  1. Someone (Jack?) asked on the game thread if Giolito had a chance to get his ERA back under 3.00, like it was prior to the All-Star break. Short answer: extremely difficult. Projecting his innings pitched for the year at 187, he would have to give up no more than 12 ER in 56 1/3 innings (ERA of 1.92) to end up with an ERA of 2.98.
  2. Although he has zero power, he IS batting over .300. Better than the .180 hitting stiffs that Renteria had batting 4th for most of the year.
  3. Then 19 errors in 79 games played is considered good fielding?
  4. How about starting Buntaholics Anonymous. "Hi, my name is Ricky and I'm a buntaholic. I just can't help myself anymore. I constantly call for bunt, bunt, bunt. Under any and all circumstances. Please help me."
  5. ? A passed ball is the catcher's fault. I think you meant stopping a potential wild pitch.
  6. How's this: Detwiler and Covey combine to go the whole 9 innings and the bullpen is saved. I don't even care if the Sox take a beating as a result. Alternate option: Detwiler, Covey, and a position player.
  7. Another example of why pitchers should not be allowed to bat. Hopefully the NL adopts the DH sooner rather than later. I know, he could have gotten the same injury running to cover 1B on a grounder to Abreu (assuming he came up with it). But this particular injury would not have happened if the DH was in place (like it is in every other level of baseball).
  8. In 76 games played. That would project to 38 errors over 162 games.
  9. I think that the batting order is pretty good, actually. Anderson 2nd, Jimenez 4th, and McCann 5th, even though he is struggling big-time lately. He is still better than the guys batting 6-9. This might be the only lineup in the last 3 months that Renteria has put together without a .180 hitter in it(usually batting cleanup).
  10. I think those 2 statements are mutually exclusive. If we're woeful enough to garner a top 5 pick, I don't think we would be competitive for a playoff position in 2020. You're talking about probably going from 90 losses to 90 wins in one season. About 15 things would have to go perfectly right for that to happen. Knowing our history, what are the chances of that happening?
  11. I like the Nate Jones trade. He should have been gone long ago. So far as no other trades being made: I have no problem with that. Most people on here were saying the Sox should trade Colome, Bummer, Garcia, etc. ONLY IF they got an excellent return. Apparently, they weren't offered anything to Hahn's liking. I applaud him for not settling for crap like it appears many teams did in today's trades. Sometimes the best moves are the ones you DON'T make.
  12. First Alonso and now Rondon. We're starting to run out of .190 hitters. Oh wait, we still have Castillo and Reed. Whew.
  13. Absolutely right. He has 9 QS in his 22 starts, including the last 2 in which he gave up ONE EARNED RUN IN 15 INNINGS. Sure that won't last but who knows. He very easily could get his ERA down to the 4.50 range. The guy leads the starters in innings pitched, no small feat considering the overworked bullpen. I hope Hahn is not stupid enough to let this guy go for nothing more than a mid to low-level Class A "prospect".
  14. Quick trigger on the part of management, if you ask me. His ERA was only 15.68 in the 5 starts he had since his latest recall.
  15. Some guys just start off slow in their MLB career. Tom Glavine and John Smoltz are prime examples. These 2 HOFers hardly hit the ground running. Glavine had an ERA of 5.54 his 1st year and 4.56 in Year 2. Then it all kicked in. Smoltz had a 5.48 ERA his first year with the Braves. Certainly not saying that Cease is a future Hall of Fame guy, but it IS way too early to complain.
  16. Nobody is coming after the guy. The thread is titled "Is Giolito an ace?" Everyone agrees he's come a million miles from who he was last year, but that has nothing to do with this thread. Is he an ace as of right now? He's still the best starter that the Sox have, so in that respect , yes. On a team like Washington, he might be a #4. We all want him to succeed. Some of us are just concerned about his performance in his last several starts.
  17. What's disconcerting to me about Giolito is his most recent history. We aren't talking about an isolated bad game or 2. He has a 6.38 ERA over his last 7 starts. Is he the Giolito of the 1st half or the beginning of the 2nd half? He stated in a story today by Merkin in MLB.com that he got away with a lot of bad pitches that he threw in the 1st half of the year. Batters are killing those mistakes now. Hopefully he reverts back to Good Giolito. I'd say he's a #3 right now---the average of an ace, as he was in the first half, and a #5 like he's been so far.
  18. He said in an interview after his last start before the All Star game that we will be seeing a different Reylo. He said he knows what he needs to work on. So far so good---2 good games so far after the break and the 3rd one off to a good start also.
  19. Another request. What's with the quick trigger to remove the game threads? Gone by early AM after a night game? I know it's a GAME thread, but there are frequently pages of comments by people long after the game is over. Especially by those of us who didn't see the game.
  20. Couple of fun facts: although they are 25 games under .500, Miami did manage a 6 game winning streak earlier in the season, and they also swept Philadelphia in a 3-game series at Philly. On the plus side (for the Sox): they have been shut out an MLB high 15 times so far.
