what I find amazing about this crisis: No matter how polarized the country has been and is, we should have had an easy time agreeing that this is the most dire crisis we have faced in the history of our country. Instead, we get talk about hoaxes and conspiracies and speculation that is okay if older people die to save the economy. I keep hearing that "we are all in this together." I don't think that's true yet. And that's really scary.

Ron Paul and his son Rand are the two biggest idiots ever to be elected to Congress. This is not a hoax, people are not dying to make Trump look bad, and it is time Trump finally utilizes the full power of the federal government to fight this thing. It was also help if right-wing pundits and bloggers would just shut the fuck up.

The amazing yet typical thing about the perfect ninth inning is that it only took four minutes.

If the season is lost, how will it affect players?
NWINFan replied to Jack Parkman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I agree that the season is over. I think it would hurt the players if they went a long time with no live action. I am hoping some live action without fans can happen. But since I am far from a medical expert, I don't know how bad things will get, and if any live action is possible. Otherwise, speculating about this drives me crazy. It would be great to get some good news for a change. -
There are some that claim there is too much alarmism. Yet, Mitch McConnell was joking about it at news conference, saying he had been through things like this before. No, Mitch, we haven't been through anything like this before. Alarmism? How about denial big time? This is no hoax. It is a tragedy of huge proportions.

Not to sound like a whiner, but over the years, the White Sox has hit some bad luck. Of course, some of it was self-inflicted. In the 1972, the team had acquired Dick Allen during the off-season and looked forward to a great year. They expected a home opening crowd approaching 50,000. Then there was a labor lockout, and the season was postponed. Their home opener ended up being on a cold April night and the crowd wasn't near 50,000. In 1982, they had another good off-season, and this time the opener was snowed out. It looked like January not April. In 1994, the team had at least a decent chance of going to the World Series, and we all know what the strike did to that. Now the most serious setback in 2020. There's nothing like history repeating itself.

I believe we have to take this seriously and quit with the denials. However, I also saw an example of overreaction and panic at my hometown grocery store this morning. There is nothing wrong with stocking up some, but this was absurd. People had their carts over filled. The store had to put a limit on purchasing toilet paper. (Although I can't blame people for stocking up on that.) The point is people were hoarding when I don't see a reason to. To my knowledge, there has been no concerns about grocery stores not getting merchandise. I figured I would have least a two-hour wait to get to check out. I didn't have that much, and it wasn't completely essential, so I put everything back and left without buying anything. Another reason I left is that some idiot in front of me was espousing conspiracy theories and I felt my blood pressure spike. I'm old enough to remember the energy shortages of the 1970s. Tensions ran high, and there was violence in gas station lines. We don't need a repeat of that. I'm all for what major league sports is doing at the moment, and I am for other safety measures. But we need a real national discussion so we can cope with the danger of this crisis. What was happening at the store was insane. If people overbuy, they are depriving others of buying. And it wasn't really good to have a huge crowd in that contained space. One more thing: present day conspiracy theories are giving other viable conspiracy theories a bad name. That's frustrating.

I'll tell you what is preposterous: Our government sitting on its ass doing nothing when there were signs of a medical crisis on the way. As far as the MDs in your family: there are plenty of medical experts who disagree with them. And I'll tell you what is really absurd: a congressman went around wearing a gas mask to make fun of it all and now he has been exposed to it. Now that is absurd. Over 40 people are dead over a short period of time with more on the way. Just what to do you expect to learn?

You're right. This is going to be a shit show. There are more important things than baseball, but it is still a vital part of our culture. It is facing a real crisis just as the rest of the country is. More than ever we need to be a united country and world right now. No one can run from this thing. And, yes, it is very painful to not have baseball in the spring.
-
Perhaps they could play during the summer months since the virus is supposed to be negated by warm weather. Get the playoffs and Series over before the cold weather returns. Not a perfect solution by any means, but perhaps we can have some baseball. Regardless, I don't see a 162 or 154-game schedule being played.
-
There are more important things than sports. This crisis is worse right now because short sighted people didn't take it seriously. I don't like the idea of empty stadiums, but that may be a price we have to pay for a short time. As for me, regardless of the MLB's decisions, I will wait until warmer weather until I go to a game. At least the conditions will be better. And I don't care about percentages of getting the disease. If you should be a person who gets it, you wouldn't give a shit about percentages. Right now baseball is not all that important. The state of our country is.

2019-2020 Official NBA Thread
NWINFan replied to Bananarchy's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I don't know how anyone can be a Bulls fan right now. The team has spent the last generation losing. Of course the 90s were great but any fan in his or her mid-twenties doesn't know what that's like. -
What I feel good about is that I have expectations. Haven't had those in a while.

I hate it when the Sox lose to the Cubs and love it when they win. But I agree with IWriteCode. The novelty has worn off of the Crosstown Series. I really believe that the rivalry between the two teams is off the field, not on. I just don't see the point of getting all wound up over a handful of games during a 162-game season. Back in 1999, the Sox swept the Cubs in a three-game series at Wrigley, and we Sox fans gloated. Then the Sox played under .500 for the rest of the season. That puts things in perspective. Meanwhile, I am more concerned about the Sox finally turning things around than anything the Cubs are doing although I would like to see that Disneyland venture collapse.

Sox Payroll Redux. Why did the Spending Stop ?
NWINFan replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I am pleased with the off season and am looking forward to the 2020 campaign. I only wonder what the long-term planning is for the franchise. Does the FO really want to turn the club into an elite American League franchise or will they just tear down to rebuild when the time comes? How ambitious they are is not really known. JR may not be concerned about widening and expanding the fan base. The club has the opportunity to do that, but it might not be in their short-term plans. Meanwhile, the rebuild is not done yet. Young players still have to prove they can play at the major league level. Some have believed that 2020 will be a true break-out season. We will see how management responds if it is. -
I don't want this guy on the White Sox. That is all I have to say.

Most Memorable Sox Game You've Attended?
NWINFan replied to KnightsOnMintSt's topic in Pale Hose Talk
1. Opening Day 1971. White Sox won 3-2. 44, 250 were in attendance and the Sox had hoped for half that much. Place went nuts when the Sox won it in the ninth on a pinch hit by a guy named Rich McKinney. 2. Bat Day June 1972. Over 51,000 in attendance. Dick Allen won the second game of the doubleheader with a line-shot three-run homer in the left field seats. 3. June 2005. AJ won it in the ninth with an opposite field homer. Great emotion in the stands.
