Two weeks ago, we thought we had a nice rotation for next year with Rodon, Lopez, Giolito, and Kopech (and a 5th starter to be named later). Now Kopech is out for the year and Rodon and Giolito have looked like crap in their last 4-5 starts. Rodon has given up 20 runs in his last 26 1/3 innings for an ERA of 6.84. Giolito, who has been erratic all year, has given up 16 runs in his last 21 innings, for an ERA of 6.86---pretty much his ERA for most of the year. We're down to Lopez as our only dependable starter---18 runs in his last 60 2/3 innings for an ERA of 2.67. Should we be worried yet?

I hear ya. I meant the fans that are still left. One thing about us Sox fans (which I like) is that we treat the product on the field the same way any consumer treats any product: if it's no good, don't buy it. I don't believe in filling the stadium for a last place team (like the Cubs were famous for).

We need to start winning more games NEXT year to maintain fan interest. I don't want to see any more tanking nor do I want to overspend millions on free agents (primo free agents won't come here unless we're the highest bidder). I think we can accomplish this. Improvement should come in the everyday lineup (with Eloy added) and the 3 starting pitchers we currently have in the rotation (no Shields and no Kopech next year). There are several options for the other 2 starters yet to be determined Where we do need to spend on help is for 2 or 3 affordable bullpen pitchers. With a couple of exceptions, the current guys are obviously not cutting it. Too many blown leads late in the game. We're not going to compete for a division title next year, but we do need to improve to 70-75 wins and then a winning record in 2020 when more of the "future of the team" makes it to the big club.

The Sox are going to have to make some tough decisions as to who makes the 40-man roster. They're playing Cordell so much to prove the fact that he has no MLB future.

Wouldn't be a Shields start if he didn't give up at least a couple of dingers. No wonder nobody wanted him at the trade deadline.

One thing WOULD be different: the new owner would dump the incompetents that Reinsdorf is so damn loyal to (Williams, Steverson, etc.).

Moncada's BA has been in the .220's continuously since July 28. He may cluster together a few hits over a few games but then he reverts to his old self.

At 82 years of age, I don't think he will be around another 10 years, at least not as the "owner" of the White Sox. Back to the original idea, I like the thought of Epstein putting together a group to buy the Sox and putting himself in the Reinsdorf role, so far as decision-making goes. He certainly has a proven track record.

Engel goes 0-3 with 3 K's. And to top it off, all 3 AB's were with runners in scoring position. Is it a wonder he always gets pinch hit for late in the game? Even though he's got his BA over .235, is he the starting CF next year?

Absolutely right. I don't know how I missed him. I believe Norm hit .361 one year for Detroit.

We were reminiscing on another thread about some of the players on that infamous 1970 team that holds the record for most losses in a season (106). That got me thinking about some of the worst trades that the Sox made, trades that probably cost us a pennant or two. I'm talking about the trades that the sainted owner Bill Veeck allowed GM Frank Lane to make after the 1959 season. The intent was to make sure that the '59 pennant was not a fluke and to compete for additional league championships. To that end, they traded youngsters for over-the-hill veterans (some things never change). We traded the likes of future 30-game winner Denny McLain, solid catcher Earl Battey, young outfielder Johnny Callison and others for a bunch of has-beens. Had we not made those trades, our record would have been a lot better in the mid to late 1960's, years in which we lost the pennant by a handful of games in a couple of those years. I know that hindsight is 20/20 but I can't help wondering "what if".

Covey has failed miserably as a starter. Although he was excellent in his first 4-5 starts, he has been a disaster in almost every start since then. He has had success as a reliever, but you can't keep him in there for more than 1-2 innings. After that, he reverts back to Starter Mode.

So that's where K. Williams got the idea when he was the GM. (I wonder if the Alomar brothers are still alive and available?)

The Sox future is not riding on whether they get the 4th pick or, at worst, the 6th pick in next year's draft.

IF you're a diehard White Sox fan, you also hate the Chubs, by definition. It works the other way, also. A much more intense love-hate relationship: Bears and Packers.
