I'm surprised how many people here are saying Hinch and Luhnow are gone for good. They built an absolute juggernaut in Houston and revolutionized the way front offices approach baseball. MVP Machine is this generation's moneyball. Maybe they never get back to the top jobs, but I'd bet my neighbor's house that within three years, both are serving in some capacity for baseball teams. Luhnow in particular will be some BS "Special coordinator of the Minor Leagues" or something that allows him to overhaul a team that has fallen behind the times. EDIT: Ron already has a thread about Hinch replacing Ricky FFS

The rebuild must be coming together if Greg is posting comments I can get behind. -

Really? Personally I find "run expectancy based on the 24 base-out states" to be a very catchy name. Really rolls off the tongue. ? -

If ya'll like strand rate, checkout RE24. Basically, it measures how a pitcher changes the run expectancy and runs scored between entering and exiting. For example, if you give up a run after entering with a man on 3rd and 1 out, that is penalized less than entering with a man on 1st and 2 outs, because RE24 takes into account what the expected runs scored of the offense would be. It is still flawed - the expected runs that the model is based on only takes into account what bags are filled and how many outs there are. However, it addresses a problem with strand rate, which is that not all the scenarios of how a RP can enter the game are equal. Since strand rate is usually calculated from a pretty small sample size of outings, it is certainly possible that the degree of difficulty for those outings was demonstrably different. Last year, Steve Cishek was pretty decent with a 6.31 RE24, 46th out of qualifying RPs. This was down from his 3 previous years of 9.24, 14.72, and 10.72. FWIW, RE24 supports the perception that Bummer was a dominant fireman last year: he had an outstanding RE24 of 22.81, second best in the MLB only to Liam Hendrick's 22.89. 22.81 is also the 16th best score for a single season over the last 5 years. -
Yeah, I think we are saying we don't want possibly the worst defensive OF in the history of baseball for a marginal hitting improvement, yep. I'm pretty sure a two-man outfield of Robert and Engle would have better fielding than the Eloy/Castellanos(LOL)/Mazara OF you proposed.

I tend to agree, but as a counterpoint - we just gave up Walker, who was the 46th pick just a year and a half ago (and had played pretty well in the low minors), for 2 years of Nomar Mazara. -
Offseason has already been amazing, If the Twins miss on Donaldson and then trade for Price out of desperation, I'm putting this offseason in my spank bank.

Most people: New Year, New Me for 4 months White Sox: New Year, New Me for 4 years

Gonna be interesting to see them try to fit #350 on a jersey in 8 years

The Yelich Ozuna Stanton OF could actually be a pretty good comp if things go well for us.

I'll say this - If Springer puts up another 6+ WAR season, he probably goes over well over 110. But look at the last couple of years for 30+ year old OFers: 2016 - Yoenis Cespedes - 30 yrs old bWar last 3 seasons 4.1/6.3/3.1 - Got 110 over 4 2017 - Lorenzo Cain - 32 - 7.2/3.0/5.4 - Got 80M over 5 2018 - AJ Pollock - 31 - 0.5/3.1/2.5 - Got 60 over 5 2018 - Michael Brantley - 32 - 0/2.1/3.6 - Got 32 over 2 2018 - Andrew McCutchen - 2.5/2.0/0.8 - Got 50 over 3 2020 - Springer - 31 - 2.7/6.2/??? - ??? There are no fantastic comps here, and Springer is probably better than any of them. But if he puts up a 4 win season, I don't see him doing all that much better than Cespedes.
-
He is going to be 31 in an offseason with two stud OFS who are both younger and perhaps better (Joc v Springer could be close depending on next year). The 4/72 that article projected is way too low, but 4/90 -5/110 seems very possible, and yes affordable (even if it would be a Sox record).
-
Also, I am going to start the drum beat for Springer now. Pretty affordable, useful bat, and would play stellar D in RF for years. You can slide him to CF when Robert needs a day off. Mazara as a 4th OF vs RHP. Eloy/Robert/Springer/Mazara vs RHP is a fantastic and balanced OF.

No, I'm pretty sure it is the internet that is monitoring you. Gio, Kopech, and Cease have all had TJ already. Another one isn't quite a death sentence, but it probably ends any hope of them being top-flight starters. All these projections depend on them staying healthy, and I don't think it is unreasonable to expect at least one of them to never hit an average projection because of injury, TJ or otherwise.
-
Does losing on Wheeler end our pursuit of Joc? The latter seems heavily predicated on thinking we can make the playoffs in '20, and I don't see it without a high-end SP signing or some really great prospect/youth development luck
-
Sign Ryu, resign Rodon, keep one in bubble wrap until the other gets injured then swap. Between the two of them we'd have an excellent 200IP ?
-
If there had been even a single report that they decided not to pursue Machado because they had a better plan, I might be open to this argument. They wanted Machado, they felt strongly Machado was the best fit and best opportunity, and they whiffed badly. Perhaps that works out better in the long run, but that doesn't mean they made a good decision. They failed to make a bad one out of incompetence. So yeah, still upset.
-
I'm torn - I want the Rays to beat the Astros.... but I'd rather the Stros make it to the World Series than the damn Yanks, and I am not convinced the Rays could pull off back to back upsets
-
Shame that game was on the road - the roar on winning the series on that incredible catch would have been something else.

Hey. Hey, guys. Guess what. I think DET might be bad at baseball.
