Hawk Harrelson wins the Ford C. Frick Award
NWINFan replied to Thad Bosley's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Nice for Hawk, but he doesn't belong. He became a shill for Major League Baseball. -
Sox acquire Nomar Mazara for Steele Walker
NWINFan replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Grandal is a good signing, but there have been many others where the Sox are not even in the picture. But like I said, I withholding all judgement until this off season progresses more. -

I am holding all judgement until the off season progresses more. But I do have the concern that many fans have: That this franchise will never be in the position or allow to itself to be in the position to make a real play for a stud free agent. And that is something I am coming to terms with. -

Couldn't agree with you more. And his last few years were simply embarrassing. -
It's still on the early side, but I am tired of the conjecture and speculation. I will be glad when the team makes its decisions no matter what they are, and we will finally see what the 2020 team will look like. At this point, I don't care about any rumors.

Aren't the Sox more likely to be ready in 2021 than 2020?
NWINFan replied to VAfan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Yes, it was an excellent post. However, even if we temper out expectations some, there is no reason this team can't take steps to get over the .500 mark. The rebuild has made some progress. No more excuses for losing. This string of losing seasons needs to come to an end even without a trip to the post-season. -
There is very little about the Bears that is good right now. The quarterback is just part of all the multiple problems. At least Nagy knows it, because he demonstrates he has no confidence in this team. There is no reason to watch them. The season was over a long time ago.
-
Nagy needs to go, pure and simple. This team needs a leader as head coach and no way does Nagy fit that. He can take Pace with him when he leaves.

Many fans like to look at MLB in a idealized way. Players are supposed to love the game, and it is supposed to be pure competition. The industry loves to push that image, too. Unlike the 1919 Black Sox scandal, this new scandal should mean a real investigation and real action. Astro fans had to put up with years of losing, and now they have this. This was just stupid. Houston had a talented team; I don't know how much of this cheating helped them in the long run. Heads should roll.
-
You're right. Throwing the World Series is worse. But cheating to take away from the honesty of the sport is serious. I'm not naïve. There's always a certain amount of cheating in sports, but there has to be limits. Fans need to know games are as honest as possible.

Castrovince picks the White Sox to win the Central
NWINFan replied to Orlando's topic in Pale Hose Talk
You are right on two counts: The Sox have some real raw talent and there are plenty of holes. More than a manager, we need a FO to make some right decisions even though I share your doubts about the coaching staff. Regardless, predictions about the White Sox are meaningless until this off-season plays itself out. -
Most Major League GMS don't get seven straight losing seasons to prove themselves. However, I think this franchise has problems that go beyond Hahn, and I don't know much better some other GM would have done. Real decisive action should have been taken in the 2011-2012 off season and it didn't happen. The team is still paying for it. Having said all of this, I think we all know the franchise is at a real important phase. Hahn's reputation is on the line, even though I wonder how much his hands are tied. There were be no Cole or Stasberg.
-
The Bears have had bad quarterbacks in their day, but I have never seen one like Trubisky. He looks shell-shocked out there. He just doesn't appear to have any confidence. You can talk about mechanics all you want, but he doesn't find a way to believe in himself, you won't even have a so-so player.
-
I was at a SABR meeting yesterday and the Sox beat writer from the Tribune was there. He expects the Sox to be active this off-season, but he ruled out the team getting Strasburg or Cole. Although he had expected Strasberg to remain in Washington. I would be surprised if the Sox got either of these pitchers. It would be great, but I doubt it.

Tonight's game showed why Abreu can't be our 1st baseman
NWINFan replied to ron883's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I like Abreu, but I don't think being concerned about his defense is attacking him. I also want him to remain on the team. But I think many under-estimate the value of a good defensive first baseman. In the case of the White Sox, it is even more important with a developing pitching staff. If the team wants to contend, the defense must improve. -
Nagy is at least acting like a moron. His defensive attitude about the kneel only convinces me he knows made a mistake - which in a sense is no big deal. It would be better to at least admit it was possibly the wrong decision. Instead, he keeps up this attitude. This may come as a surprise to him but stubbornness is not a sign of leadership. Growing and learning from mistakes is.
-
I've seen losing coaches act a lot worse, but Nagy's explanation for the kneel down was worse than the call itself. It also shows he has no confidence in his team even to not fumble the ball. Nagy needs to go.

I say let Mitch play, have the Bears run up a horrible record, get a high draft pick and pick a real quarterback. Enough of this nonsense already. This guy reminds me of Bobby Douglass.

At this moment, the White Sox know what their rebuild looks like. It is now to move past that stage. I agree that the best way to build a team is from within. But for any team to have a successful rebuild, it will need to supplement it with trades or free agent pick-ups although I would not consider trading a vital part of the core. The White Sox can no longer use the rebuild as a reason for losing. Time to move forward.

I stopped watching after the middle of the first quarter. This team is not worth watching,

There is a small piece by Scott Merkin on the White Sox website. He seemed to think that the team was going to be very active. He echoed fans' wants such as two starting pitchers and right fielder. I don't know if that is a real indication of the organization is thinking at the moment. If they do spend money as they seem to be promising, 2020 can be a winning year. Merkin downplayed things some; he didn't believe the Sox would win it all. But if they are this active, it will truly show the team understands the importance if this off-season as you say. I know it would do a lot for my outlook.
-
Like most Sox fans, I am hoping for an active offseason. Yet, I don't have big expectations. I am sure the FO will do something, but I don't know on what scale. I find the speculation on this thread interesting, but I am in a wait and see mode. I fear, that in a relative sense, the team will do little.

Rumor: Reinsdorf aims to build second place teams
NWINFan replied to Jack Parkman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This is what is frustrating to fans. Losing teams can make money, and so why should they spend it? Then again, if that's the case, why should we go? -
Rumor: Reinsdorf aims to build second place teams
NWINFan replied to Jack Parkman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
To Reinsdorf's credit, the White Sox finally won a division in 1983. On the night they clinched, they became the first Chicago baseball team to draw over 2,000,000 in a season. Most didn't think that would happen because of the miserable springs in Chicago. And this occurred in only the third year since his group purchased the team from Bill Veeck. The Seventies had been a miserable decade for the team, and Reinsdorf and Einhorn quickly gave the team credibility. But the team bombed in the playoffs, and then quickly faded. The last half of the '80s were only slightly better than the Seventies. Reinsdorf and his group have accomplished things with the franchise. I only wish successes lasted longer. We also could have skipped the strike and the White Flag Trade. -
Rumor: Reinsdorf aims to build second place teams
NWINFan replied to Jack Parkman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Don't even bother saying this, because he won't sell. The most frustrating thing about all of this is that most fans have known full well that the White Sox have needed to change, but we have seen the same tired old faces hang around and we get the same results. Okay, I understand the idea behind a rebuild. But what makes this rebuild different than the various other ones that have happened during the last half century? Why should we really think this particular rebuild is going to work? Have people grown smarter? Are they adjusting to the way the game is changing? Is merely loading up on young talent going to lead to real winning? To tell you the truth, I'm sick of the losing and the empty promises. That much I know for sure.
