Weird tactic. With Record breaking deals possible and teams that lose out looking for a fall back....why do this and risk injury? He gets 4/80 at the VERY minimum on Market. I cannot believe his agent and WIFE would support losing so much. That is family altering money if his arm falls off.
-
What teams will be willing to give that high of contract to him? Rangers, Phillies, Angels? Mystery team? Nationals offer is 7/210, right? so 30 m AAV. Sox max offer in the 7/245 range, that is 35m AAV. Is that enough to sway him? Maybe. 6/220 is 35m AAV also...but would he really take that to leave a team he just won a series with? 5/200 just isn't happening with this ownership.

I don't think Strasburg is unobtainable...it will just be very difficult. And I would argue that Rendon and Grandal are Perfect gets for year/value in the window of competing that is forming. Machado/Harper were nice fits but would have been wasted 30 million assets last year and quite honestly...performed just OKAY. I very much prefer Rendon to Machado if he can be had for a 6-7 year and less than 32 million AAV contract.

Talk about amazing timing. One of two teams that would be an annual threat to the Sox rise in the AL (yankees other obviously) is going to potentially get penalized and will be under the radar in a MAJOR way the next season or two. I would imagine the team BA goes down at least 10% next season and Free Agents are definitely going to think twice about going there if they care about the optics. While I doubt MLB comes down too hard, this can only help out the Sox over the next 3-4 competitive seasons. Also...Screw the Astros - glad they lost this season and I have lost massive respect for their success.

Why are my pants so tight after reading Twitter...?

I love that this is a thing. Some laughed at me when I suggested this as a really aggressive off-season idea. I know it won't happen, but seeing it thrown out there is fantastic. Rendon is simply the best FA not named Cole...and arguably the most realistic to steal

Rangers might trade lefthanded hitter/outfielder
EloyJenkins replied to Whisox05's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If Eloy can get better in the field (it's a stretch, i know)...then Robert can shade to RF a bit and mitigate a mediocre defender. Then Castellanos is viable. But they really seem to be pushing for a LH guy no matter what the skillset is. -
If the White Sox "Dabble" in free agency...I am going to start "Dabbling" around for a new team.

Ummm...amazing starting pitching, a great catching FA and potentially getting some Red Sox bargain bin deal is definitely worth blowing it all on. Honestly not spending it on Harchado and seeing Moncada, anderson and Eloy succeed sent this rebuild into BUY NOW mode. We want a 4-5 year window. That accelerates amazingly if they go 160m payroll
-
I would be totally good on this lineup of not having ABREU. That would be much more realistic. Just not sure if he is gonna find a multi year deal with the pick attached. Also...someone stated why not Cole...and that reason is that Jerry would never agree to 8 years on a pitcher....and I'm hoping Rendon would come less then Machado did because age. I want Cole/Strasburg over anything...but the Boston thread got me thinking on a really different path. I hope the payroll falls in the 150-160 range...alas...it's a dream.
-
That is fair. I like him. But Moncada, Rendon and Benintendi to me is just too alluring. It's a pipe dream...I know. But I wanted to throw together something that I haven't seen posted. People will laugh and that is fine...but this team would absolutely rake and give JR a heart attack.
-
What the hell is that supposed to mean? I made an aggressive plan...will Hahn do it...I know he wont, but why not put together an absolutely killer team and see what it would look like?
-
Shoot, I forgot to clarify a few things: I overshot Wheeler a bit to ensure they get him. Let's adjust to 5/110 Trade for Price would include cash to knock down his yearly contract. 36 million sounds realistic (and we may even need to add lopez or dunning +...so he would be $20 mil a year Price 20 mil Rendon 34 mil Wheeler 22 mil Grandal 20 mil Abreu 18 mil (1 season only) Benintendi 4.9 mil New Salary - 119 mil this season 101 mil 2021 40 mil of assumed salary for roster Losing Sanchez 6.9 mil Goins 900 K so about 160 mil for 2020 and 140 mil for 2021 (obviously will be adjusted with losses and additions)
-
This is my plan. I am thinking BIG Trade Madrigal and parts to Boston for Benitendi/Price Shift Moncada to 2nd Sign Anthony Rendon for 3rd base 7/240 ish deal Sign Wheeler to 5/120 deal Sign Grandal to 3/60 deal with a 4th year option Sign Abreu 1/18 qualifying Lineup- Cf Robert 2b Moncada 3B Rendon LF Eloy 1B ABREU (2021 tbr by Vaughn) C Grandal/Mcann/ Collins occasionally DH Collins/Grandal/ Eloy occasionally RF Benitendi SS Anderson Starters Gio, Wheeler, Price, Cease, Kopech/Lopez Rodon or Lopez is traded at deadline for Reliever and Utility bat Sanchez, goins are gone and Leury is Utility to start season No major bullpen upgrades, but sign highest upside lefty you can afford. This team competes immediately and outside of probably losing Moncada has a 3-4 year BIG run.
-
correct. Just not a MOR starter as was mentioned. that ship has sailed on him.
-
I go to some Braves games (live down the street from the stadium)...we want nothing to do with Teheran. He is Javy all over again...Had the stuff...never the head space...and now the stuff is fading fast. IF he is a cheap reclamation project as our #2 FA pitcher and a bridge until Rodon is back...that is fine. But no long term deals should be handed to this guy.
-
Taking him off third knocks his value down big time. He will find plenty of options at third
-
As mentioned...Alvarez wins this even if Eloy hit 295. The buzz for him was palpable. All good...Eloy has the better career.
-
Smart move. Avoiding a long term albastross, they can fast track Vaughn if he performs...Collins can get a fair shake of at bats this season...and if some crazy team signs him...they replace the pick Sox lose for signing one of Cole, Strasburg or Wheeler...
-
Glad you are not a GM....holy crap those are awful contracts. Strasburg will be 32 next season, if he gets over 170 million on any contract it just isn't worth the cost. 8 year pitching contract is ludicrous
-
Realistically he gets 5/150 or 6/170...are Sox Willing to pay that?
-
Quintana option picked up. Another year of misery for Q on the Cubs
-
Boras Boner is so big right now he broke his laptop table working on the next binder.
-
I for one am happy about this result. Cole most definitely is a FA...and since Strasburg won dominantly...he will opt out. That makes a Wheeler acquisition more likely and that is a good thing for the Sox.
-
I will never understand why Cole didn't get the 7th and 8th innings in this game...
