Trevor Bauer traded to Reds - Puig to Indians
Look at Ray Ray Run replied to Whisox05's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I dont think they can sell to fans that they're trying to improve by trading their best starter for Yasiel Puig. Franmil Reyes is better than Yasiel Puig so I think he'd be a better sell. -

Everyone who makes the playoffs has a chance. -
Don't look now, but collins has made a small swing change shortening his hand hitch at the start and he's swung a bit earlier in the count since his demotion. No clue with either will stick or actually matter but he's had a nice week.

Why WAR is stupid for Closers, especially for Colome

Its 48 wins not 43. -
But you said it's not written into the rules and it actually is. If your argument for keeping him down is to exploit service time then you're argument is against the CBA and the rules of the game.

No, because a replacement level team would win games as well - I believe a replacement level team is calculated to win about 50 games; somewhere around there. Edit: its 48 wins, not 50 -
It was not agreed upon. It is against the rules to exploit service time it's just nearly impossible to prove unless someone flat out says it.

That's not what subjective is for a stat though. The data sets they are using, and chose to use, are not influenced by opinions. The choice of which stats to value (FIP vs ERA for example) in their equations is based on what their end goal maybe, but the actual outputs (the stat itself) is not subjective as it is not influenced by opinions - it is only influenced by the actual production. I think were disagreeing on semantics. Modelers may be subjective in what stat they value the most, but the actual statistical outputs themselves receive zero influence or opinion built in so their outputs are not subjective. WAR isnt popped out and then adjusted based on opinions. It is normalized for every single person playing the game, therefore since the standards of equation remain the same for everyone, it is not subjective. -

The difference in fWAR and bWAR is the defensive metrics they use for batters. For pitchers, fangraphs uses an expected outcome (FIP) instead of an actual outcome (ERA). Those metrics can have different readings on a player without being subjective. They simply derive their values from different data sets but those data sets are built on outcomes and not opinions. -

WAR is derived from factual outcomes and is absent of "opinions." That's why WAR is not subjective. No ones opinion or feelings impact a players WAR. That is why WAR is not subjective. The defensive metrics built into WAR are based on expected outcomes of batted balls based on prior outcomes of similarly batted balls, not a score keepers judgement on whether it should be made or not. In regards to hits vs errors offensively, we'll just agree to disagree. It has no true impact on WAR as the sample size your addressing over the career of a player is near zero. -

Yeah, I also think many people on the analytical side don't explain things with patience. Frequently, and I find myself doing this as well, we talk to those who want to learn or understand like they were children. No one listens while being ridiculed or demeaned. Some don't genuinely want to learn but others do. Messaging is key to education of analytics. It's even more difficult on the internet as speaking in an analytic language can appear condescending even if that's not the goal. Defining thing in layman's terms is a talent and it's what makes a great teacher. I struggle to do this frequently but I really do try to explain things respectfully and in an adult manner. -

Stiever didn't exactly dominate A ball either - he has dominated A+ though. -

Yeah, he's probably earned a 120 or so wRC+. Could be better sure but struggling is the wrong word. -
I actually heard this as I was driving at the time and all I could think was that Bob Nightengale is a moron who makes up nonsense. In that same conversation Bob stated that Syndergaard isnt a top of the rotation talent because he doesnt know how to pitch... he then followed that up talking about how Jon Lester is an ace. Nightengale is a moron.

The step up in competition from mid-west high school baseball and rookie ball to A league baseball is huge for a kid. I'll worry about Bush if he doesn't hit next. This year was about challenging the kid, getting him at bats against good competition and growing him from there. -

There is nothing about WAR that is subjective. Its difficult to give a slash line because amazingly enough you get value and lose it for more than just offense because baseball isn't just offense. Leury Garcia plays a premium defensive position and has graded out above average there. He also is a + base runner. Abreu is a bad defender and base runner who is only about 10% better than Leury with the bat this year despite playing a position that asks for premium offensive production. That's why leury is a more valuable player. It's not that complicated. A replacement level SS (assuming league average defense and baserunning) slash line would look something like Brandon Crawford this year: 234/304/376 -
The fragility of some fans on this board recently...

I mean, for a 20ish year period they had like the 5th most wins in baseball. They had some bad luck a couple times - winning a lot of games and missing out. Their owner cost them one chance at a WS by leading a strike. They were certainly competitive and pretty good. Every august and september It felt like the games mattered - even if they'd choke or etc. That's all you can ask as a fan really. They were competitive for 2 decades. -

Cool story but you tried to say Quintana and Marco were the same when Quintana had a top 10 WAR over a 4 year period and Marco is no where near that level of production . -

It might have something to do with the fact that Quintana had a 4 year stretch without a WAR under 4 while Marco has never had a 4+ WAR season in his career but besides that they're like totally the same. -
10 minute interview. Points to the one negative/mistake part of it. Reminds me of my wife.

Great and he was hitting 230 about 3 weeks ago and has been up and down. He looks like he might be a decent little utility infielder which is already what yolmer is. Giving him a shot at what? If hes a utility infielder they can use him next year in that roll after he finishes his level. Here's what I promise. No matter how incompetent the Chicago white sox are, they know more about danny mendick and his development than you. Mendick isn't being exploited for financial reasons like Robert. Calling an organization incompetent for not calling up a 25 utility prospect with a 105 wRC+ at AAA is a bit of a reach.
-
Because they want Mendick to continue development and get everyday at bats at AAA? What's incompetent is accelerating anyone's planned path because of injuries to a bad big league team. The big league team outcome shouldn't dictate how any prospects development plan goes.
-
I get it to a point, but Covey has been light and day better than them at AAA. I think you're just asking to replace garbage with trash. I'm not against it, but when you throw Arnie Munoz's out there you get Arnie Munoz results.
